# macOS High Sierra (10.13) in 2024 Setup Guide

This repository provides a guide on how to set up and use macOS High Sierra (10.13) in 2024, along with details on using **Firefox 115 ESR**, **Xcode 10.1**, and other essential tools.

## System Requirements
- **macOS Version**: High Sierra (10.13.x)
- **Processor**: Intel-based Macs (macOS High Sierra no longer supports newer Apple Silicon Macs)
- **RAM**: 4GB minimum (8GB or more recommended)
- **Storage**: 20GB of free disk space

## Setting up macOS High Sierra in 2024

While macOS High Sierra is an older version, it is still functional in 2024 for various tasks, especially for legacy software or testing. Here's how to ensure your setup works smoothly:

1. **Update macOS High Sierra** to the latest 10.13.x update:
   - Go to **Apple Menu > System Preferences > Software Update** to install the latest updates.

2. **Install legacy security updates**:
   - Apple no longer provides regular updates for High Sierra, so be sure to manually check any critical security updates available through third-party sources.

3. **Disable SIP (System Integrity Protection)** (if required for older apps or tools):
   - Reboot the Mac and hold `Command + R` to enter Recovery Mode.
   - Open the Terminal from the **Utilities** menu and run:
     ```bash
     csrutil disable
     ```
   - Reboot normally.

## Installing Firefox 115 ESR

**Firefox 115 ESR** (Extended Support Release) is the latest compatible version of Firefox that runs smoothly on macOS High Sierra.

### Steps to install:
1. **Download Firefox 115 ESR** from Mozilla’s official site:
   - [Download Firefox 115 ESR for macOS](https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/enterprise/)

2. **Install Firefox**:
   - Open the downloaded `.dmg` file.
   - Drag the Firefox icon to the **Applications** folder.

3. **Set Firefox as the default browser**:
   - Go to **Firefox Preferences** (`Cmd + ,`).
   - Set it as the default browser in the **General** tab.

### Known Issues:
- Some newer web technologies may not be fully supported in Firefox 115 ESR. Consider using alternative browsers for testing modern web applications.

## Installing Xcode 10.1

**Xcode 10.1** is the most compatible version of Xcode for macOS High Sierra. This version provides full support for older macOS and iOS development workflows.

### Steps to install:
1. **Download Xcode 10.1 from the Apple Developer site**:
   - Visit [developer.apple.com/download/more](https://developer.apple.com/download/more/) and sign in with your Apple Developer account.
   - Search for **Xcode 10.1** and download the `.xip` archive.

2. **Install Xcode 10.1**:
   - Open the `.xip` file and drag Xcode to the **Applications** folder.

3. **Install additional developer tools**:
   - Open the Terminal and run the following command to install the necessary command line tools:
     ```bash
     xcode-select --install
     ```

4. **Check if Xcode is installed properly**:
   ```bash
   xcodebuild -version
  • This should display the installed version of Xcode.
Known Issues:
  • Xcode 10.1 may not support some newer features available in later Xcode versions (e.g., SwiftUI). Use for legacy iOS/macOS development or testing.
Recommended Tools and Software
In addition to Firefox 115 ESR and Xcode 10.1, here are a few other useful tools for macOS High Sierra in 2024:
1. Homebrew
  • Install Homebrew for managing packages and dependencies.
  • Command to install:
    /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)"
2. Visual Studio Code
3. Docker (Legacy Version)
  • Docker may be unsupported for newer versions on macOS High Sierra. Look for Docker Desktop 3.x versions that support High Sierra.
4. Postman
5. iTerm2
  • Enhanced terminal for macOS with better features than the default terminal.
  • Download iTerm2
6. Slack
Common Issues & Solutions
Issue: Xcode 10.1 Crashes When Opening
  • Solution: Ensure that you are not using macOS features unsupported by Xcode 10.1. Try disabling SIP (System Integrity Protection) or re-downloading Xcode from the Developer website.
Issue: Firefox Not Opening or Crashing
  • Solution: Try resetting Firefox settings:
    • Go to Firefox Menu > Help > Troubleshooting Information and click on Refresh Firefox.
Issue: Apps Not Running Due to 32-bit Deprecation
  • Solution: Consider using virtual machines or containers for 32-bit apps. Some older software may still require 32-bit support.
Additional Tips
  • Use Virtual Machines: Since macOS High Sierra is outdated, you can use virtual machines to run newer versions of macOS or software that requires newer OS versions.
    • Software like VirtualBox or VMware Fusion works well for creating virtual environments on macOS High Sierra.
  • Back Up Regularly: Always back up important data when using older OS versions. Use Time Machine or other cloud-based backup solutions to prevent data loss.
  • Security Considerations: Be cautious with online banking or handling sensitive data on an unsupported OS. Use trusted, up-to-date software for high-risk tasks.
Note: macOS High Sierra has reached its end-of-life for official updates, so consider migrating to a newer macOS version if possible for security and feature improvements.
