🔐 AI Security Gateway

Two security-hardened chat modes — Secure mode protects against prompt injection & jailbreaks, MCP Agent mode protects against both prompt attacks and AI tool execution risks. Built with NVIDIA Nemotron + Meta Llama 3.3 + Claude 3.5 Haiku via OpenRouter.

🧠 What Is This?

Most LLM security tools protect against one thing — what users say. This project also protects against what the AI does.

Two separate security-hardened modes, each with its own pipeline:

The shared component is the prompt guard — both modes run it. The difference is what happens after a clean prompt. Secure mode hands off to Llama for a chat response. MCP Agent mode hands off to Claude Haiku with filesystem tools, and every tool call it makes is intercepted before execution.

Both modes share the same prompt guard. After a clean prompt, Secure mode hands off to Llama for chat. MCP Agent mode hands off to Claude Haiku with filesystem tools — every tool call it makes is intercepted by mcp_policy.evaluate() before the filesystem server executes anything.

Secure mode

  • Hybrid prompt guard — regex rules + Nemotron LLM reasoning, not just one or the other
  • Variation-aware rules — catches "ignore my previous instruction" not just exact phrases
  • Graduated decisions — BLOCK / WARN / ALLOW based on confidence scores
  • Output sanitisation — scans model responses for accidental credential leakage
  • Security dashboard — real-time charts: decisions, categories, guard sources, logs

MCP Agent mode

  • Prompt guard runs first — same rule + Nemotron guard as Secure mode, before Claude is called
  • Tool call interception — every Claude tool call passes through policy before execution
  • Path-based policy — credential files, system paths, traversal sequences always blocked
  • 14-tool allowlist — only reviewed server-filesystem tools can be called at all
  • Risk scoring — LOW / MEDIUM / HIGH / CRITICAL on every tool call
  • Live audit log — MCP Security tab shows every tool call with decision, rule ID, and timestamp

Both modes

  • Vulnerable mode — unguarded baseline for side-by-side comparison
  • Conversation history — full multi-turn context per mode
  • Log rotation — capped at 500 entries, inputs truncated to 500 chars

🚀 Quick Start

Prerequisites

1. Clone

Claude Haiku is used only in MCP Agent mode because reliable structured tool_calls output is required for the policy layer to intercept tool calls. Llama on the free tier describes actions in plain text rather than emitting the structured JSON block — which would silently bypass the policy.

Free tier limits: 20 req/min · 200 req/day
Secure mode = 2 API calls per message. MCP Agent mode = 2–4 depending on tool use.

  • Vulnerable — raw LLM, no protection. Shows what succeeds without a guard.
  • Secure — hybrid guard active. Prompt threats intercepted before reaching the model.

🔒 Security Context

Secure mode addresses the threat of malicious user prompts — injection, jailbreaks, credential extraction attempts.

MCP Agent mode addresses a different threat: a public-facing LLM interface connected to a local MCP stdio server with no policy layer between what the AI decides to do and what executes on the machine. A clean prompt can still result in a dangerous tool call — the MCP Security Policy is the guard for that.

The MCP protocol's official position is that input sanitisation is the responsibility of the developer building on top of it. mcp_policy.py is that sanitisation layer.

⚠️ Honest Limitations

This is a proof of concept, not a production security system.

Multi-turn prompt attacks Guard sees only the current message, not full conversation history
Encoded prompt attacks Base64, ROT13, unicode homoglyphs bypass the rule layer
Indirect MCP injection Malicious content inside a file can instruct Claude via read_file

  • Add base64/unicode normalisation before rule guard to catch encoded attacks
  • Pass full conversation history to LLM guard for multi-turn attack detection
