The API v2 and diagnostics contract fixtures are now pinned to server commit 84ed9e596. The sync script only vendors from an explicit ref, so anyone re-running it at that ref gets the same bytes.

Problem

scripts/sync-apiv2-fixtures.sh vendored whatever the server checkout had at HEAD. The recorded pin, ba18bf120, was not on server main. Of the 18 fixtures in Tests/Fixtures/APIv2 that were written by hand, the server now publishes 17, and 7 of those differ from our copies:

  • download_capability gains the allowed, bounded_*, file_delivery and subscription_* fields.
  • download_manifest gains marker_segments.
  • The playback fixtures carry real revisions and request instances.
  • playback_start_opaque_ids uses /api/v2/stream/... media URLs.

Tests/Fixtures/DiagnosticsContract had no record of its source commit, and its manifest.schema.json was behind the server.

Solution

  • scripts/sync-apiv2-fixtures.sh <server-ref> now requires a ref and the SILO_SERVER_REPO environment variable, which points at a silo-server checkout. It resolves the ref to a commit there and reads every file with git show <commit>:<path>. It never reads the server working tree or HEAD, so the old dirty-tree check is gone.
  • The script keeps two explicit lists: SELECTED (vendored from the server) and AUTHORED (written by hand). It stops with an error, before changing any file, if an AUTHORED fixture is missing, is also in SELECTED, or is now published by the server; that fixture then has to move to SELECTED. It deletes any other *.json in Tests/Fixtures/APIv2, such as a fixture dropped from SELECTED after the server removed it, so a stale server copy is never relabeled as client-authored.
  • SOURCE builds its client-authored list from AUTHORED.
  • I re-vendored at 84ed9e596. The 17 published fixtures replace the hand-written copies. index.json now lists 31 entries. playback_stop_draining stays client-authored because the server does not publish it.
  • Tests/Fixtures/APIv2/SOURCE records the ref, the full commit and its date. It lists vendored and client-authored files separately.
  • The script also mirrors docs/design/schemas/client-diagnostics/v1 into Tests/Fixtures/DiagnosticsContract. It writes a SOURCE there and pulls in the server's newer manifest.schema.json, which adds descriptions, prefixItems and the crash/manual allOf rules. The other 16 files were already byte-identical. project.yml keeps the new SOURCE out of both test bundles.
  • APIv2ContractTests now expects the 31-entry index. The new wizard_completed in get_setup_status_ok and the new identity link and digest in get_system_info_ok decode without model changes, because the app reads neither field.
  • Tests/Fixtures/SettingsContract is unchanged. W4-K owns it.

Validation

  • Script behavior:
    • New scripts/sync-apiv2-fixtures.test.sh runs the script against a throwaway server repository with more than 3,000 fixtures, far past a pipe buffer. It checks the SILO_SERVER_REPO requirement, the missing-AUTHORED and shadowing errors, a SELECTED fixture the server removed, stale-file deletion, the SOURCE client-authored list and the filtered index.json. Every refusal must leave the fixture directory unchanged. It passes locally on bash 3.2, and the CI scripts workflow now runs it. The same test fails when the name lookup uses the earlier printf | grep -q pipe.
    • With no argument it exits 2 and prints the usage line. With an unknown ref it exits 1.
    • Running it at 84ed9e596 and again at the full SHA gives the same fixture bytes. Only the ref line in each SOURCE differs.
  • Every re-vendored file matches git show 84ed9e596:<path> byte for byte.
  • iOS, tvOS and macOS builds: all PASS.
  • iOS tests on these SiloTests classes: PASS, 153 tests, 0 failures.
    • APIv2ContractTests, APIv2ProbeTests, APIv2SubtitleTests
    • DiagnosticsContractTests, DiagnosticsAttributeRegistryParityTests, HostedDiagnosticsAPITests
    • CatalogV2Tests, APIv2ContractStateTests
  • tvOS tests on the same classes in SiloTVTests: PASS, 153 tests, 0 failures.
  • After the final script changes, all three builds passed again, and APIv2ContractTests plus DiagnosticsContractTests passed on iOS and tvOS (20 tests each, 0 failures).
  • Final stack: with all 50 PRs applied, the full iOS suite (1981 tests) and tvOS suite (1792 tests) passed with 0 failures, the macOS build passed, and the v1 path guard passed. Every branch in the stack, this one included, builds on its own.

CI fix carried in this PR

The iOS job of the Apple regression workflow has failed on main since #342, so every PR based on main inherits the failure. On Xcode 26.3 the compiler gives up on ContentView.body with "unable to type-check this expression in reasonable time". #342 added the iOS remote-playback wiring and two confirmation dialogs to a modifier chain that was already long. The first commit in this PR splits body into four stages chained in the original order, and moves the remote-playback wiring and both dialogs into a private ViewModifier. The code moved verbatim and the modifier order is unchanged, so behavior is the same. It rides at the bottom of the stack so every PR can go green. It also cherry-picks cleanly onto main by itself.

  • Xcode 27 type-check time for the body getter: 1,317 ms before, at most 241 ms for the largest stage after.
  • A regression run on Xcode 26.3 with only this commit on top of main compiled the iOS app and passed the full iOS suite (1591 tests, 0 failures).
  • With only this commit on main: iOS, tvOS and macOS builds pass, and the full iOS (1591 tests) and tvOS (1449 tests) suites pass with 0 failures.

Risks and follow-ups

  • No test reads most of the newly published download and playback fixtures yet. Later PRs in the stack (W2-, W3-) will consume them.
  • The script now deletes any *.json in Tests/Fixtures/APIv2 that is in neither list. A new hand-written fixture must be added to AUTHORED before the next sync, or the sync deletes it (git still has it).
  • The diagnostics test runner does not interpret manifest.schema.json, so the schema's new allOf and prefixItems rules are vendored but not enforced by Apple tests.

The API v2 stack

This PR is the base of a 50-PR stack that moves the Apple clients from /api/v1 to /api/v2. After the stack, the only v1 request the apps make is the unauthenticated GET /api/v1/health probe, which the server keeps through 1.0. A CI guard (PR 03, made exact in PR 50) and a DEBUG assertion in the request builder (PR 50) keep it that way.

Owner decisions the stack implements: downloads saved by earlier versions are removed once on upgrade, with a one-time notice (PR 22); settings writes retry only the latest value per key, with a bounded backoff, then hold that key with a discard option (PR 18); and a v1-only server gets the existing "server needs to be updated" message on server add, restore and error screens instead of "could not reach" (PR 07).

Merge in order, from this PR up. Each PR targets the one below it.

Follow-ups found during validation, none introduced by the stack: a server replan fails when quality changes while an external subtitle is selected; a common-word search can time out on the server; cancelled requests are logged by the server as 500 or 401; personal collection editing has no iOS entry point; the library grid can look blank after returning from Search. With downloads present, the progress re-read pages through the whole history because v2 has no delta read.

Part 1 of 50 in the Apple API v2 stack. Base: main. Merge in order from the bottom of the stack. The plan and full index are in PR 01.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The sync script now reads fixtures from a pinned server commit, updates API v2 and diagnostics contract fixtures, validates authored and selected fixture sets, and records source provenance. The PR adds fixture coverage and schema constraints, plus shell and CI checks for the sync process.

Changes

Fixture synchronization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve and synchronize a server commit
scripts/sync-apiv2-fixtures.sh
The script resolves a server ref to a commit, reads files from that commit, validates selected and authored fixtures, removes stale API v2 fixture files, and mirrors diagnostics contract files.
Update API v2 contract fixtures
iosApp/Tests/Fixtures/APIv2/*, iosApp/Tests/APIv2ContractTests.swift
The fixture index adds download, playback, subtitle, and user-library cases. Fixture bodies and source metadata are updated, and the contract test expects 31 indexed fixtures.
Update diagnostics contract schema and provenance
iosApp/Tests/Fixtures/DiagnosticsContract/*, iosApp/project.yml
The manifest schema adds archive ordering and report-type constraints, and describes character-count and byte-length limits. Source metadata and iOS and tvOS project entries are updated.
Test synchronization and run it in CI
scripts/sync-apiv2-fixtures.test.sh, .github/workflows/ci-scripts.yml
The shell test checks successful synchronization and rejection cases. CI runs it when the sync script changes.

The fixture sync and refreshed contract fixtures look ready. The new sync test has gaps: it would not catch a regression that reads the latest server commit instead of the pinned one, or one that rewrites files before rejecting. It also should clear inherited Git variables. These are test-quality follow-ups and do not affect app behavior.

Code review summary

Reviewed head: 590c404b (apiv2-stack/01-pin-contract-fixtures).

Process: an adversarial review of this PR's diff with each candidate finding independently verified before any fix, a simplify pass for medium and larger PRs, and a whole-stack review across contract conformance, authority and failure handling, data integrity, user-visible behavior and cross-PR integration.

Verified findings, all fixed on this branch:

  • minor: is_published gives false negatives under pipefail once the server fixture listing outgrows the pipe buffer
  • minor: A fixture dropped from SELECTED stays on disk and SOURCE relabels it as client-authored
  • minor: Checked-in script defaults to one developer's absolute server path

Validation: this branch builds on its own for iOS, tvOS and macOS, and its focused tests passed. The completed stack passed the full iOS suite (1981 tests) and tvOS suite (1792 tests) with 0 failures, the macOS build and the v1 path guard. The final stack was also exercised on iOS and tvOS simulators against a v1/v2 bridge server: sign-in (password and QR), restore, browse, search, detail, favorites and watchlist, playback (direct play, transcode, subtitles, stop), audiobooks, downloads with offline playback, settings, requests, profiles, push registration and diagnostics. Server logs showed no /api/v1 request from the new builds except the retained health probe.

Remaining: no open verified findings. Merge in stack order.

Mergeability: 8/10 — conditional. The approach holds up and every verified finding is fixed. Conditions: this PR's CI must pass (it was pending at review time), and the owner still plans a physical-device check of the completed stack.

Test that the requested commit wins over HEAD and the working tree.

At this assertion, base, HEAD, and the server files all have the same contents. A sync implementation that ignores $base and reads HEAD would pass this check. Change a selected fixture in a later commit, then change it again without committing. Sync $base after both changes and compare the destination with a saved copy of the base fixture. This tests the PR's commit-selection invariant rather than only the initial copy.

If the repository is auto discovered via a .git file (e.g. from submodules, or a linked worktree), the .git location would be the final location where the .git directory is, not where the .git file is. ... core.worktree ... Set the path to the root of the working tree. If`GIT_COMMON_DIR` environment variable is set, core.worktree is ignored and not used for determining the root of working tree. This can be overridden by the`GIT_WORK_TREE` environment variable and the`--work-tree` command-line option. The value can be an absolute path or relative to the path to the .git directory, which is either specified by --git-dir or GIT_DIR, or automatically discovered. If --git-dir or GIT_DIR is specified but none of --work-tree, GIT_WORK_TREE and core.worktree is specified, the current working directory is regarded as the top level of your working tree. ... Note that this variable is honored even when set in a configuration file in a ".git" subdirectory of a directory and its value differs from the latter directory (e.g. "/path/to/.git/config" has core.worktree set to "/different/path"), which is most likely a misconfiguration. Running Git commands in the "/path/to" directory will still use "/different/path" as the root of the work tree and can cause confusion unless you know what you are doing (e.g. you are creating a read-only snapshot of the same index to a location different from the repository’s usual working tree). ... core.hooksPath ... By default Git will look for your hooks in the $GIT_DIR/hooks directory. Set this to different path, e.g. /etc/git/hooks, and Git will try to find your hooks in that directory, e.g. /etc/git/hooks/pre-receive instead of in $GIT_DIR/hooks/pre-receive. ... The path can be either absolute or relative. A relative path is taken as relative to the directory where the hooks are run (see the "DESCRIPTION" section of githooks[5]). ... This configuration variable is useful in cases where you’d like to centrally configure your Git hooks instead of configuring them on a per-repository basis, or as a more flexible and centralized alternative to having an`init.templateDir` where you’ve changed default hooks. <title>Git - git Documentation</title> https://git-scm.com/docs/git --git-dir= : Set the path to the repository (".git" directory). This can also be controlled by setting the `GIT_DIR` environment variable. It can be an absolute path or relative path to current working directory. ... Specifying the location of the ".git" directory using this option (or `GIT_DIR` environment variable) turns off the repository discovery that tries to find a directory with ".git" subdirectory (which is how the repository and the top-level of the working tree are discovered), and tells Git that you are at the top level of the working tree. If you are not at the top-level directory of the working tree, you should tell Git where the top-level of the working tree is, with the `--work-tree=` option (or `GIT_WORK_TREE` environment variable) ... --work-tree= : Set the path to the working tree. It can be an absolute path or a path relative to the current working directory. This can also be controlled by setting the GIT_WORK_TREE environment variable and the core.worktree configuration variable (see core.worktree in git-config[1] for a more detailed discussion). ... --bare : Treat the repository as a bare repository. If GIT_DIR environment is not set, it is set to the current working directory. ... git-hook[1] : Run git hooks ... Read githooks[5] for more details about each hook. ... `GIT_INDEX_FILE` : This environment variable specifies an alternate index file. If not specified, the default of `$GIT_DIR/index` is used. ... `GIT_DIR` : If the `GIT_DIR` environment variable is set then it specifies a path to use instead of the default `.git` for the base of the repository. The `--git-dir` command-line option also sets this value. ... `GIT_WORK_TREE` : Set the path to the root of the working tree. This can also be controlled by the `--work-tree` command-line option and the core.worktree configuration variable. ... `GIT_COMMON_DIR` : If this variable is set to a path, non-worktree files that are normally in $GIT_DIR will be taken from this path instead. Worktree-specific files such as HEAD or index are taken from $GIT_DIR. See gitrepository-layout[5] and git-worktree[1] for details. This variable has lower precedence than other path variables such as GIT_INDEX_FILE, GIT_OBJECT_DIRECTORY… <title>Git - git-hook Documentation</title> https://git-scm.com/docs/git-hook In general, when instructions suggest adding a script to `.git/hooks/`, you can specify it in the config instead by running: ... ``` git config set hook.<some-name>.command <path-to-script> git config set --append hook.<some-name>.event <hook-event> ``` ... This way you can share the script between multiple repos. That is, `cp` `~/my-script.sh` `~/project/.git/hooks/pre-commit` would become: ... ``` git config set hook.my-script.command ~/my-script.sh git config set --append hook.my-script.event pre-commit ... run : Runs hooks configured for, in the order they are discovered during the config parse. The default from the hookdir is run last. See githooks[5] for supported hook names. ... -scope ... prefix each configured ... a tab- ... `, `global`, ... system`), mirroring ... `--show-scope`. ... from the hookdir ... hook..command : The command to execute for `hook.`. is a unique name that identifies this hook. The hook events that trigger the command are configured with `hook.` `.event`. The value can be an executable path or a shell oneliner. If more than one value is specified for the same, only the last value parsed is used. See git-hook[1]. ... hook..event : The hook events that trigger `hook.`. The value is the name of a hook event, like "pre-commit" or "update". (See githooks[5] for a complete list of hook events.) On the specified event, the associated `hook.` `.command` is executed. This is a multi-valued key. To run `hook.` on multiple events, specify the key more than once. An empty value resets the list of events, clearing any previously defined events for `hook.`. See git-hook[1]. ... hook..enabled : Whether the hook `hook.` is enabled. Defaults to `true`. Set to `false` to disable the hook without removing its configuration. This is particularly useful when a hook is defined in a system or global config file and needs to be disabled for a specific repository. See git-hook[1].

Clear Git’s local environment before using the temporary repository.

The checked-in CI path does not set these variables. If someone runs this test from a Git hook, Git inherits the hook’s repository variables. git -C "$server" does not clear them, so add and commit can use the hook’s repository instead of the temporary one.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Compare fixture contents after a rejected sync.

ls -A detects added or removed names, but it does not detect overwritten files. If a sync rewrites SOURCE, index.json, or a fixture before rejecting the ref, expect_reject still reports success. Snapshot the directory contents and compare them after each rejection. Include a rejection case whose server fixture differs from the destination copy.

The Apple regression workflow (Xcode 26.3, Swift 6.2) fails the iOS
build on main since #342 with "the compiler is unable to type-check this
expression in reasonable time" at ContentView.body. #342 added the remote
playback wiring and two confirmation dialogs to a modifier chain that was
already long; tvOS and macOS still compiled because those modifiers are
iOS-only.

Split the chain into staged properties (presentedContent,
appEventContent, sessionTaskContent, body) and move the iOS remote
playback wiring and its two dialogs into a private ViewModifier. Code
moved verbatim and modifier order is unchanged, so behavior is the same.
With Xcode 27 the body getter dropped from 1317ms to at most 241ms for
the largest stage.

scripts/sync-apiv2-fixtures.sh vendored whatever the server checkout had
at HEAD, so the recorded pin (ba18bf120) drifted off server main. Eighteen
fixtures were written by hand even though the server now publishes
seventeen of them, seven with different content, and the diagnostics
contract carried no record of where it came from.

The script now takes a required server ref, resolves it to a commit in
SILO_SERVER_REPO, and reads every byte with git show <commit>:<path>; it
never looks at the server working tree or HEAD. It refuses to run while a
client-authored fixture shadows one the server publishes. Re-vendored at
84ed9e596: the seventeen published fixtures replace the hand-written
copies, playback_stop_draining stays client-authored, and SOURCE lists the
two kinds separately. The script also mirrors the diagnostics contract
(picking up the server's newer manifest.schema.json) and writes a SOURCE
for it. The contract test expects the 31-entry index.

…h reliable

The fixture sync looked up published names by piping the server listing
into grep -q under pipefail. Once the listing outgrows a pipe buffer, grep
exits early, printf gets SIGPIPE, and the lookup fails: valid SELECTED
names are reported missing and the shadowing guard silently passes. The
script also treated every leftover *.json as client-authored, so a
fixture dropped from SELECTED after the server removed it stayed on disk
labeled as hand-written, and it defaulted SILO_SERVER_REPO to one
workstation's path.

The lookup now reads the listing from a here-string. Client-authored
fixtures are an explicit AUTHORED list: the script refuses to run if one
is missing, also selected, or now published, and deletes any other *.json
in the APIv2 directory. SOURCE lists AUTHORED. SILO_SERVER_REPO is
required. A new shell test runs the script against a throwaway server
repository with a listing far past a pipe buffer, and the CI scripts
workflow runs it.

P2 Badge Reject selected fixtures missing from the index

When a server commit still contains a selected fixture body but removes or renames its index.json entry, this filter silently omits that fixture and the sync exits successfully, leaving SOURCE claiming it was vendored while index-based tests cannot discover it. Validate that the filtered index contains exactly one entry for every name in SELECTED before replacing the destination index.

Brings in the API v2 migration (#349–#400). The only conflict was

contract (#364) at the same server commits, so its SOURCE note is taken
as is and this branch no longer changes the contract files.
