docs: explain optional HEVC encoding and worker requirements #31
Silo-Server/silo-server#1557 adds Allow HEVC encoding under Admin > Settings > Playback, with a default of off (playback.allow_hevc_encoding=false). Update the manual after that PR merges.
Update src/content/docs/docs/running-a-server/playback.md to explain when to enable the setting: the client must support HEVC over HLS, and an executor permitted by routing policy must support the HEVC recipe. HEVC output uses fragmented MP4. H.264 remains available for compatible clients when HEVC cannot be selected. Disabling the setting affects new playback decisions; active sessions retain their selected codec. HEVC direct play and remux work independently of this setting.
Update src/content/docs/docs/running-a-server/transcode-nodes.md to explain that API-host capabilities do not establish worker capabilities, and each selected worker must support the negotiated recipe. Explain the software encoding fallback when the selected hardware cannot encode HEVC. A GPU may still perform tone mapping while the CPU encodes; Activity reports the encoder actually used.
Apple and Android expose their existing playback capabilities; this setting belongs in web administration.
AI assistance: gpt-6-astra through T3 Code / OpenAI Codex inspected the setting, negotiation paths, and current manual, and wrote this documentation task.
Also cover Silo-Server/silo-server#1571 when updating src/content/docs/docs/running-a-server/playback.md. That PR merged as 8363ddc6c9be35bfdb913dbbfbc0f06377fa27dd; this part of the manual update can now be published.
Under Choose and test acceleration, step 2 currently says “Leave Transcoding on.” The toggle in Admin > Settings > Playback and the setup wizard is now labeled Video transcoding. Use that label and explain that turning it off stops video re-encoding while remuxing and audio conversion remain available. The default stays on.
The new field description is: “Off never re-encodes video. Silo still repackages files and converts audio for devices that need it.” This is a wording correction; playback behavior and the native API do not change. Apple, Android, and Jellyfin clients need no changes for this PR.
AI disclosure: gpt-6-astra in T3 Code using the Codex provider.
