I reverted the previous merge of #400 into main because I noticed some errors I wanted to fix before releasing this chapter; we will continue development here, and then re-merge. So handle the merge conflict accordingly; prefer this branch over main.

Also, in the DAG for the WCGS study, reconsider whether smoking should be modeled as a cause of personality type, or personality type as a cause of smoking; explain your reasoning in the chapter.

also, define a confounder simply as "a cause of both the exposure and outcome". If it is a cause of both, it cannot also be on the causal path between them, right? so that condition was redundant?

  • include balanced accuracy (and show that it is a linear transformation of Youden's J statistic, and thus is equivalent to use for comparing models)
  • mathematically define the C-statistic (aka AUC) and C-index

  • Resolved the merge conflict by merging main and keeping this branch’s chapter content.
  • Updated the confounder definition to the requested simple common-cause wording.
  • Reworked the WCGS DAG assumption to TypeA -> smoking and added explicit in-chapter reasoning that this is a teaching-model causal assumption; clarified that smoking is treated as a mediator under that assumption.

If it is not feasible to consider all possible combinations of dropped covariates, we can use the following backwards elimination (BWE) procedure:

  • start by dropping the one that reduces the standard error of the effect of the exposure of interest the most, among those that don't change the point estimate of the exposure effect by more than 10%
  • then repeat that process, always checking for more than 10% change from exposure effect in the gold-standard model
  • when there are no variables we can drop without either changing the exposure effect's point estimate by more than 10% or increasing its SE, we stop.
