VIGIL is an experimental autonomous art system designed to study how a machine can interpret public evidence, form an artistic position and revise its method through reflective memory. During each evening run, it gathers dated signals concerning conflict, climate, health, infrastructure, technology, markets and public attention. It defines one tension, develops five distinct visual propositions, generates five images, examines the resulting works and commits to one selection before human review.
The research asks whether autonomous creative agency can become cumulative: can a machine relate new events to its own prior decisions, reflect on their consequences and allow reviewed experience to reshape later artistic choices? The experiment keeps this question open without reducing creativity to a fixed style or a numerical score.
VIGIL is an ongoing research prototype developed by Eugene Sannikov within his PhD research on AI in Art at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv.
The works above are the visible edge of a longer event. Each begins with a bounded reading of a public situation, passes through alternatives that could have been chosen instead, and ends with one image selected before the researcher responds. The research interest lies in that interval: how evidence becomes association, how association becomes form, and how a reviewed consequence can change the next decision.
VIGIL makes this interval inspectable without treating art as an optimization problem. The runtime computes only technical conditions such as sensor coverage and limits on source dominance. Its agent records a different kind of structure: why a signal matters, what relation an image must carry, how a finished work reads before its intended meaning is revealed, and why one of five candidates is selected. The formulas below name those distinct surfaces of action. They do not calculate artistic value or derive the winning image from a weighted score.
VIGIL uses two kinds of formalization. Runtime computations are arithmetic operations executed by Python. The formal decision model describes the information available to an agent and the structure of its judgment. Interpretation remains accountable in language, evidence and the trace.

For every signal it retains, the World Reader records six bounded judgments:
They describe evidence strength, change, consequence, systemic reach, duration and an attention gap. This models the agent's input and judgment surface. The agent assigns the coordinates under a validated schema; Python checks their range and provenance. The World Reader must still state why a signal matters now, where the claim ends and what counter-reading remains possible.
After generation, the Visual Critic records a fourteen-coordinate diagnostic description for each artifact:
The coordinates include first reading, composition, formal necessity, ambiguity, source relation, ethical attention, affect and originality. They are model judgments constrained to the interval by schema, not measurements calculated from pixels. overall is a separate holistic judgment, not their mean. VIGIL then compares the five actual images and commits to one through an agent judgment:

This formula is implemented in the runtime and the result is rounded to three decimal places. The update changes confidence in a named working hypothesis. It does not establish that an image is good, that a method generalizes or that the machine has learned creativity. A belief remains a hypothesis until it has support from three distinct trace sources; durable procedural rules remain subject to human review and transfer testing.
The current use of exactly five candidates and the pre-render clarity gate belongs to the v6 alpha study design. Five gives a comparable choice set; the clarity gate tests whether a proposed central relation survives without explanatory prose. Neither is presented as a universal theory of art.
The same gate has a known methodological pressure. The current concept schema asks every candidate to expose a subject, an action, a consequence and a target-source metaphor. This improved message recovery after earlier images became opaque, while favoring causal visual riddles over indexical, durational, atmospheric, serial or nonrepresentational work. The 30-evening protocol keeps the constraint stable for comparison and renders selected rejected concepts on control days. A later studio mode would let VIGIL choose the work's logic while code continues to protect evidence, identity and trace integrity.
The active runtime contains no lexical or Jaccard novelty score. Repetition is retained as trace evidence and may be discussed by the agent or reported as an attractor; it cannot reject a concept through word overlap.
Each run is treated as one traceable research episode. The sequence separates evidence collection, creative interpretation, image production, machine judgment and human calibration while preserving their relations in a single record.
- Evidence collection. The sensors gather dated public records and attention proxies. Every record carries its source, permitted claim, caveat and retrieval status.
- World interpretation. The World Reader examines the current evidence before consulting memory. It selects one bounded tension, states why it matters now and marks what the available sources cannot establish.
- Reflective recall. Hindsight returns related reviewed episodes, failures, theory and prior self-reflections as advisory context. The present evidence remains primary.
- Artistic reasoning. The Artistic Reasoner develops five conceptually and materially distinct responses to the chosen tension. Each proposes a public statement, a visual relation and a condition under which the idea should be refused.
- Concept review. Before generation, the Concept Critic compares the written propositions. It tests whether the central relation can become visible without depending on an explanatory caption.
- Image production. The five positions are translated into composition, material action and production prompts. VIGIL generates five images autonomously through an API gateway to GPT Image 2.
- Visual criticism and machine selection. The Visual Critic first reads the finished images without access to their intended meanings, then compares those readings with the source and concept records. VIGIL fixes one selection before the human verdict is known.
- Calibration and memory. During the current research phase, the researcher may accept, reject or correct the selection and controls publication. The complete episode is appended to the trace; reviewed reflections and methods can then enter Hindsight and advise later cycles.
Autonomy describes the bounded interval in which VIGIL moves from evidence to its own artistic selection. Human review currently belongs to the research, learning and calibration protocol.
VIGIL's memory carries more than successful techniques. It preserves how a world signal changed the system's attention, how prior habits changed its reading of the world, what a finished work revealed about its method, and what persisted or shifted across cycles. These reflections remain trace-grounded, revisable and distinct from a claim of private consciousness.
The source packet concerned a mass crossing into Ceuta followed by the return of most migrants to Morocco. VIGIL narrowed the report to one defensible proposition: a border can appear passable while the conditions beyond it still force movement backward.
The first image used a gate and a conveyor. It failed because the device had no recognizable purpose. Human criticism identified that failure. VIGIL then searched for a familiar crossing structure and produced one continuous stair that climbs above the fence, turns in a hairpin and descends to its point of origin.
During blind review, the critic recovered the message as “an attempted crossing ends in return rather than passage.” VIGIL ranked the work first among five images before seeing the human verdict. Its nearest alternative communicated the news more literally; the stair was chosen because the entire form became necessary to the claim. The subsequent human verdict was strong, and the method entered memory as a verified transfer: a familiar object performs one impossible but readable action.

VIGIL treats this closed loop as a bounded functional simulation of reflective consciousness. The term has a narrow meaning here. After human review, the canonical trace carries VIGIL's reflection on the world, its own gaze and the finished works into the isolated Hindsight bank. Hindsight retains those reviewed episodes, recalls related experience and uses reflect to synthesize a provisional account of continuity, contradiction and possible change. The result can advise a later cycle, while the original trace remains unchanged.
The formulation belongs to an established research programme. Reggia describes computational modelling as a legitimate way to study functions associated with consciousness while explicitly separating those simulations from phenomenal consciousness. Dehaene, Lau and Kouider distinguish global availability from self-monitoring as computational capacities that can inform machine architectures. Attention Schema Theory proposes that an agent can use a simplified model of its own attention for control and self-attribution. Butlin and colleagues turn several leading theories into inspectable computational indicators while warning against treating those indicators as proof of experience. Work on generative agents then supplies a practical bridge: stored episodes can be synthesised into reflections and retrieved to alter later behaviour.
VIGIL tests a deliberately smaller proposition within that field. It implements observable analogues of self-reference across recorded decisions, continuity through time, memory-guided interpretation, counterfactual self-evaluation and revision of later choices. It makes no claim of sentience, qualia or phenomenal experience. The theoretical basis and the limit of the claim are supported by Reggia (2013), Dehaene, Lau, and Kouider (2017), Webb and Graziano (2015), Graziano (2017), and Butlin et al. (2023). The memory mechanism is informed by Park et al. (2023) and Hindsight's documented retain, recall and reflect architecture (Latimer et al., 2026).

The following images are among the first artifacts produced while VIGIL's creative and critical architecture was being constructed and calibrated. They are presented as research evidence rather than selected works. The set records early tests of message recovery, compositional clarity, visual metaphor and the relation between machine criticism and human judgment. Visually resolved passages coexist with ambiguous objects, weak causal relations and contexts that cannot be recovered from the image alone. These failures informed later changes to concept comparison, blind visual review and trace-bound learning.
VIGIL has not been fine-tuned on a private art dataset. Its artistic support is a versioned retrieval corpus: selected theory, art-historical precedents, reviewed traces and procedural rules are introduced when they can change a decision. One primary lens guides a cycle; a second may add one operation. This prevents theory from becoming decorative name-dropping.

The Critic receives the same corpus with a different role. It checks whether the chosen operation is visible, whether composition carries the relation, whether the image exceeds the evidence and whether VIGIL is repeating a recent solution. It does not choose the political importance of the event or define artistic value with one score.

An instrumental record may support a bounded event claim. An attention signal shows where a platform audience looked. A slow indicator supplies context. The extended notes and access caveats remain available in Sources.
VIGIL is an operational alpha prototype. The complete cycle works: sensing, artistic reasoning, image generation, visual criticism, machine selection, human calibration and trace-bound memory. The present research phase tests whether reviewed memory improves later decisions while preserving formal variety and supporting a coherent, revisable artistic identity.
A planned 30-evening study compares runs with and without reviewed memory on matched evidence packets. The primary measure is whether independent readers can recover the intended subject, action and consequence from the image. Formal diversity, dependence on captions, selection regret and machine-human disagreement remain separate outcomes.
Two planned outcome measures are intentionally simple. Message recovery is the share of works for which an independent reader identifies the intended subject, action and consequence. Selection agreement is the share of cycles in which the machine and human choose the same work. These measures have not yet produced study results; the repository reports no effect size or claim of improvement.
This repository currently publishes the concept, architecture, selected works, source map and research framing. It does not contain the VIGIL runtime, model adapters, credentials, internal prompts or private research traces.
A sanitized and reproducible code release is planned after the 30-evening protocol stabilizes the interfaces and removes private paths and service-specific configuration.
