Problem

Closes #664
Related issue: Silo-Server/silo-server#2021
Validation tasks: none

The server locks a profile for five minutes after five wrong PINs and answers verify-pin with 429 and Retry-After. On iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Mac, that 429 closed the PIN prompt and showed a generic error on the profile picker, with no hint of how long to wait. The prompt now stays open and shows "Too many incorrect PINs. Try again in N minutes."

Approach

verify-pin accepts a 429 and turns it into a new ProfileTransitionError.pinLockedOut(retryAfter:). Its message rounds Retry-After up to whole minutes and falls back to "Too many incorrect PINs. Try again later." when the header is missing, not a number of seconds, or longer than a day. The wording matches the web app's.

The profile picker's PIN prompt is the only caller of verify-pin; it covers both choosing a profile and unlocking profile management. It shows the lockout message in place and keeps the prompt open.

To read the header, HTTPClient.requestData's existing acceptedStatuses option now also applies to requests made without a request identity. The picker has no active profile, so its requests take that path. No other caller passes acceptedStatuses on that path, so nothing else changes.

The lockout clears the entered digits, shakes the dots and fires the error haptic, as a wrong PIN does. The app shows no attempt counter, so nothing is counted.

Validation

  • iOS unit tests (iPhone 17 Pro simulator, iOS 26.5): the profiles test class, including one new test for 429 with, without and with an out-of-range Retry-After, 18 passed, 0 failed.
  • tvOS: SiloTV builds (compile only, CODE_SIGNING_ALLOWED=NO). Tests not run.
  • macOS: not built.
  • Not run against a live server; the lockout was not seen on a device or simulator.

Evidence

Evidence: not captured yet. This change alters what a user sees in the PIN prompt, and a capture needs a server with the lockout from Silo-Server/silo-server#2021. Before-and-after captures are still owed.

Surface and build: PIN prompt on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.

Risks

None identified. A 429 from verify-pin was already an error; only its presentation changes. The prompt's status line now grows when the lockout message wraps; this was not checked on screen.

Show profile PIN lockout message when verifyHouseholdPIN returns HTTP 429

  • verifyHouseholdPIN now accepts HTTP 429 via the new raw-response helper householdResponse and converts it into ProfileTransitionError.pinLockedOut, parsing Retry-After as a seconds duration. Other statuses still fail as before.
  • HTTPClient.requestData and performWithAuthRetry now pass an acceptedStatuses set through, so accepted statuses (including after a token-refresh retry) return the raw response instead of an HTTP error.
  • The PIN prompt stays open on lockout and shows the localized message: durations up to one day round up to whole minutes, while missing, non-positive, non-finite, or over-a-day values show a generic retry-later message.
  • The status line in PINEntryView.swift now uses a minimum height with centered, wrapped error text on both iOS and tvOS.
  • Behavioral Change: the household JSON decoder no longer receives the response URL as artwork-server context; check householdRequest in APIv2Client.swift for decoding that depended on that context.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The app now handles HTTP 429 responses from profile PIN verification as lockouts. It uses Retry-After to build a localized wait message when available, and displays that message in the profile picker’s PIN prompt.

Changes

PIN lockout handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Lockout error and accepted-status support
iosApp/iosApp/Screens/Profiles/ProfileTransitionError.swift, iosApp/iosApp/Networking/HTTPClient.swift
ProfileTransitionError now represents a PIN lockout and formats positive retry intervals as rounded-up minutes. HTTP requests forward accepted statuses through initial and retried responses.
PIN verification response handling
iosApp/iosApp/Networking/APIv2/APIv2Client.swift
householdResponse returns the raw response after forwarding accepted statuses. verifyHouseholdPIN accepts 429, maps it to a lockout error, and continues to require 200 for successful decoding.
Profile picker lockout display
iosApp/iosApp/Screens/Profiles/ProfileSelectionView.swift, iosApp/iosApp/Screens/Profiles/PINEntryView.swift, iosApp/Tests/ProfilesV2Tests.swift
The profile picker displays the localized lockout error and leaves the PIN prompt open. The error text is centered. Tests cover Retry-After values of 241 and 60 seconds and an absent header.

An unusually large lockout interval can interrupt the PIN prompt, and the longer message still needs an on-screen layout check. These are bounded risks to address or accept before merging.

Explanation

Issue #664 requires a 429 from verify-pin to show the lockout message, round a valid Retry-After value up to whole minutes, use a later fallback when the header is unavailable, and avoid counting the lockout as another wrong attempt. The changes implement the 429 mapping, message formatting, fallback, and open prompt behavior. However, ProfileSelectionView.handlePINEntry increments wrongPINCount in the pinLockedOut branch. This conflicts with the issue requirement and with the branch comment.

Evidence: FAIL. This PR changes what users see in the PIN prompt, but the Evidence section has no captures. It says before-and-after captures are "still owed."

Missing:

  • Before and after captures of the PIN prompt on iPhone hitting a verify-pin 429. Before should show the prompt closing with the generic error. After should show the prompt staying open with "Too many incorrect PINs. Try again in N minutes."
  • The same after capture on Apple TV, since tvOS is listed as a changed surface. It would also show whether the message wraps cleanly to two lines, which the Risks section says hasn't been checked.

You don't need a live server with Silo-Server/silo-server#2021. A local server on that branch or a stubbed 429 response with Retry-After works fine for the captures.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Parse the HTTP-date form of Retry-After.

If Retry-After contains a valid future HTTP-date, TimeInterval.init returns nil. The prompt then says “Try again later” although the server supplied a wait time. Parse both numeric seconds and HTTP-dates, then pass the remaining interval to pinLockedOut. Based on learnings, Retry-After can use either form.

On CodeRabbit's unverified finding about the HTTP-date form of Retry-After (APIv2Client.swift:352): not changing this. Silo-Server/silo-server#2021 defines the header on verify-pin as a number of seconds, and that is the contract #664 asks the client to follow. If a date ever arrived, the prompt would show "Try again later", which is the fallback the issue specifies for a header it cannot use.

Posted with Claude Code (claude-opus-5-5) at the author's direction.

A locked-out profile closed the PIN prompt and showed a generic error on
the picker. The prompt now stays open and says how long to wait, from
Retry-After rounded up to whole minutes, or "later" without the header.

HTTPClient's acceptedStatuses now also applies to requests without a
request identity, which is how the picker calls verify-pin.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A Retry-After of "inf" or "1e300" parsed as a number and trapped in the
Int conversion; anything over a day now reads "Try again later". The PIN
prompt's status line had a fixed height, so a wrapped lockout message
could overlap the keypad; it now grows.
