1. What it is and who it is for

News Slider shows a carousel of news or announcements (image, title, description, optional link) on the Self-Service / Helpdesk home page.

It is aimed at GLPI administrators and support teams who need to communicate with end users (maintenance windows, knowledge base, support contacts) without custom portal markup.

2. Features

• Slide CRUD: title, description, image, optional link, sort order, active flag
• Optional visibility window: date_start / date_end
• Entity-aware slides: entities_id + recursive
• Slider settings (see Configuration): enabled, autoplay, interval, arrows, dots, pause on hover, height, object-fit, upload limit, width resize, replace vs keep the default Helpdesk search banner
• Uploads only under public/uploads/ (GLPI 11 public assets)
• i18n: full ru_RU, plus en_GB / en_US
• Field help texts on every Config and slide-form field in the UI
• Demo slides with Unsplash photos seeded on install when no imaged slides exist

3. Requirements

4. Installation

From a ZIP archive

1. Extract the archive so you get glpi/plugins/newsslider/ (with setup.php, hook.php, public/, …).
2. The folder name must be exactly newsslider (not newsslider-3.0.0 or glpi-plugin-newsslider).
3. In the UI: Setup → Plugins → install and enable News Slider.
4. Or via CLI (from the GLPI root):

php bin/console plugin:install newsslider -u glpi
php bin/console plugin:activate newsslider
php bin/console cache:clear

When updating an already installed version:

php bin/console plugin:update newsslider
php bin/console cache:clear

5. Ensure plugins/newsslider/public/uploads is writable by the web server user (www-data / apache / equivalent).
6. Grant the News Slider right on the relevant profiles (Administration → Profiles).
7. Create or edit slides under Setup → News Slider if needed.
8. Open Self-Service / Helpdesk — the carousel should appear with images.

5. Configuration

Path: Setup → Plugins → News Slider → Configure (or the plugin config page).

Every field in the UI has a short help text. Option meanings:

Field	Description
Enabled	Master switch. When off, the slider is hidden on Self-Service.
Autoplay	Automatically rotate slides. Disabled when the user prefers reduced motion.
Autoplay interval (ms)	Delay between slides. Minimum 1000. Recommended: 5000–8000.
Show arrows	Previous / Next buttons on the sides of the carousel.
Show dots	Dot indicators under the carousel to jump to a slide.
Pause on hover	Stop autoplay while the mouse pointer is over the slider.
Replace helpdesk search banner	Yes — replace the default banner; No — show the slider above it.
Slider height (px)	Visible height of the carousel area (180–900). Match your banners.
Image object-fit	cover — fill the area (may crop); contain — fit the full image.
Max upload size (MB)	Plugin limit (1–20). The lower of this value and PHP upload_max_filesize wins.
Max image width (px)	If > 0, wider uploads are resized with GD (aspect ratio kept). 0 — no resize.

Slides are managed separately: title, description, image file, link, active flag, sort order, visibility dates, entity and recursive.

6. Recommended image sizes

Resolution	1600×500 or 1920×600
Formats (MIME)	image/jpeg, image/png, image/webp, image/gif
File size	≤ 2 MB by default (configurable)

Oversized widths can be auto-resized when Max image width is set in plugin settings.

7. Demo content and photo licenses

On install or update, if the database has no slides with images yet, the plugin seeds four neutral demo slides (ticket portal, remote support, knowledge base, service status).

Photos live in resources/demo/ and are copied to public/uploads/ during seed. License: Unsplash License — see resources/demo/SOURCES.txt.

You can delete or replace the demo slides at any time.

8. Rights and Self-Service

• The News Slider plugin right is configured on the profile tab (Administration → Profiles).
  • Read — view the slide list.
  • Write — create/edit slides and access settings.
• Self-Service users see the carousel when the plugin is enabled, there are active slides in the visibility window, and the user’s entity matches the slide criteria.
• The central (backend) interface does not show the carousel — Helpdesk only.

9. Troubleshooting

Images return HTTP 404

• Files must live under plugins/newsslider/public/uploads/, with URLs like /plugins/newsslider/uploads/... (GLPI 11 serves public assets from public/).
• After copying files, run php bin/console cache:clear.
• Check directory permissions on uploads.

Upload rejected around 2 MB or more

• Check Max upload size in plugin settings.
• Compare with PHP upload_max_filesize and post_max_size — the lower limit wins.
• Allowed MIME types: JPEG, PNG, WEBP, GIF.

Slider not visible on Helpdesk

• Plugin is installed and enabled.
• Config option Enabled is Yes.
• There are active slides with matching dates and entity.
• You are in the Self-Service / Helpdesk interface, not Central.
• CSS/JS should return HTTP 200: /plugins/newsslider/css/newsslider.css, /plugins/newsslider/js/newsslider.js.

Broken styles or CSS 404

• Assets must be under public/css/ and public/js/.
• Clear the GLPI cache.
• Do not move assets outside public/.

Empty images after upgrading from 2.x

Version 3.0.0 rewrites URLs from /plugins/newsslider/files/ to /plugins/newsslider/uploads/ and moves files into public/uploads/. If files were already removed from disk, re-upload the images.
