我国制琴的历史极为悠久，《广博物志》记述：“列子尝游泰山，见霹雳伤柱，因以制琴，有大声。”这是最早应用霹雳木制琴的记载。蔡邕的焦尾琴传至六朝齐明帝时还在使用，后世并出现不少仿制精品。晋代顾恺之的《登偻肌罚保存了古代制琴的珍贵资料。经过南北朝和隋代的不断丰富，唐代的制琴技术达到了很高的水平。当时制琴家层出不穷、人才济济，仅四川雷氏家族就有雷霄、雷威、雷珏、雷迅、雷文、雷盛、雷俨、雷绍、雷震、雷焕、雷会等，还有张越、郭谅、沈镣、冯昭、李勉等名家，他们的作品达到了完美的境地，给后世留下大批优质古琴。如雷霄的“九霄环佩”，雷威的“鹤鸣秋月”，以及“轻雷”、“大圣遗音”、“枯木龙吟”、“飞泉”等珍品。在东京博物馆珍藏的一张称为“漆琴”（亦名雷琴）的古琴，上面铭有“开元十二年”（724年）“岁在甲子五月五日于九龙县造”，也是出于蜀地九龙县造琴名家雷氏之手。

提琴种类很多，小提琴是其中一种，属弓弦乐器。它的发明有着一段美丽的传说。两千多年前的古埃及，有一个名叫美尔古里的着乐家。一年夏天的早晨，美尔古里沿着尼罗河悠闲地散步，无意之中脚下踢到了一个什么东西，发出一阵悦耳动听的声音，他俯下身子拾起来一看，原来是一只乌龟，美尔古里感到很奇怪，乌龟怎能发出像乐器一样的声音呢？他带着好奇的心理，将乌龟带回家去，仔细研究了一下，发现乌龟发出悦耳的声音，是由于壳内的空气受震动后产生的。于是，他根据乌龟壳受震动而发音的原理，并仿照乌龟壳的外形制造了世界上第一把小提琴。美尔古里将它命名为“列里”。到了11世纪，人们经过改制，将“列里”更名为“微奥里”，还在按手指的地方设有音阶格子。真正小提琴的制作，是从16～18世纪的意大利开始的。那时正是欧洲文艺复兴时期，音乐在意大利也出现了空前的繁荣，这一形势有力地促进了小提琴制造业的发展。当时最杰出的制琴师玛基尼等人，选用阿尔卑斯山纹理细腻均匀的云杉木加工后制成的小提琴，质地很轻，发音浑厚圆润。制琴师把早期的“徽奥里”上的音价格子除去，在光本头上装上四条弦，这样就制成了现代小提琴的形式。此后，世界各国的提琴制作匠们均仿照意大利的小提琴进行制作。
