Summary

First-run setup exposed a separate validation step and repeated provider controls, while the README mixed getting started with operator details. This change gives personal study a short starting path and combines format validation with question review, preserving explicit approval and hash-bound Apply.

It also fixes two reliability issues: removing/reinviting a household member can no longer revive an old session, and the launcher reports browser failures/startup progress without claiming readiness after a worker exits. The Linux preview installer accepts its exact version-pinned sibling archive with the existing checksum gate.

Routes touched

  • /onboarding: seven stages, one Review questions action, shared provider/navigation controls; removed the unused standalone validation action.
  • /signin, /invite/[token], /setup: shared CAPTCHA script/error markup with existing form behavior retained.
  • No new routes. The shared key panel also serves /settings/ai; household removal and desktop startup retain their existing entry points.

Tests added or updated

  • Wizard validation/retry, stale responses, provider switching, generation and explicit Apply; fresh-install and packaged-browser checks aligned with the shorter flow.
  • Student/parent session revocation after removal/reinvitation, token cleanup and transactional rollback.
  • Browser-opener outcomes and worker exit during startup.
  • Six Linux sibling-archive/precedence/checksum cases, with native acceptance exercising the default installer path.
  • PDF rasterization cleanup/cache cases. Tests exclusively for deleted, unused helpers were removed; active auth/data isolation tests remain.

End-of-session checklist

  • pnpm format:check clean
  • pnpm lint clean
  • pnpm typecheck clean
  • pnpm test green
  • pnpm test:e2e green
  • pnpm build clean
  • Relevant guides updated; no new environment variables
  • Changed behavior has focused regression coverage
  • Security/privacy impact reviewed; no private data or secrets included

Pinned CI passed for current head c58c85bf829debf5bb9ea89ecf3194239c374d4a (Actions merge 3294e1d9a8dff903b6d7fea1fc195789743318c7): formatting, lint, typecheck, all 1,560 unit tests, build and 32 Chromium tests. Linux native acceptance passed, including installer, packaged browser, upgrade/crash/rollback and archive-notice checks. Windows native acceptance passed.

Notes for the reviewer

  • Production code is 451 lines smaller, including shared components and reliability fixes. Removed only the unused clsx and tailwind-merge dependencies; remaining pins are unchanged. Pinned pnpm 10.33.0 frozen installation passes in CI.
  • CodeRabbit's full review completed on bbd27d0 with one Minor finding. Verified, fixed and resolved: late browser-opener signal exits now warn safely. The real subprocess regression failed before the fix and passes afterward, without logging the launch URL or private capability.
  • Codex's follow-up completed on the current head with no major issues or new findings. Its earlier stale-guide finding is also fixed and resolved.
  • CodeRabbit's advisory checks flag docstring coverage and interpret Make solo upgrades recoverable without losing study data #118's audit reference as an upgrade-only PR scope. This PR covers beta setup simplicity and the reliability fixes above. Issue references record remaining beta work; Make solo upgrades recoverable without losing study data #118 still needs independent-build/resume evidence. The docstring metric identifies no additional behavior defect; documentation remains focused on user steps and engineering invariants.
  • Beta reconciliation and audit inventories all 127 baseline PRs and four issues and records the applied Ponytail findings. The beta acceptance issues Make solo upgrades recoverable without losing study data #118–Align first-release help and launch material with solo-first behavior #121 remain open; the six existing open PRs are reviewed separately. Real provider grounding, manual accessibility/first-use observations and final matched release evidence remain pending.
  • Preserve answer isolation, membership/session gates, authoritative validation, cancellation, stale-response/hash checks, prune confirmation, filesystem confinement and matched upgrade state. Human review, Linux acceptance and Windows acceptance are complete.

Shorten first-run documentation and onboarding, consolidate shared UI and
remove unused helpers while preserving validation and access controls.
Revoke removed members' sessions and improve launcher/install reliability.
Record beta evidence and remaining release gates.

Please review the complete change, especially session revocation and rollback, onboarding preview/Apply guards, launcher process exit timing, PDF scratch/cache cleanup, and the pinned Linux sibling-archive selection. CI and native packaging acceptance remain required before merge.

Review in Change Stack →

Navigate logical layers of code changes, visualize relationships, and explore their blast radius.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes consolidate onboarding draft review, update Linux archive selection and launcher process handling, invalidate removed household members’ sessions, and revise ingest rasterization. They also add shared authentication components, reorganize project documentation, and remove selected helpers, dependencies, and styling rules.

Changes

Onboarding draft review

Layer / File(s) Summary
Preview planning and onboarding actions
src/actions/onboarding.ts, src/lib/onboarding.ts, src/lib/onboarding-generate.ts, tests/unit/onboarding-actions.test.ts, tests/unit/onboarding.test.ts
The separate validation action and preview wrappers are removed. Emit preview handles populated and prune-only subject trees through shared planning. Related action and unit tests use preview results.
Wizard navigation and review state
src/components/exam/OnboardingWizard.tsx, tests/unit/onboarding-wizard-ui.test.tsx, tests/unit/onboarding-generate.test.ts, tests/desktop/browser-checks.mjs, tests/e2e/fresh.spec.ts
The wizard moves directly from AI setup to Review. Review requests a draft preview and checks its version against navigation and review state. Provider key handling and generation controls are consolidated.
Question authoring and review guidance
docs/architecture.md, docs/content-authoring.md, docs/solo-installation.md
The guides describe draft review, format validation, answer-accuracy limits, subject ID selection, and explicit confirmation before applying changes.

Desktop installation and launcher

Layer / File(s) Summary
Linux archive selection and validation
install-solo.sh, tests/desktop/acceptance.mjs, tests/desktop/linux-installer.test.mjs, .github/workflows/desktop-preview.yml, docs/solo-installation.md, docs/troubleshooting.md
The Linux installer selects a matching archive beside itself when no archive is specified. Tests cover sibling archives, explicit paths, checksum failures, and download fallback.
Desktop packaging and checksum handling
scripts/desktop/package.mjs, scripts/desktop/restore-links.mjs
Packaging uses digest for archive verification and checksums, and copies support files through a shared filename list. restore-links.mjs no longer has a direct-execution handler.
Launcher startup and browser handling
scripts/launcher.mjs, tests/desktop/launcher.test.mjs
The browser opener detects early failures before detaching. The launcher monitors worker exits during startup and reports selected startup phases. Tests cover those cases and sanitized errors.

Household session invalidation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Atomic member removal and session invalidation
src/lib/households.ts, tests/unit/households.test.ts, docs/architecture.md, docs/privacy.md
Member removal increments the removed user’s session version in the removal transaction. Tests cover cookie invalidation, rejoining, new sign-in, and rollback. The documentation describes token consumption and retained study data.

Ingest page rasterization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Raster execution and cleanup
tools/examify-ingest/src/pages.ts, tests/unit/examify-ingest-generate.test.ts
Rasterization runs directly without a separate availability probe. Non-persistent rasterization uses temporary storage that is removed after success or failure. Tests cover cache reuse and cleanup.

Project documentation and beta review

Layer / File(s) Summary
README and documentation navigation
README.md, docs/README.md, docs/installation.md
The README and documentation index organize information around personal study, household installation, and development. The installation guide adds parent Student View instructions.
Beta status and evidence
docs/beta-review.md
The beta review records the reviewed baseline, project priorities, evidence gaps, pull request status, local validation results, and review method.

Shared authentication components

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared form components and key actions
src/components/exam/ExplicitTurnstile.tsx, src/components/exam/FieldError.tsx, src/components/exam/EnvKeyPanel.tsx, src/components/exam/InviteAcceptForm.tsx, src/components/exam/LoginForm.tsx, src/components/exam/SetupForm.tsx
Login, invite, and setup forms use shared Turnstile script and field-error components. The environment-key panel consolidates its action controls and displays Rotate and Clear when the field is hidden.

Exam behavior and supporting cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Exam construction and script timing
src/lib/exam/data.ts, docs/content-authoring.md, scripts/examify-data.mjs
buildExam always shuffles eligible questions before selecting the configured number. The data script uses the promise-based timer from node:timers/promises.
Removed exports, helpers, and dependencies
.github/dependabot.yml, package.json, src/lib/..., tools/examify-ingest/src/..., tests/unit/auth-mode.test.ts, tests/unit/families.test.ts
Selected exported helpers, inferred row types, and re-exports are removed. clsx and tailwind-merge are removed from dependencies and the Dependabot group.
Wizard and theme styling cleanup
src/app/globals.css
Unused theme tokens and wizard CSS rules are removed.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#118] still requires automated evidence for upgrades between independently versioned Windows and Linux packages, including an unfinished exam, and refusal of incompatible/newer or household data without mutation. The issue records that existing upgrade tests use version-labelled fixtures from one archive and do not cover an unfinished exam. This PR adds Linux sibling-archive selection tests, but the change summary does not show the missing upgrade or refusal coverage. The native package checks are still running, so they do not establish those requirements.

Resolution

Add native upgrade acceptance tests on Windows and Linux using independently versioned packages. Verify preservation of an unfinished exam and required study data. Test incompatible/newer and household-data refusal without mutation, while retaining same-version repair coverage.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

[#118] concerns safe manual upgrades and recovery. The onboarding wizard and provider-control changes, shared CAPTCHA and field-error components, household-session revocation, and PDF rasterization/cache changes do not implement those upgrade requirements. The PR summary presents them as changes, but no connection to #118 is established.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 21.67% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 60 functions across 32 files. (10 skipped: 10 unsupported.)
