An agent writing a Hypercolor effect could change the code but could not see the result or the errors. The canvas streamed only over the binary WebSocket, and script errors from Servo reached only the daemon log, with line numbers that pointed at the engine's runtime copy of the page rather than the file the agent wrote. This PR closes that loop over MCP, REST, and the CLI: capture the composed canvas as an image, read effect console output with locations in the author's own file, and install or hot swap a page without filesystem access. A new shipped skill, effect-livecoding, teaches the loop.

💡 What this changes

Need MCP tool REST CLI
See what is rendering capture_canvas (image content blocks, bursts of up to 8 frames) GET /api/v1/canvas/frame hypercolor effects capture
Read script output and errors get_effect_console GET /api/v1/effects/console hypercolor effects console
Install or hot swap a page install_effect POST /api/v1/effects/install, which now also returns console_after hypercolor effects install [--activate]

The MCP server grows from 18 to 21 tools, and its instructions now describe the loop for clients that never load a skill. The shipped effect-livecoding skill (with a starter page) covers the loop, the page contract, and LED design rules; hypercolor-control lists the new tools and subcommands and hands authoring to it. The tools reference, agent workflows, REST and CLI references, and the wire matrix document the new surfaces. MCP counts across the docs now say 21 tools, 5 resources, and 4 prompts; before this branch, some pages said 18 tools and 4 prompts and others said 17 and 3.

🛠️ How it works

Canvas capture. The canvas lane only publishes while something subscribes, so a capture registers its own full-resolution demand, waits up to 1.5 seconds for a frame rendered after the request, encodes it as JPEG or PNG off the async runtime, and drops the demand when it finishes. A capture never upscales. When nothing renders during the wait it returns the last published frame and marks it fresh: false, and a burst stops there. MCP tool results can now carry images beside the structured payload; execute_tool_with_state still returns only the payload, so existing callers are untouched.

Effect console. A bounded, process-wide journal in hypercolor-core keeps the latest 512 console messages from effect pages, with sequence cursors (after, next_seq, and truncated when a reader fell behind). The Servo delegate records each message tagged with the effect name and the author's source path; arbitrary web viewport pages stay out. Effect pages load from a runtime copy with an injected preamble, so the preamble injection now reports where it spliced its lines, and every location in a message that names the effect's own page is rewritten to the author's file and line. Servo prints those locations in three shapes, all observed live: file:///copy.html:12:5, the page's base directory with a :12:5 suffix, and the base directory followed by , 12.

Install and hot swap. REST uploads and install_effect share one install path. Reinstalling under the same file name keeps the effect id, which derives from the path, so a layer already running the effect reloads the new page on its next frame without another set_effect. Every install returns a console cursor taken before the page loads, so the caller can read exactly what the new version printed.

🧪 Verification

  • Added or updated tests
  • Added or updated docs (README, AGENTS.md, relevant spec, or guide)
  • just verify passes locally (Rust fmt + lint + test): not run as one command, because the daemon's GPU tests deadlock under the parallel runner on this machine (CI serializes them). The relevant gates ran per crate instead; see the table below.
  • just deny passes (required for dependency or license changes): no dependency changes
  • just ui-test and just ui-build pass (required for crates/hypercolor-ui/): not touched
  • just sdk-lint, just sdk-check, and just sdk-build pass (required for sdk/): not touched
  • just python-verify passes (required for python/): 149 passed against the regenerated client
  • just compat-check passes (required for data/drivers/vendors/*.toml): not touched
  • just docs-build passes (required for docs or README changes): 97 pages
  • cd docs && zola check passes (required for docs link/content changes)
  • Packaging scripts were syntax-checked (required for scripts/ or packaging/): not touched
  • just e2e-build passes with the normal Servo stack: not run; the live Servo check below covers the effect path
  • just e2e-build-cpu passes when validating the CPU smoke fallback: not run
  • just e2e passes against the Servo stack: not run
  • Tested on real hardware, simulator, or e2e harness (describe below): a live Servo daemon, without hardware drivers, in an isolated network namespace

./scripts/check-retired-api-docs.sh pass

The live run installed probe pages through the CLI and over MCP JSON-RPC against a Servo daemon built with --no-default-features --features servo:

Scenario Observed
A page that warns, then calls an undefined function on frame 30 Console returned the warning and ReferenceError at author line 19; Servo had reported line 32 against the base directory
console.log(new Error().stack) across three frames All three locations mapped to author lines 9, 10, and 11
Log text href file:///…/trace.html, fps 60 Recorded unchanged, with no line
Reinstall under the same file name, no re-apply The running layer switched from magenta to green; the console showed one page load per install
effects patch --param hue=120 Applied to the running page without a reload
Editing the installed file in place The file watcher reloaded it
MCP tools/list, capture_canvas, install_effect with an invalid page 21 tools; two JPEG image blocks; one error listing all three validation problems

An independent verifier reviewed the branch adversarially. Its first pass found that stack traces kept runtime line numbers after the first frame, that log text with a comma and a number could be rewritten as a location, and that install_effect was wrongly annotated idempotent. Those are fixed in ca731a94f and 5b687e93f. The verifier also confirmed the journal cursor math against a reference model over 3,000 random cursor walks, install path traversal safety, and that a dropped capture releases its demand. On re-check it passed the branch, including a 200,000-case fuzz of the new remap and a line-ending round trip. Its one remaining reproducible case, a lone carriage return right before the first script tag in a page with no head element, is fixed in c3f30684d.

🔍 Notes for reviewers

Start with remap_console_message in crates/hypercolor-core/src/effect/servo/worker/console.rs. It rewrites Servo's message text, and its , line parser is strict on purpose: only a closing quote, a comma, and spaces may separate the location from the digits, and the digits must end the message or close a bracket. The cursor math in EffectConsoleJournal::read in crates/hypercolor-core/src/effect/console.rs is the other place where an off-by-one would hide output.

Three limits are accepted rather than fixed here. Prose that ends in a comma and a number right after the page's own URL (file:///…/fx.html, 60) is still read as a location, because it is indistinguishable from the shape Servo prints for inline script failures. Console messages on the read-tier console route can include absolute file:// paths, which matches GET /system already exposing the data directory at that tier. Console cursors carry no daemon-run epoch, so a cursor from before a restart that falls at or below the new run's latest sequence can skip messages without reporting truncated.

The CLI builds its multipart upload by hand rather than enabling reqwest's multipart feature, which would rebuild every crate that depends on reqwest.

🔁 Review delta

After the first CI run and CodeRabbit's review: 82bf8585c updates a source-text pin that the shared install path moved (the one daemon CI failure); 112297fbf makes a burst count a frame published during its interval sleep as fresh; 9a40f8259 declares both image/jpeg and image/png for the canvas route in OpenAPI and removes a leftover docs line calling install_effect idempotent.

hyperb1iss and others added 11 commits October 12, 2026 16:57
Agents that write or tune effects had no way to see what they made: the
canvas only streamed over the binary WebSocket. A capture now registers
its own full-resolution canvas demand, waits for a frame rendered after
the request, encodes it as JPEG or PNG, and drops the demand when done,
so it costs nothing when nobody is looking.

GET /api/v1/canvas/frame returns one still with frame headers, and the
new capture_canvas MCP tool returns one image content block per frame
for short bursts that show motion. MCP tool results can now carry
images beside the structured payload; payload-only callers keep using
execute_tool_with_state unchanged. A frame flagged not fresh is the last
one published before rendering went quiet.

Effect pages run inside Servo, so console.log output and uncaught script
errors reached only the daemon log, and their locations pointed at the
runtime copy with the injected preamble rather than the file the author
wrote. Livecoding an effect without seeing its errors is guesswork.

The Servo delegate now records each console message from an effect page
into a bounded, process-wide journal with sequence cursors, tagged with
the effect name and the author's source path. Preamble injection reports
where it spliced its lines, so locations in both shapes Servo prints
(file:///page.html:12:5 and an inline script's base directory followed
by a line) are rewritten to the author's file and line before they are
recorded. Arbitrary web viewport pages stay out of the journal.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The console journal had no reader outside the process. GET
/api/v1/effects/console returns a cursor window over it, narrowed by
effect id or name and by a severity floor, with each message mapped to
its catalog id and source file name. The new get_effect_console MCP tool
returns the same shape.

install_effect lets an MCP-only agent livecode without filesystem
access: it validates a full page, installs it into the user effects
directory, and reports every validation problem at once. Reinstalling
under the same file name keeps the effect id, so a layer already running
it reloads with the new code. The result carries a console cursor taken
before the page loads, so the agent can read exactly what the new page
printed. The REST upload and the tool share one install path.

The console response is a cursor window rather than a ListResponse; the
wire matrix, AGENTS.md, and a wire contract test now say so.

…g loop

Agents in a shell (and people) had no CLI path to see the canvas, read
an effect's script errors, or install a page without the Bun authoring
CLI. Three effects subcommands close that loop against the daemon:

install uploads one HTML file, optionally applies it, and prints the
console cursor taken before the install. console reads the effect
console after a cursor with effect and severity filters and prints the
next cursor. capture saves the composed canvas as PNG or JPEG, one file
per frame for a short burst, and stops a burst once nothing renders.

The install route now returns that console cursor too. The client
builds its multipart upload by hand so the workspace reqwest dependency
does not grow a feature every crate would then compile. The CLI
reference also loses a stale effects layout subcommand and gains pause
and resume, which the tree had dropped.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
MCP clients that never load a skill still read the server instructions
and tool descriptions, so both now carry the loop: install the page,
apply it once, then read the console from console_after and capture the
canvas on every iteration, reinstalling under the same file name to hot
swap. The install_effect description also names the exact render
surface id and the two mistakes a live run caught: a fixed-size canvas
that fills only a corner of the frame, and control values cached at
load time instead of read every frame.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The shipped effect-livecoding skill teaches the loop an agent runs while
writing an effect against a live daemon: install, apply once, read the
console from the install's cursor, capture the canvas, patch controls
live, and reinstall under the same file name to hot swap. Every claim
in it was checked against a running daemon, including the page contract
details that bite (canvas sized from the window, controls read every
frame, on<name>Changed errors swallowed, a burst that freezes after an
uncaught error). It ships a starter page that follows those rules.

hypercolor-control now lists all twenty-one tools and the twelve
effects subcommands and hands authoring work to the new skill, and
rgb-effect-design measures its checklist on captured pixels.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The tools reference gains an effect authoring section for install_effect,
get_effect_console, and capture_canvas, with real outputs from a live
run, and the agent workflows gain a write-an-effect-live playbook over
MCP with its CLI equivalent. Counts across the site, AGENTS.md, the
roadmap, the architecture notes, and the daemon README now say 21 tools,
5 resources, and 4 prompts; several still said 17 tools and 3 prompts.

Two stale claims go with them: the tools reference called the typed
output schemas a placeholder, though every result is validated against
them, and two pages told readers to rescan after an upload that already
registers the effect.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The console remap rewrote only the first file:// location in a message,
so a stack trace from console.log(e.stack) or console.trace kept the
runtime copy's line numbers on every frame after the first, and a frame
naming the runtime copy came out with the author's path but the copy's
line. Every location naming the effect's own page is now rewritten.

The ", line" form Servo uses for inline script failures is now parsed
strictly: only a closing quote, a comma, and spaces may separate it from
the token, and the digits must end the message or close a bracket. The
old parser took the first number after any later comma, so log text
such as "href file:///fx/a.html, fps 60" lost ten from its fps.

Preamble line counting also treats a lone carriage return as a line
break, as the HTML tokenizer does.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
An effect filter on the console now matches only output from that
effect's own source file. Falling back to the display name mixed in
output from any copy that kept the same title. install_effect is no
longer annotated idempotent: each call restarts the running page and
returns a new console cursor, so a client must not retry it blindly.

The capture comment now describes what an oversized side does, the
OpenAPI summary names the PNG option, the REST reference describes when
the canvas route answers 503, and the livecoding skill states the
render surface rule and the full control type list precisely.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The OpenAPI summary for GET /api/v1/canvas/frame now names the PNG
option, and the generated client carries summaries into its docstrings,
so the vendored client is regenerated to keep the generation check
green.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
In a page with no head element, the preamble lands before the first
script tag. When the author's line before it ended in a lone carriage
return, the injected newline fused with it into one CRLF break, so the
line shift counted one line too many and every later console location
was off by one. The shift now drops the leading break in that case.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c3f30

The remaining issues are localized to authoring guidance, API documentation, a burst-capture edge case, and console-polling cost. The PR is mergeable with owner awareness and follow-up fixes.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c3f30

The new authoring interfaces preserve existing access checks and installation safeguards. No introduced authorization bypass was established in the inspected paths. Actual deployment exposure and some interruption behavior remain unconfirmed.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected authority scope is daemon-wide: admitted installation callers can replace same-name user effects, including effects already referenced by scenes. Inspection exposes the composed canvas and retained effect diagnostics. Optional effect filters narrow results but do not implement tenant or per-effect authorization.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — For authenticated remote requests, console and canvas GETs require read tier and MCP POST calls require control tier, including calls to read-only tools. Existing loopback trust and configured keyless network admission are separate branches. Cross-site keyless mutations are blocked. The PR does not change this enforcement.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Capture validates burst and dimension parameters before registering demand, waits at most 1.5 seconds for each fresh frame, and stops after a stale fallback. Each receiver owns a uniquely identified demand registration; dropping the capture future removes that registration without removing other subscribers. Encoding already started on a blocking worker is not cancelled by dropping the awaiting future.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Agent consumers should treat effect diagnostics and rendered images as untrusted effect-controlled content, not as instructions granting additional tool authority. This is a boundary-hardening proposal, not an observed authority-escalation finding.

62-62: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Every console read resolves every catalog HTML path.

html_sources calls resolve_html_source_path for every HTML effect on each read. Agents poll this endpoint often. If the resolver touches the filesystem (for example, through canonicalize), each poll performs O(catalog) filesystem I/O. Compute the catalog only when read.effect is set or when the page has entries.

♻️ Skip resolution when it is unused

Move the html_sources call after journal.read. Use it in the filter only when the target is Effect. The read can also be done under one lock with a lazily built catalog.

The registry identity surface test pins the install route's call into
install_registry_file by its source text. The REST upload and the MCP
tool now share install_html_effect, which passes the page as a &str
parameter, so the pinned spelling moves from &html to html. The pin
still asserts what it guards: the install route registers effects
through the effect domain's identity authority.

A capture marked every published frame as seen before each wait. In a
burst, a frame the renderer published during the interval sleep was
therefore treated as old: the wait timed out if the renderer then went
quiet, and the burst returned that frame flagged stale and stopped
early, even though it was rendered after the capture began. The
capture now marks frames seen once, when it starts, so fresh means
published after the capture began.

GET /api/v1/canvas/frame answers image/png when asked for format=png,
but OperationDoc held a single binary media type, so the document
listed only image/jpeg. Binary responses now take a list of media
types, and the canvas route declares both. The tools reference also
drops a leftover line that called install_effect idempotent.
