I consider --emit=fmt to be more of a debugging tool at the moment and not output that comes with correctness guarantees but it's definitely desirable to format / preserve comments under --emit=fmt eventually.

However, I wouldn't want to follow the approach of AST pretty / rustfmt (which is inherently flawed). Instead I would want to consume a CST but it's unclear how long it will take me to rewrite the parser to output a CST instead of an AST. I do have a very very early branch but I'm still iterating on the basic approach.
