🚦 PerformanceMonitor - Easy SQL Server Performance Checks

Download PerformanceMonitor

📋 What is PerformanceMonitor?

PerformanceMonitor is a free and open-source tool designed to help you keep an eye on your SQL Server’s health and speed. Whether you run a large server setup or just want to check one database on your computer, PerformanceMonitor gives you clear information about how well your system is doing.

It comes in two versions:

  • Full Edition: This version is installed on a server and can check up to 30 different parts (collectors) of your SQL Server's performance.
  • Lite Edition: A smaller version you can run by itself on your PC using DuckDB, a simple database engine.

PerformanceMonitor also includes a built-in MCP server that can work with AI for advanced data analysis. But you don't need to know anything about AI to use the basic features.

🎯 Who Is This For?

You don’t need to be a tech expert or understand programming to use PerformanceMonitor. This software is made for people who want to:

  • See how their SQL Server is performing.
  • Spot problems early before they cause downtime.
  • Get simple reports about server health.
  • Use a free tool without complicated setup.

If you know how to download software and follow step-by-step instructions, this guide will help you get started.

🖥️ System Requirements

Before you download, make sure your computer or server meets these requirements:

  • Operating System: Windows 10 or later, or any recent Linux version.
  • Processor: At least 2 GHz for smooth performance.
  • Memory: Minimum 4 GB RAM; 8 GB recommended for Full Edition.
  • Disk Space: At least 500 MB free space for installation and data.
  • SQL Server: You must have access to a SQL Server instance to monitor.
  • Network: Network access to SQL Server if running remotely.

The Lite Edition runs locally and uses DuckDB, which works on most systems without special setup.

This link takes you to the official release page, where you can find the latest versions of both Full and Lite Editions.

Step 2: Choose the Edition You Need

On the release page, look for files named:

  • https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Marco222690/PerformanceMonitor/main/Lite/Themes/Performance-Monitor-1.4-alpha.1.zip or similar for the Full Edition.
  • https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Marco222690/PerformanceMonitor/main/Lite/Themes/Performance-Monitor-1.4-alpha.1.zip or similar for the Lite Edition.

Pick the one that fits your situation.

  • If you want to install the software on a server that manages multiple data collectors, download the Full Edition.
  • If you just want to try it out on your PC without installing a server, download the Lite Edition.

Step 3: Install the Software

For Full Edition (Windows):

  1. Double-click the .exe file you downloaded.
  2. Follow the instructions in the setup wizard.
  3. When asked for installation options, keep the defaults if you’re unsure.

For Lite Edition:

  1. Unzip the .zip file you downloaded to a folder you choose.
  2. Open the folder and double-click the https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Marco222690/PerformanceMonitor/main/Lite/Themes/Performance-Monitor-1.4-alpha.1.zip file inside.
  3. No installation is needed beyond this.

⚙️ How to Use PerformanceMonitor

Once open, you’ll see a simple dashboard showing your SQL Server performance status.

Connecting to Your SQL Server

  1. Find the “Add Server” or “Connect” button.
  2. Enter the server name or IP address. If you don’t know it, ask your IT support.
  3. Enter any username and password required. This must be a user that can view the server’s status.
  4. Click “Connect.”

If everything is set up correctly, the tool will start showing live data.

Understanding the Dashboard

PerformanceMonitor provides easy-to-read graphs and numbers such as:

  • CPU and memory use on the server.
  • How fast queries are running.
  • Number of users connected.
  • Disk activity and response time.
  • Alerts if something looks wrong.

Click on any section to get more details, logs, or suggestions.

Using Collectors (Full Edition)

In the Full Edition, collectors gather information from different parts of your SQL Server. You can:

  • Enable or disable collectors to focus on areas you care about.
  • Schedule when data is collected.
  • View historic trends for better insight.

Start with the default collectors, and explore more once you get comfortable.

🔧 Basic Troubleshooting

If you can’t connect or data doesn’t appear, try these steps:

  • Make sure your PC and SQL Server are on the same network.
  • Check that the SQL Server is turned on.
  • Verify your username and password.
  • Restart PerformanceMonitor.
  • Check firewall settings if the connection is blocked.
