File item 130: a transcript cannot be joined to the client's OpenTelemetry trace - #500
Conversation
…metry trace Claude Code's traces beta sends `traceparent` on HTTP MCP requests, and SEP-414 puts the same context in `params._meta`; this server reads neither, so a transcript record lines up with the client's span only by wall clock. The item proposes a field on `tool_request` and an offline `--render-otlp` beside `--render-cast`, records why a live exporter is not proposed (no spans in the tree, the crash property, egress of debugger output, both builds), and says to measure that the header actually arrives before building anything. Preserve both MCP and HTTP trace contexts
For a Streamable HTTP request that contains both SEP-414 _meta context and an HTTP traceparent, collapsing the two into one optional field loses information or can select the transport span as the server span's parent. The OpenTelemetry MCP conventions treat these contexts as independent: _meta supplies the remote parent, while the HTTP context should be retained as a span link. Record both contexts and define that precedence explicitly rather than reading either into the same field. See the OpenTelemetry MCP context-propagation guidance.

Avoid assigning tool spans two incompatible parents
When one debug session is used across multiple Claude prompts, its calls belong to different client trace IDs, so they cannot all be children of one session span while context-bearing calls are also children of their respective client spans. OpenTelemetry permits each span only zero or one parent, and a parent/child pair must occupy the same trace. Render each context-bearing call in its incoming trace and represent session membership with attributes or links, rather than the stated session-child hierarchy. See the OpenTelemetry tracing API.

…t apart Three findings, all on piece 1 and 2 of item 130's close, all taken. - The `_meta` context and the HTTP `traceparent` were to be read into one field. The OpenTelemetry MCP conventions (Development) treat them as independent and make the `_meta` one the server span's parent with the transport's as a link, so they are now two fields, and the item quotes the convention it follows. - A tool call was to be both its session's child and the client span's child. A span has one parent in one trace, and a session outlives a prompt, so its calls can span several client traces: a call now takes the `_meta` context as its parent where it has one and its session's span where it does not, names its session as an attribute, and links to the session span and to any header context. - The closing run said the server's spans would sit "under" the client's. Claude Code documents only the header, which by the same convention is a link, so the criterion now says the rendered file reaches the client's span and says why that is a link. CodeRabbit's attached LanguageTool note on "each tool call a child" is moot: that sentence was rewritten for the parent rule. Preserve trace flags with each inbound context
When a client sends a sampled context such as a traceparent ending in -01, this proposed record keeps the trace ID and parent span ID but discards the header's trace-flags component. The OTLP renderer therefore cannot preserve the sampled flag on the generated span or transport link, and sampling-aware consumers may treat the reconstructed context as unsampled even though the client's trace was sampled. Record the trace-flags byte alongside both parsed contexts.

…included Codex: the record listed trace id, parent span id and `tracestate`, and so dropped the `traceparent` trace flags, whose sampled bit the rendered span and link have to carry. Taken, but as the whole validated `traceparent` value rather than a fourth part on the list: the list is what missed the flags, and a value kept whole cannot leave a component out. CodeRabbit was rate limited on the previous head. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01534uQsMPvQvBsJ8anYrx97

FOLLOWUPS.mdentry, its index line, and its line under Where these items came from. The gap. Claude Code's traces beta (
CLAUDE_CODE_ENABLE_TELEMETRY=1+CLAUDE_CODE_ENHANCED_TELEMETRY_BETA=1) sendstraceparenton outbound HTTP MCP requests, and SEP-414 (Final) carries the same W3C context inparams._meta. This server reads neither one, so the only way to match a transcript record to the client's span for the same call is by wall clock. What the item proposes:
tool_request: the_metaone and the listener's HTTP header, kept apart, because the OpenTelemetry MCP conventions make the first the server span's parent and the second a link. No new dependency, nothing sent anywhere.windbg-mcp --render-otlp <transcript.jsonl>beside--render-cast, producing an OTLP/JSON file with metadata only by default. What it does not propose, and why: a live OTLP exporter.
tracingspans, so there is nothing span-shaped to export.write_all-per-record crash property. Why it is deferred. The payoff only exists under
