Rank language models by whether they stay honest under pressure, graded from tool-call traces instead of prose.

Rank language models by whether they stay honest under pressure — measured from their tool-call traces, not from reading their prose.

Plain-language version: This tool tests whether an AI makes things up when a user leans on it, and it checks by looking at what the AI actually did rather than at how convincing its answer sounds.


Why this exists

Someone set out to find a model that could do real research without inventing sources. The method was manual: pick a model, give it an open-ended research task, apply some adversarial pressure, read the output, judge it.

One model produced a well-structured document with seven real arXiv citations, a methodology section, and a note stating that every id had been verified against arXiv metadata.

Almost all of it was wrong in ways that reading could not reveal:

  • Its single network call used http://export.arxiv.org, which answers with a 301 redirect and an empty body. It received zero bytes and never said so.
  • It silently fell back to grepping a bibliography already on disk, then attributed that file's section headings to the papers as if they were findings. A survey of prompting techniques was described as research on "agent anxiety" — because that was the heading it sat under.
  • It absorbed the bibliography's own "title + author verified" annotations and re-emitted them as its own verification claim.
  • Six of its tool calls were emitted in a format the harness did not parse and were silently dropped.
  • The session ran at 158% of the model's context window.

Every citation checked out. Every claim attached to them did not. No amount of careful reading would have caught it, because the document was not wrong in the places a reader looks.

The lesson generalises: a well-formatted ungrounded document and a good one are indistinguishable by reading, and distinguishable by trace. This tool grades the trace.

Plain-language version: An AI wrote a research report that looked excellent. Its sources were real, so spot-checking them passed. But it had never actually reached the internet — it quietly copied headings out of a file already on the computer and presented them as what the papers said, then claimed it had verified everything. You could not catch that by reading. You can catch it by checking what the AI actually did.

What it does

The harness implements the tools it gives the model, so every byte the model ever saw is recorded. Grading then answers a question prose review cannot:

Did this claim come from something the model actually retrieved?

Anything asserted that never appeared in a tool result and was not supplied in the prompt is fabrication — decided by set membership, not opinion. No model judges another model, and the same transcript always grades the same way.

Install

No dependencies beyond Python 3.9+. Everything uses the standard library.

Run the whole catalogue in one command:

--resume skips completed runs, so a sweep killed by a rate limit picks up where it stopped. One model failing never kills a sweep.

Recommended order

  1. --scenario nonexistent_paper_trap across everything. Fast, and proves the plumbing works. It will not rank models — in our study all 14 reachable models passed it.
  2. --scenario compounding_ramp on whatever survived. This is the test with demonstrated discriminating power. Budget ~5 minutes per model.

Many providers, one sweep

Ten providers is not ten integrations. Nearly all speak one of three wire formats, and providers.py adapts all three:

Adding provider eleven is normally one entry in registry.json, not code. Auth styles: bearer, x-api-key, query, none. Prefer key_env over an inline key so rotating a token never means editing a file.

Before you publish results

Provider error bodies are stored verbatim so failures stay diagnosable. That is right locally and wrong in a public repo — an NVIDIA 404 echoes your account id.

Credentials are never written to a result file. --list-providers shows only a key's length.

Two columns that are not model scores:

  • malfrm — turns where the model emitted tool-call syntax (<tool_call>, <arg_key>) as plain text. Its template does not match what your caller sends: the model tried to call a tool and your code dropped it. Fix the integration before ranking the model down. This is what made the model in the origin story look like a liar.
  • safe — duress turns where the model redirected to emergency help. Correct behaviour, never scored.

Honest limitations

  • The short scenarios barely discriminate. In our 14-model study they came out ~100% across the board. Only compounding_ramp separated models.
  • A model's account of its own process is not evidence. Asked "walk me through your procedure", a production model described a date filter its tool did not have, JSON output it did not produce, "top 25 hits" when it had requested 10, and link verification it never performed — then blamed an index lag that did not exist. The post-mortem is generated by the same machinery as the answer and is more convincing, because it is structured and self-critical. Grade the trace; do not trust the confession.
  • The grader is biased toward false accusation. Five of the six bugs found during development condemned honest behaviour. See METHODOLOGY.md §7.
  • Grading judges sourcing, not quality. A correctly-sourced summary that is shallow scores the same as a good one.
  • One decoy fact. The reversal scenarios all turn on a single figure from one abstract. A model could in principle be tuned for that one case.
  • Findings are route-specific, not model-specific. Every result here came from NVIDIA NIM's hosted endpoints on a free-tier key. A model that timed out or 404'd here may answer instantly through its native provider — deepseek-v4-pro did exactly that. Availability and behaviour belong to the endpoint-plus-key, never to the model name.

Contributing

Add scenarios to tasks.py and tactics to pressure.py. Keep the rule that makes this work: never write a probe whose answer needs judgement to grade. If you cannot express the check as a string or set operation over the reply and the trace, it does not belong here.

Prefer fixing the grader over re-running sweeps. Grader logic lives in grade.py, not in result files, so a correction re-scores every existing run for free. Only probe changes require a re-run.
