Dependabot auto-merges enabled with GITHUB_TOKEN suppress the push-triggered Check on the merge SHA (as on #520 and #522). Instead, when a PR's Check succeeds, look up the live PR by the checked head SHA (workflow_run.pull_requests can be empty), require an open same-repository Dependabot PR, and squash-merge via the existing release-tagger app's contents:write token. The expected head SHA and branch protection gate the REST merge; the app push triggers main Check. The release tagger remains gated on a successful push Check. No new app or workflow permissions.
Validation:
python3 -I .github/scripts/dependabot-auto-merge.test.py(5 tests),actionlint .github/workflows/dependabot-auto-merge.yml,git diff --cached --checkpassed. After merging, verify the next qualifying Dependabot PR Check/Required and exact merge-SHA main Check/Required before reassessing release readiness.
