Summary

Closes #1570

Removes tests that guard no behavior: two orphan fixtures, six phrase-pinning suites, and duplicate cases. Tightens one check that could pass on a broken path. Also cuts suite wall time: shell suites now run in parallel, and CI runs the shell and python halves as separate jobs.

Removed

  • Orphan fixtures: tests/fixtures/event1-premature.jsonl and tests/fixtures/normal-completion.jsonl. No test names them, and the only *.jsonl glob loader matches retrospect-synth-*.
  • Phrase-pinning suites: these assert that SKILL.md / ETHOS.md / reference sentences exist. They execute no code, and no hook, script or loader reads the pinned text:
    • test_critic_pre_lock_probe.sh, test_finding_approval_gate.sh, test_worktree_merge_cleanup.sh: each header says "All assertions are static document checks against SKILL.md".
    • test_codex_review_wrap_version_pins.sh, test_retrospect_cursor_concurrency.sh, test_bypass_delegation_clause.py.
  • Duplicate cases (same entrypoint, same input class, same asserted outcome):
    • test_pipefail_advisory_rewrite.py::test_the_arm_is_opt_in[None], which repeats the shell suite's arm-unset advisory cases (that suite runs under env -u PRAXIS_PIPEFAIL_ADVISORY_REWRITE).
    • test_safe_tokenize_multiline_quote.py [heredoc form], which is subsumed by test_heredoc_commit_then_merge_survives (full token list).
    • test_one_oversized_line_is_refused_before_allocation in the pre-commit-staged-file-enumeration and skill-gate-commands scan tests. iter_transcript_bounded's fstat early-out rejects the file before any read, so the per-read cap the test names is never reached. tests/test_transcript.py covers that cap with a stubbed fstat.
    • test_paths_prune.py::test_no_session_id_sweeps_everything_stale. With session_id=None the name check is skipped, which is the same path as tests/test_paths.sh case 8.
    • test_retrospect_front_load.sh case 2 marker/rc assertion, which repeats test_retrospect_active_marker.sh skill_praxis_retrospect_sets (same payload, rc and marker checked). The case keeps its unique "no candidate file" assertion.
    • tests/test_hook_utils.sh run_tokens cases whose full token stream test_safe_tokenize_multiline_quote.py already pins: fix(hooks): safe_tokenize strips # before quote state is resolved #972 body, fix(hooks): safe_tokenize drops commands across a multi-line quote #987 heredoc, ack marker, unterminated quote, line continuation, bare newline. Cases where the shell suite asserts a stream the Python file does not are kept.

Changed

  • test_wrapper_stdout_contract.sh drops its rationale-prose assertions. It keeps the template-shape assertions (rc gating, prompt-file and argv-size guards, trap, absent pipe / -p / permission-mode / budget forms), because the .py PTY run does not reach those guards.
  • test_strike_counter.sh AC16 used to grep each strike skill for the text strike-counter.sh. It now resolves the ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/... path and asserts it is an executable file.

Faster suite

  • scripts/run-tests.sh step 2 used to run every shell suite one after another. On the latest main CI run that took 13m58s of a 17m45s job. Suites now run PRAXIS_TEST_JOBS at a time (default: core count; 1 = serial) through xargs -P; macOS ships bash 3.2, so wait -n is not available. Each suite's stdout/stderr is replayed and folded in file order, so the log and the PRAXIS_SUBSKIP accounting stay as they were. Suites that source tests/_tree_mutation_lock.sh are held out of the batch and run alone.
  • PRAXIS_TEST_PART=python|shell runs one half of the steps. CI now runs the test job as a matrix over it, so the shell half runs beside pytest and the static checks.
  • tests/test_run_tests_subskip.sh extracts the new fold_sh_result() / run_sh_parallel() and adds a parallel-path case (skip fold, failure fold, replay order).

Fix found while parallelizing

test_check_fire_ledger_arm.sh, test_check_mktemp_guard.sh and test_skill_surface_freeze.sh edit a tracked file and restore it on EXIT, but never took the tree-mutation lock (#1377). In a parallel probe, test_check_mktemp_guard.sh's baseline failed (expected=0 got=1). All three now source the lock. CONTRIBUTING.md's count of tree-mutating suites ("Eleven") was already stale; it is now fifteen.

Kept deliberately

  • Arm-on negative controls: test_block_gh_state_all_rewrite.py::test_lookalikes_are_untouched, test_gh_flag_verify_rewrite.py::test_a_valid_command_is_untouched, test_pipefail_advisory_rewrite.py::test_a_command_with_nothing_to_fix_is_silent. They run with the arm on, which no shell case does, and are labelled as controls against the arm firing on a passing command.
  • test_anchor_structure_corpus.py::test_heading_fix_alone_does_not_clear_a_mixed_body, which carries a unique assertion (no SHA+rev finding).
  • Policy calls left out of scope: test_prose_evidence_clause.py, test_retrospect_falsify_recommended.sh, test_tradeoff_skill_shape.py.

Verification

See the verification anchor comment.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Automated checks now run Python and shell test suites as separate CI jobs, which can run concurrently.
    • Shell test output is presented in a consistent order, and failures are still reported.
  • Documentation
    • Contributor guidance now explains how to run either test suite and adjust shell-test concurrency, including how to run shell tests serially.

No test reads event1-premature.jsonl or normal-completion.jsonl; the
completion-signal-gate tests build their events inline.

Refs #1570
These suites asserted that SKILL.md, ETHOS.md and reference sentences
exist. They executed no code and nothing at runtime reads the pinned
text. test_wrapper_stdout_contract.sh keeps the wrapper-template shape
assertions the PTY test does not reach and drops only the rationale
prose.

Rejected: keep the suites as doc-drift alarms | no consumer reads the text, and each rewording cost a fixture edit
Refs #1570
AC16 grepped each strike skill for the text strike-counter.sh, which
still passes when the script moves. It now resolves the
${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/... path from the skill body and requires an
executable file there.

Refs #1570
Each removed case ran the same entrypoint on the same input class and
asserted the same outcome as a surviving case: the pipefail arm-unset
param, the safe_tokenize heredoc param and the shell mirrors whose
token streams the Python suite pins, two oversized-line tests that the
fstat early-out rejects before the per-read cap they name, the
no-session prune_stale test, and front-load's marker assertion.

Refs #1570
… tree

test_check_fire_ledger_arm, test_check_mktemp_guard and
test_skill_surface_freeze rewrite a tracked file, run
check-plugin-manifests.py and restore on EXIT, but never took
_tree_mutation_lock.sh. Run beside another suite, mktemp_guard's
baseline check saw a sibling's mutation and failed (expected=0 got=1).

Confidence: high
Not-tested: flock path on Linux (macOS has no flock; CI exercises it)
Refs #1570
run-tests.sh step 2 ran ~158 shell suites one after another, ~14m of an
~18m CI job. Suites now run PRAXIS_TEST_JOBS at a time (default: core
count) through xargs -P, and each one's output is replayed and folded in
file order. Suites that source _tree_mutation_lock.sh still run alone
after the batch. PRAXIS_TEST_PART=python|shell selects half the steps so
CI can run them as separate jobs.

Rejected: wait -n job pool | macOS ships bash 3.2
Confidence: medium
Not-tested: CI runner timing until the PR run
Refs #1570
The test job now runs as a matrix over PRAXIS_TEST_PART, so the shell
suites run beside pytest and the static checks instead of after them.
The coverage summary step runs on the python leg only.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The CI test job now runs separate Python and shell matrix legs. The test runner supports configurable shell-suite parallelism and runs suites that use the tree-mutation lock serially. The changes also remove selected fixtures and tests, revise retained test assertions, and update contributor documentation.

Changes

Test execution and suite coverage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Select Python and shell test parts
.github/workflows/ci.yml, scripts/run-tests.sh, CONTRIBUTING.md
The CI job runs Python and shell matrix legs. The runner validates PRAXIS_TEST_PART, runs Python tests and coverage only for the Python part, and documents the supported parts.
Schedule and report shell suites
scripts/run-tests.sh, CONTRIBUTING.md, tests/test_run_tests_subskip.sh, tests/test_check_fire_ledger_arm.sh, tests/test_check_mktemp_guard.sh, tests/test_skill_surface_freeze.sh
Non-locking shell suites can run in parallel up to PRAXIS_TEST_JOBS. The runner replays results in file order, folds skip markers and failures, and runs suites sourcing _tree_mutation_lock.sh serially. The three listed suites now source that lock.
Remove selected fixture and test coverage
tests/fixtures/*, tests/hooks/_lib/test_paths_prune.py, tests/hooks/advisory-nudge/*, tests/hooks/preflight-gate/*, tests/test_bypass_delegation_clause.py, tests/test_codex_review_wrap_version_pins.sh, tests/test_critic_pre_lock_probe.sh, tests/test_finding_approval_gate.sh, tests/test_hook_utils.sh, tests/test_prose_evidence_clause.py, tests/test_retrospect_cursor_concurrency.sh, tests/test_safe_tokenize_multiline_quote.py, tests/test_worktree_merge_cleanup.sh, tests/test_assert_lib_wrap_insensitive.sh
The two JSONL fixtures and several static-document or duplicate test cases are removed. Other changes remove selected assertions and tokenization cases or update test comments.
Revise retained structural checks
tests/hooks/completion-verify/test_strike_counter.sh, tests/test_wrapper_stdout_contract.sh
The strike-counter check now verifies that the referenced script resolves to an executable. The wrapper test adds checks for exit-code wording, prompt-size limits, unreadable or empty prompt files, and the interactive invocation’s budget flag; it removes explanatory-prose assertions.

Verification — 0ff2fb2c (rev 2)

# Claim Result
1 Full suite passes after the pruning and the parallel runner PASS(live)
2 Shell suites run in parallel and stay green; lock-taking suites run alone PASS(live)
3 The python leg still enforces the coverage floor PASS(live)
4 Splitting the job cuts the test wall time vs main PASS(live)
5 The parallel path folds skips/failures like run_sh() and can fail PASS(live)
6 strike-counter AC16 fails on a reference to a missing script PASS(live)
Unverified
  • Timing is two PR runs against one main run (37579021776); runner variance is not measured.
  • flock serialization of the 15 lock-taking suites was only exercised on Linux CI; macOS has no flock, so locally they rely on running after the parallel batch.

Carried: none — neither gap names a follow-up action.

Evidence 1 — CI run 37598172578 on `0ff2fb2c`, both legs pass

Both matrix legs passed on the PR head.

$ gh run watch 37598172578 --repo devseunggwan/praxis --exit-status --interval 30 >/dev/null 2>&1; echo "run rc=$?"; gh run view 37598172578 --repo devseunggwan/praxis --json jobs -q '.jobs[]|select(.name|startswith("test"))|"\(.name)\t\(.conclusion)\t\(.startedAt)\t\(.completedAt)"'
run rc=0
test (shell)	success	2026-10-07T09:05:22Z	2026-10-07T09:12:03Z
test (python)	success	2026-10-07T09:05:23Z	2026-10-07T09:09:12Z
Evidence 2 — shell leg log

The shell leg ran step 2 only and ended green, AC16 included.

$ gh run view 37598172578 --repo devseunggwan/praxis --log --job 112715775854 | grep -E 'ALL TESTS|TEST SUITE|AC16'
  ✓ AC16 skill files exist + reference strike-counter.sh
ALL TESTS PASSED
Evidence 3 — python leg log

pytest and the coverage report ran on the python leg, and the run passed under PRAXIS_TESTS_STRICT=1.

$ gh run view 37598172578 --repo devseunggwan/praxis --log --job 112715776031 | grep -E 'passed in|TOTAL|ALL TESTS'
2523 passed in 154.99s (0:02:34)
TOTAL                                                                   25498  12050    53%
ALL TESTS PASSED
Evidence 4 — timing vs main

main run 37579021776 ran one test job: 17m45s, of which step 2 (shell, serial) took 13m58s (=== shell tests === 06:01:51 → === manifest check === 06:15:49). On this PR the legs run side by side, so wall time is the slower (shell) leg: 6m41s on this run (−62%), 6m23s on run 37596949904 (−64%). The shell leg's run-tests.sh step took 6m13s / 5m48s (−55% / −58% vs 13m58s).

$ gh api repos/devseunggwan/praxis/actions/jobs/112715775854 -q '.steps[]|select(.name|startswith("Run bash scripts/run-tests"))|"\(.started_at) \(.completed_at)"'

$ gh api repos/devseunggwan/praxis/actions/jobs/112712124442 -q '.steps[]|select(.name|startswith("Run bash scripts/run-tests"))|"\(.started_at) \(.completed_at)"'
2026-10-07T08:56:10Z 2026-10-07T09:01:58Z
Evidence 5 — parallel fold test, with a mutation control

tests/test_run_tests_subskip.sh passes on the shipped runner. With run_sh_parallel()'s rc read replaced by rc=0, the parallel case fails, so the case detects a dropped failure.

$ bash tests/test_run_tests_subskip.sh
PASS parallel run folds skips and failures
PASS parallel output is replayed in file order
Passed: 9  Failed: 0
$ bash $T/tests/test_run_tests_subskip.sh   # runner copy with rc=0
FAIL parallel run folds skips and failures: SKIPPED_TOOLS=(faketool) SHELL_FAILED=0
Evidence 6 — AC16 against a dangling reference

Pointing skills/strikes/SKILL.md at strike-counter.sh.bak makes AC16 fail; restored, the suite passes.

$ sed -i '' 's#hooks/strike-counter.sh"#hooks/strike-counter.sh.bak"#' skills/strikes/SKILL.md && bash tests/hooks/completion-verify/test_strike_counter.sh | grep -E 'AC16|Passed'
  ✗ AC16 skill files exist + reference strike-counter.sh
Passed: 26  Failed: 1
  - AC16 skill files exist + reference strike-counter.sh
$ bash tests/hooks/completion-verify/test_strike_counter.sh | tail -1
Passed: 27  Failed: 0
History
  • rev 2 — 0ff2fb2c: AC16 takes the whole quoted path (review thread). Rows 1–4 re-measured on run 37598172578; row 5 unchanged (scripts/run-tests.sh, tests/test_run_tests_subskip.sh untouched since rev 1); row 6 added.
  • rev 1 — d579806e

AC16 matched up to the first 'strike-counter.sh', so a reference to
strike-counter.sh.bak resolved to the existing script and passed. It now
takes the whole quoted path.
