Lane Buffer for Boxturtle

An inline filament buffer for toolchangers integrated into the rear skirts of the Boxturtle.

Hardware BOM (Per Lane)

  • ECAS04 Bowden Coupler x2
  • M3 Heat Insert x2
  • M3x20 BHCS x2
  • M3x50 SHCS (Half Thread) x1
  • M2x10 Self Tapping screws x4
  • M3 Washer x1
  • D2F-5L Switch x2
  • Pen Spring (~29mm long, I sourced mine from a BIC 4 pen)
  • 4mmx2mm Bowden Tube (114mm long)
  • Wire and JST Connectors for 2 switches

Printed BOM

  • Switch Mount (x1 per lane)
  • Hex Insert (x1 per lane)
  • Clip (x1 per lane)
  • Slide (x1 per lane)
  • Alignment Jig
  • Rear Skirt End
  • Rear Skirt Center
  • Rear Skirt Power

Instructions (Per Lane)

  • Remove the rubber piece from the ECAS04 couplers and discard them. They are not required for this build.

  • Install the 2 M3 heat inserts into the Switch Mount.

  • Install the ECAS04 into the Slide.

  • Install the ECAS04 into the Hex Insert.

  • Attach the 2 D2F-5L switches to the Switch Mount with the lever in the orientation marked on the print.

  • Place a M3 washer and pen spring over the M3x50 SHCS (Half Thread) and screw it in to the Switch Mount. There should be ~25mm of the bolt's shaft exposed.

  • Place the Hex Insert through the hole in the skirt piece. It needs to be angled in to make the ECAS section clear.

  • Place the Slide through the hole in the Hex Insert and attach the Alignment Jig. It needs to be angled in.

  • Place the Switch Mount Assembly over the Slide and Hex Insert ensuring the washer and spring sit inside the relief in the Slide and the switch's levers do not get caught on the Slide's dimples.

  • Attach the clamp to the bottom of the assembly using 2 M3x20 BHCS screws.

  • Cut a Piece of 4mmx2mm bowden tube 114mm long and chamfer the inside of one end. Make the the bowden piece as straight as possible.

  • Insert the 4x2mm bowden tube pushing it in as far as it wil go. This will compress the spring and hold the slide in the "extended" position. Remove the Alignment Jig while the spring is compressed.

  • After installing the skirt/buffer assemblies in to the BoxTurtle, depress the ECAS coupler on the Hex Insert and Pull the bowden tube out and seat it in to the ECAS coupler on the lane's extruder.

Wiring

  • Good luck.
