PP-02 Bus-Bone

A 14-header Eurorack passive/filtered bus-board.

WHY DID YOU MAKE THIS?

  • Power bussing in Eurorack systems is often done cheaply with "flying bus cables" (16-way 2.54mm IDC ribbon cables).
  • Easy to build, great for practicing/learning circuit design.
  • From zbotic.in - "IDC cables have poor derating - a single 28 AWG conductor in a ribbon cable can carry about 0.5-1A safely (derated from the free-air rating due to bundling effect). For 1-2A power runs, 2 conductors in parallel is recommended. For 5A+, ribbon cables are not recommended — use dedicated power cables. Voltage drop can also be a concern: V_drop = I * R * length where 28 AWG has approximately 0.213 ohm/meter resistance" (https://zbotic.in/ribbon-cable-and-idc-connector-flat-cable-wiring-guide/?srsltid=AU7gw4X0w41HsxQFm353VnfqOj2KTwfvW44vglfu8D-DLCJrFGHj-gJq).
  • "Bus-boards" can't entirely negate this, however they significantly reduce the amount of IDC cable being used and as a result provide a reliable, strong, low-impedance, filtered path for +12, -12, +5, GATE, CV and GND.

WHY SHOULD I MAKE THIS?

  • Aaffordable and reliable entry into the incredible world of modular.
  • Flying-bus cables are mechanically and electrically sketchy.
  • The supplier parts-sheet is fully filled out - you don't have to spec anything - one-click order through JLCPCB.
  • An intermediate-level, friendly layout for those wanting to get into SMD soldering.
  • Lovely poochy paw prints + technical details are printed on the board.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

  • DIMENSIONS: 40mm (H) x 300mm (W) x 15mm (D).
  • +12V, -12V, +5V, GND, GATE, CV rails.
  • High quality PCBs with wide, low-impedance copper traces to accommodate high power loads.
  • 1/4" "quick-release" spade connectors on both ends of the board for secondary option of power in/out connector.
  • Power-noise filtering caps (47uF bulk electrolytics in series at start per rail and 100nF in parallel per power-rail per header).
  • 14 generously-spaced, keyed 16-pin box-headers (no backwards powering modules).
  • Blue/Yellow/Green indicator LEDs for each power rail - good for troubleshooting shorts.
  • Open-source design - https://github.com/LeftHandPooch/Bus-Bone-Eurorack-Bus-Board
  • Eight 3.4mm mounting holes available to mechanically secure the board to your case (3M screws/bolts and nylon washers/spacers recommended).
  • Handmade in Meanjin, Australia by Brisbane’s hirsute hound, Lefthandpooch.
  • Built stock readily available online or in-person in Brisbane @ HYLIN Devices - https://hylindevices.com.au/products/pp-02-bus-bone 17/09/26.

Changelog

Bus Bone v0.1

  • the original!
  • drawn using EasyEda and subsequently broke the association between schematic and PCB. Darn.

Bus Bone v0.2

  • moved components around very slightly to possibly prevent shorting of +5V rail near first header.

Bus Bone v0.3 (upcoming)

  • speccing nylon spacers and screws for built-in mechanical + electrical isolation.
