This adds five things to the exported request telemetry, and moves custom header capture from the startup config onto the exporter resource.

Fixes api7/ticket-analysis#1051

Structured output content (OTLP, content_mode: full). gen_ai.output.messages used to be one text part holding whatever plain text the handler assembled, so reasoning was never exported and tool calls only showed up as flattened text, if at all. It is now one assistant message with ordered text / reasoning / tool_call parts, following semconv v1.41 gen-ai-output-messages.json. Tool call arguments is the parsed JSON value when it parses, and the raw string when it does not. The parts are read off what the caller actually received: the response JSON for a buffered answer, and the SSE frames as they leave the gateway for a stream (aisix_obs::output, fed by the telemetry middleware). So output-guardrail masking is reflected, and native and bridged paths are captured the same way. This covers chat completions, /v1/messages and /v1/responses.

  • Kept: chat reasoning_content/reasoning, content, tool_calls. Anthropic text, thinking, tool_use. Responses message text, the readable summary/text of reasoning items, and function_call.
  • Never exported: encrypted_content.
  • Left out: Anthropic redacted_thinking, plus every block with no exact v1.41 part type (chat refusal/audio; Anthropic server-tool blocks; Responses refusal content and every non-function tool-call item).
  • If the captured parts outgrow the capture cap, the export falls back to the flat text exactly as before. Input-side conversion and truncation are unchanged.
  • The output message's finish_reason is the conventions' enum for every protocol: tool_calls/function_call/tool_use become tool_call; max_tokens/MAX_TOKENS/length/model_context_window_exceeded/max_output_tokens become length; content_filter/content_filtered/refusal/guardrail_intervened and Gemini's SAFETY/RECITATION/BLOCKLIST/PROHIBITED_CONTENT/SPII/IMAGE_SAFETY/LANGUAGE become content_filter; MALFORMED_FUNCTION_CALL/UNEXPECTED_TOOL_CALL/TOO_MANY_TOOL_CALLS/error become error; everything else (stop, end_turn, stop_sequence, STOP, unknown values) becomes stop. gen_ai.response.finish_reasons and the UsageEvent keep the raw value.
  • gen_ai.tool.definitions now carries each tool's description and parameters (an Anthropic tool's input_schema is reported as parameters) next to type and name.
  • Datadog's gen_ai.prompt/gen_ai.completion and SLS's prompt/response are untouched. The structured parts never reach those sinks.

Responses finish_reason. A Responses result names no finish reason, so /v1/responses events used to carry none, and no output message either. Now the terminal event carries one, derived from the result the caller received (native and bridged; the terminal SSE event, or the buffered body), in chat's vocabulary: completed gives tool_calls when the output holds a function_call or custom_tool_call item and stop otherwise; incomplete gives content_filter when that is the reason and length otherwise; failed, cancelled and anything else leave it empty. It reaches the control plane, Datadog and SLS like any finish reason, and OTLP gen_ai.response.finish_reasons.

api_key_name. The authenticating key's display name, snapshotted at request time. It goes on the UsageEvent (omitted when the key has none) and on OTLP as aisix.api_key_name. It is set regardless of content mode, and Datadog/SLS/object store get it the way they get every other usage field.

gateway_overhead_ms. Set on the request's terminal event, the same one that carries downstream_latency_ms; OTLP aisix.gateway_overhead_ms. It is the downstream_latency_ms window minus the time spent waiting on upstreams inside it.

  • Upstream time counted: the full upstream duration of every failed, retried or fallback attempt, plus the winning attempt's time up to its first streamed frame (or its full upstream latency when buffered).
  • Gateway time: retry backoff, guardrail calls and hold-back.
  • How it is measured: a per-request upstream clock on the attribution cell, driven from monotonic timestamps at the attempt boundaries (RoutingTelemetry, plus explicit hooks on the surfaces that dispatch without it: passthrough, MCP, A2A, jobs) and at the winner's first frame.
  • /v1/realtime runs detached from that scope, so it computes the gateway's share of a session itself: the time before the upstream dial.
  • An ensemble request reports no gateway_overhead_ms: its members run concurrently outside any attempt window, so their wait can't be attributed.

upstream_tpot_ms. Set on successful streamed attempts that produced at least two output tokens; OTLP aisix.upstream_tpot_ms. It is (upstream_latency_ms - upstream_ttft_ms) / (output tokens - 1). Output tokens are counted the way OTel's gen_ai.usage.output_tokens counts them, reasoning included. That keeps Gemini, which reports thoughts beside its completion count, on the same footing as OpenAI.

Audio / image tokens. prompt_audio_tokens, prompt_image_tokens, completion_audio_tokens, completion_image_tokens hold the upstream's own counts, inclusive of any cached portion, and are omitted when not reported. OTLP reports them as gen_ai.usage.{audio,image}.{input,output}_tokens, the names in the GenAI conventions' development registry.

  • Sources: OpenAI chat prompt_tokens_details / completion_tokens_details (the bridge wire, legacy completions and batch output lines too), Responses input_tokens_details / output_tokens_details (and /v1/decisions), realtime input_token_details / output_token_details, image generation/edit usage, token-billed transcription usage, and Gemini/Vertex promptTokensDetails / candidatesTokensDetails.
  • Passthrough routes get these through the typed parsers they already reuse.
  • Anthropic and Bedrock Converse report none.

Header capture moves to the exporter. Every observability_exporters kind gains request_headers and upstream_response_headers (lists of names).

  • Validation on the write schema: lowercase HTTP token names, no duplicates, no credential slot headers, and no set-cookie among the response headers. The read schema only checks the type, so a stored row a later tightening would refuse still loads; the gateway drops any refused name when capturing instead. A passthrough route's auth_header_name carries the caller's gateway key, and is never captured even if an exporter lists it.
  • Each exporter records only the names in its own lists. Request headers keep their shape (OTLP http.request.header.<name>; Datadog/SLS/object store the request_headers map).
  • Upstream response headers are recorded per attempt, off that attempt's own upstream response (OTLP http.response.header.<name> on the operation span; elsewhere an upstream_response_headers map, sanitised like request headers). They come in through aisix_gateway::note_upstream_response, which every provider bridge and every proxy-side upstream call now reports to; Bedrock does it through an SDK interceptor.
  • Neither map is sent to the control plane on /dp/telemetry any more.
  • /mcp records request headers but no upstream response headers: the MCP client transport doesn't expose them.

Behaviour changes on upgrade:

  • observability.usage_event.request_headers (1.6.0) is now a tombstone: it still parses, does nothing, and boot warns once to configure the headers on the exporter. A gateway that relied on it stops recording those headers until its exporters list them. It is removed from config.example.yaml / config.managed.yaml / config.reference.json. The Helm chart drops it in a held chart PR.
  • /dp/telemetry events no longer carry request_headers. The control plane does not read that field.
  • OTLP gen_ai.output.messages parts, its finish_reason (now the conventions' enum) and gen_ai.tool.definitions entries change shape as described above. /v1/responses events gain a finish_reason. The Datadog, SLS and object-store content fields do not change.
  • New UsageEvent fields are additive and omitted when unset; the control plane binds /dp/telemetry leniently.
  • The modality counts are not written into the response cache, so gateways of different releases sharing one Redis cache keep reading each other's entries. A cache hit reports none.

Tests: DP standalone e2e. otlp-structured-output-e2e covers streamed and buffered chat, native and bridged messages, and native and bridged responses, each with reasoning plus a tool call. usage-event-latency-modality-e2e covers a retried request's overhead, a stream's overhead and TPOT, key name, and audio/image counts. usage-event-request-headers-e2e is rewritten for per-exporter isolation across two SLS exporters and an OTLP one, per-attempt response headers on a retried request, and the tombstone warning. A telemetry-sender test pins that the /dp/telemetry body carries neither header map. There are unit tests for the output collector, the upstream clock, schema validation, and sink encodings.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Exporters can capture selected request and upstream response headers, with sensitive headers excluded and values sanitized.
    • Usage telemetry includes audio and image token counts, API-key names, and upstream timing details.
    • Full-content telemetry can include structured assistant output, including reasoning, text, and tool calls, across supported APIs.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved Responses API finish-reason reporting and preservation of tool descriptions and schemas in telemetry.
  • Configuration

    • The former usage-event header setting is retired. Configurations using it still load with a warning; configure header capture per exporter instead.

…re, latency breakdown, modality tokens

- OTLP gen_ai.output.messages carries the caller-received assistant turn as
  ordered reasoning / text / tool_call parts (chat, messages, responses;
streamed and buffered; native and bridged), read off the client-facing
wire so masking is reflected. gen_ai.tool.definitions now carries each
tool's description and parameter schema. Datadog / SLS flat content is
  unchanged.
- UsageEvent api_key_name (OTLP aisix.api_key_name).
- UsageEvent gateway_overhead_ms (OTLP aisix.gateway_overhead_ms) on the
terminal event: the caller's wait minus every attempt's upstream wait,
the winner's counted to its first streamed frame.
- UsageEvent upstream_tpot_ms (OTLP aisix.upstream_tpot_ms) on successful
  streamed attempts.
- prompt/completion audio/image token counts as the upstream reports them
  (OTLP gen_ai.usage.{audio,image}.{input,output}_tokens).
- observability_exporters gain request_headers / upstream_response_headers;
each exporter records only its own names; neither map reaches
  /dp/telemetry. observability.usage_event.request_headers is a tombstone.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds exporter-specific request and upstream-response header capture, structured assistant output capture, and expanded usage and latency telemetry. It updates configuration, provider integrations, proxy attribution, telemetry exporters, and end-to-end coverage.

Changes: Observability telemetry

Layer / File(s) Summary
Exporter header configuration and capture
config.*, crates/aisix-core/src/config.rs, crates/aisix-core/src/models/*, crates/aisix-gateway/src/response_tap.rs, crates/aisix-proxy/src/client_ip.rs, crates/aisix-proxy/src/state.rs, schemas/*
Exporter configurations add request and upstream-response header selections. Gateway capture filters and sanitizes selected values. The legacy observability.usage_event block remains parseable, produces a warning, and no longer configures capture.
Upstream header and timing attribution
crates/aisix-a2a/src/bridge.rs, crates/aisix-provider-*/src/bridge.rs, crates/aisix-proxy/src/attribution.rs, crates/aisix-proxy/src/{a2a,mcp,passthrough_route,realtime,responses,responses_bridge,stream_timeout}.rs, crates/aisix-proxy/AGENTS.md, tests/e2e/src/cases/usage-event-request-headers-e2e.test.ts
Provider and proxy paths report upstream response headers. Request attribution tracks headers by routing attempt and records upstream wait and first-frame timing.
Usage data and exporter telemetry
crates/aisix-gateway/src/chat.rs, crates/aisix-provider-*/src/{bridge,wire}.rs, crates/aisix-obs/src/{usage.rs,otlp_http_sink.rs,sink/*}, crates/aisix-proxy/src/*.rs, crates/aisix-server/src/telemetry.rs, tests/e2e/src/cases/usage-event-latency-modality-e2e.test.ts
Usage events and spans gain API-key names, audio and image token counts, gateway overhead, and upstream TPOT. Proxy paths propagate these fields, and exporters emit selected headers and telemetry attributes.
Structured output capture and rendering
crates/aisix-obs/src/{output.rs,genai.rs,otlp_http_sink.rs}, crates/aisix-obs/src/sink/{record.rs,datadog.rs,sls.rs}, crates/aisix-proxy/src/{attribution.rs,chat.rs,lib.rs,messages.rs,responses.rs,usage_attr.rs}, tests/e2e/src/cases/{otlp-genai-semconv-e2e.test.ts,otlp-structured-output-e2e.test.ts}
Output collectors assemble bounded text, reasoning, and tool-call parts from buffered responses or SSE streams. GenAI output conversion uses captured parts when available and maps Responses finish reasons. Tests cover streamed and buffered routes and tool definitions.

With full content capture enabled, OTLP telemetry for streamed cross-provider Messages responses will be missing reasoning and tool-call output parts. Buffered responses do include them. Requests are served correctly, but this telemetry feature is incomplete for streaming and should be finished or explicitly accepted before merge.

Explanation

E2E Test Quality Review: PASS. The PR adds three E2E suites that drive a real aisix binary with mock upstreams and check exported telemetry: - otlp-structured-output-e2e.test.ts (507 lines, 9 tests): streamed and buffered chat, native and bridged Anthropic and Responses. Checks ordered output parts, tool definitions, and that redacted_thinking and encrypted_content are absent from OTLP output. The SLS flat response is also checked. - usage-event-latency-modality-e2e.test.ts (293 lines, 4 tests): key names on retry events, overhead excluding upstream waits, TPOT formula, and audio/image token counts. - usage-event-request-headers-e2e.test.ts (rewritten, 9 tests): per-exporter header lists, credential-header exclusion, empty authorization, per-attempt response headers, and the retired usage_event.request_headers tombstone. Against the rubric: - Completeness (blocking): Tests cover the full flow from HTTP request through the app to OTLP/SLS/mock sinks. Mock upstreams are justified because they stand in for external providers. - Scenario coverage (important): Failure and retry paths, streamed vs. buffered, and negative cases (redacted/encrypted payloads, credential headers) are covered. I did not find E2E cases for the output-cap overflow fallback or set-cookie exclusion. This is a gap, not a blocking failure. - Readability: Each file opens with a header comment that ties the tests to the ticket. Constants are named (CALLER_HASH, EXPECTED_PARTS). Assertions use structured attribute lookups. - Relationships and mocking: I did not find shared-state ordering assumptions. Tests skip cleanly when etcd or the app is unavailable. Limits: I did not review the Rust error-handling or concurrency paths in depth (for example, response_tap task-local scoping). I did not run the tests. The PR scope matches its stated objectives. The check passes on the E2E criteria. The cap-overflow and set-cookie E2E gap is worth a follow-up.

Full details: Security Check

Explanation

No explicit security failure condition is introduced by this PR, based on the diff and the surrounding code. Category 1 (sensitive data in logs/responses): The diff adds no tracing/log calls. The new header maps are #[serde(skip)] on UsageEvent (crates/aisix-obs/src/usage.rs), and a test checks they stay off the control-plane wire. Exporters receive only their own listed names via SinkRecord::with_exporter_headers. Captured header values are limited to 256 characters and stripped of control characters. Credentials are excluded at capture time by exported_header_names (crates/aisix-proxy/src/client_ip.rs), which drops CREDENTIAL_SLOT_HEADERS (authorization, x-api-key, cookie, proxy-authorization, api-key, x-goog-api-key, and others). It also drops set-cookie on the response side. This applies even when a stored exporter row names a refused header. Passthrough routes: the matched route's auth_header_name is a gateway-key slot, and it can be any name such as x-aisix-api-key or x-gw-key. passthrough_route.rs now removes that slot from client.request_headers before attribution and dispatch. The dispatch-time copy at line ~1037 uses the post-removal map. I found no other copy that captures the slot. Category 2 (unencrypted secrets in DB): The PR adds no secret-bearing persisted fields. api_key_name is a display name, not a credential. Category 3 (authz): No endpoint permission changes are in the diff. Category 4–7: Not applicable to this diff. The removed usage_event.request_headers startup validation is replaced by capture-time filtering, so the credential guard still holds. Content capture: The new OTLP structured output is opt-in through content_mode: full. Encrypted reasoning and redacted thinking are excluded. Datadog and SLS content fields are unchanged. Residual notes, not failures: The response-side allowlist excludes only set-cookie and the credential-slot list. Operators choose the names they capture, and only enabled exporters receive them.

…easured, interleaved reasoning order

- UsageStats.modality is not serialized: cached responses must stay readable
by a gateway release without the field (rolling upgrade, rollback).
- Ensemble members run outside attempt windows: their request reports no
gateway_overhead_ms and no fallback response headers rather than wrong ones.
- Chat parts follow arrival order when reasoning and text interleave; an
Anthropic tool_use with no arguments reports {}; an oversized SSE frame
  marks the capture cut.
…re a route's credential slot

- The lenient read schema no longer checks exporter header names: a stored
row naming one a later release refuses must keep loading. The gateway
drops refused names (credential slots, set-cookie, non-token names) when
  capturing instead.
- A passthrough route's auth_header_name carries the caller's gateway key;
it is removed from the captured request headers even when an exporter
  lists it.
…put messages

- /v1/responses terminal events carry finish_reason derived from the result
the caller received (native and bridged; terminal SSE event or buffered
body): completed -> tool_calls when the output asks for a tool, else
stop; incomplete -> content_filter or length; other statuses none.
- gen_ai.output.messages[].finish_reason is the GenAI conventions' enum
  (stop, length, content_filter, tool_call, error) for every protocol;
gen_ai.response.finish_reasons and the usage event keep the raw value.

Render the Anthropic JSON once and reuse it.

The code calls chat_response_into_anthropic_json(&resp, model_name) inside the capture closure. It calls the same function again at Line 2636 for the response body. When content capture is on, every buffered cross-provider response is serialized twice. Compute json before captured_content and pass &json to OutputCollector::from_body.
