Record what cutting 0.23.0 found: a stale tool count, a stale opener, and the diffs that find unrecorded changes - #496
Conversation
… and the diffs that find unrecorded changes The README said seventy-six tools where the table and tool-surface.md say seventy-eight: the count was right when the securekernel group became an extra on 2026-10-09 and the pool-trace pair landed after it. docs/sessions.md still said the live-control caller supplies the vmwp PID and dispatcher address, which the worker has discovered for itself since item 120, and described the standalone --sk-kd-target role as the only WinDbg route when open_sk_kd is the one that is a session. And docs/releasing.md gains the step this release had to improvise: four user-visible changes since v0.22.0 had no CHANGELOG entry, and three one-line diffs - the golden tool names, DONE.md's new headings, and the moved argument defaults - are what found them. Preserve required assertions for profiles without discovery
This is not true for every accepted adapter profile: when DispatcherProfile.discovery is absent, prepare_identity explicitly requires the caller's dispatcher_vnd and partition_id and uses them without discovering either (src/skdispatch.rs:2918-2927). A user following this new guidance with such a profile will omit those required inputs and the first arm will fail; the text should distinguish discovery-capable profiles from profiles where these fields remain required inputs (and note separately that CR3 is reported by the register provider).

…s VND and partition id Codex (P2, docs/sessions.md:129): the new sentence said the worker discovers the vmwp PID, dispatcher address, partition ID and CR3, and a caller supplying one supplies an assertion. Verified against prepare_identity in src/skdispatch.rs: when DispatcherProfile.discovery is None it requires the caller's dispatcher_vnd and partition_id and discovers neither; the vmwp PID is always resolved from the VM id and CR3 always comes from the register provider. The same overclaim was in the 0.23.0 CHANGELOG entry for open_sk_kd (the openers share that path) and twice in the shipped skill, so all four sentences now split the two always-optional fields from the two that are optional only with a discovery section. Match the #[serde(default)] attributes.
The pattern matches #[default], but src/server.rs uses #[serde(default)]. If this attribute changes without a corresponding Defaults to comment change, the check will not report that default change.
The supplied src/server.rs declaration at Lines 1207–1218 confirms this attribute form.

…at serde(default) is not CodeRabbit (minor, docs/releasing.md:79): the third command matched `#[default]` in src/server.rs, where the attribute never appears (0 lines; measured), so that half of the pattern was dead. The fact is taken; the proposed remedy - add `#[serde(default)]` to the pattern - is not: that attribute marks a field optional, and on v0.22.0..main it matches seventeen lines, none of them a default value that moved. The command now reads all of src with -A1, which prints the variant the attribute leaves and the one it lands on (Redirect -> Natural on this range), and the doc-comment grep over server.rs is a fourth command of its own. Three documentation corrections from the read that cut 0.23.0, none of which belonged in the release commit.
README.mdsaid seventy-six tools where its own table,docs/tool-surface.mdand the golden say seventy-eight. The count was right on 2026-10-09, when thesecurekernelgroup became an extra, and thepool_tracepair landed after it without moving it.docs/sessions.mdstill said the live-control caller supplies thevmwpPID and dispatcher address, and presented the standalone--sk-kd-targetrole as the WinDbg route whenopen_sk_kdis the one that is a session.docs/releasing.mdgains the step this release had to improvise: four user-visible changes sincev0.22.0had no CHANGELOG entry (open_sk_kd, the opt-in group, the startup policy, the arm-mode default), three of them in commits whose message was one line. Four one-line diffs find them — the golden tool names against the last tag,DONE.md's new headings, an enum#[default]moving acrosssrc, and theDefaults todoc comments insrc/server.rs— each run againstv0.22.0..mainbefore being written down.Review
Round 1, one finding, taken. Codex (P2) read the new
sessions.mdsentence as saying the worker discovers the dispatcher address and partition ID for every profile. Verified againstprepare_identityinsrc/skdispatch.rs: with nodiscoverysection in the profile it requires the caller'sdispatcher_vndandpartition_idand discovers neither, while thevmwpPID is always resolved from the VM id and CR3 always comes from the register provider. The openers share that path, so the same overclaim was in the released 0.23.0 CHANGELOG entry foropen_sk_kdand in two sentences of the shipped skill; all four now split the two always-optional fields from the two that are optional only with adiscoverysection (2e9b647). The GitHub release body for v0.23.0 was generated from the section before this fix and still carries the old sentence.Round 2, one finding: fact taken, remedy declined. CodeRabbit (minor) noted the defaults command matched
#[default]insrc/server.rs, where the attribute never appears — measured, 0 lines — so that half of the pattern was dead. Its proposed pattern adds#[serde(default)], which marks a field optional: onv0.22.0..mainit matches seventeen lines and none is a value that moved. The command now reads all ofsrcwith-A1, which prints the variant the attribute leaves and the one it lands on (Redirect→Naturalon this range), and the doc-comment grep is a fourth command of its own (e5763b2).No Rust changes.
