What changed and why

aerie-launcher.sh kept its pid and log at /tmp/aerie.pid and /tmp/aerie.log. That is a predictable name in a world-writable directory. Another local user could pre-create or symlink the pid file and so choose which PID --stop kills (CWE-377 class). launch-scaffolder#63 records that this path is no longer standard-compliant.

The launcher is now realigned from its config, the same way as the sibling launchers (game-server-admin, nqc, panll). This PR has two commits; the second one supersedes the first:

  1. af81a74: a hand-fix of the two path lines. It is fully replaced by commit 2.
  2. b19446f, following the owner's ruling "realign like siblings":
    • It deletes the two /tmp overrides from aerie.launcher.a2ml (pid-file = "/tmp/aerie.pid", log-file = "/tmp/aerie.log"), so the generator's default applies.
    • It then regenerates aerie-launcher.sh with launch-scaffolder realign, built from launch-scaffolder origin/main 2cb0f24 with --standard standards/launcher-standard_praxis.deed.

The regenerated paths:

PID_FILE="${XDG_RUNTIME_DIR:-${XDG_STATE_HOME:-$HOME/.local/state}}/launch-scaffolder/aerie/server.pid"
LOG_FILE="${XDG_STATE_HOME:-$HOME/.local/state}/launch-scaffolder/aerie/server.log"

The earlier caveat is resolved. The config no longer carries /tmp overrides, so a later realign walk reproduces this file instead of writing /tmp back over it.

Realign ran inside an unshare -rm namespace with the worktree bind-mounted at the config's [repo].path. That way the baked CONFIG_FILE is the canonical /var/mnt/eclipse/repos/aerie/aerie.launcher.a2ml, not a scratch path.

Scope of the generator diff. Everything beyond the two paths is the generator's current canonical output:

  • the metadata block moves to @launcher-deed (standard-version 0.4.0);
  • ensure_state_dirs creates the state directories 0700 and refuses a non-private directory;
  • the PID is validated before kill;
  • desktop-integration files are written atomically;
  • the output is shellcheck-clean.

A known generator quirk also shows up: a duplicated SPDX header line. That quirk is the same in the sibling PRs.

Verification

  • bash -n aerie-launcher.sh: OK.
  • shellcheck: 0 findings, down from 3 on main.
  • grep -nE "[\"'/]tmp/" aerie-launcher.sh: 0 hits (was 2). git grep /tmp/aerie: 0 hits repo-wide.
  • Smoke run on a copy that differs from the committed file only in START_COMMAND=('sleep' '300'). The real command is under /home/hyper/..., which is absent on the test host.
    • With XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/XDG_STATE_HOME set:
      • --start wrote $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/launch-scaffolder/aerie/server.pid. Both the pid and log directories were 0700.
      • --status reported Running.
      • --stop killed exactly that PID and removed the pid file.
    • With the XDG vars unset and HOME set to a path containing a space, with an unrelated sleep 300 decoy running:
      • the pid landed at $HOME/.local/state/launch-scaffolder/aerie/server.pid (directory 0700);
      • --stop killed the launcher's PID and left the decoy alive;
      • the pid file was removed.

Inherited red checks

The one failing check is not caused by this change:

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

https://claude.ai/code/session_0136eszqrQ53Kj7aBH1D4rXK

aerie-launcher.sh kept its pid and log at /tmp/aerie.pid and
/tmp/aerie.log: a predictable name in a world-writable directory, so
another local user could pre-create or symlink the pid file and choose
which PID `--stop` kills (CWE-377).

Hand-fix, matching launch-scaffolder main's generator output
(standards/launcher-standard_praxis.deed):

  PID  ${XDG_RUNTIME_DIR:-${XDG_STATE_HOME:-$HOME/.local/state}}/launch-scaffolder/aerie/server.pid
  LOG  ${XDG_STATE_HOME:-$HOME/.local/state}/launch-scaffolder/aerie/server.log

start_server now creates both parent directories and sets them 0700
before the first write, and the desktop entry's tail commands quote
the log path (%q), which can now contain spaces via $HOME.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a --version option that displays the app version, build identifier and platform.
    • --browser and --web now work as aliases for --auto.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Launcher state files are stored in private, per-user locations, with checks to prevent unsafe directory use and invalid process identifiers.
    • System integration now protects unmarked files from being overwritten or removed, and uses safer file updates.
    • Improved escaping for desktop entries and clearer reporting of integrity-hash generation.

Walkthrough

The launcher now uses per-user state paths and validates PID values before process checks or signalling. System integration uses ownership markers, escaped desktop entries, and atomic file operations. The command-line interface adds version output and starts the process for --browser and --web.

Changes

Launcher behaviour

Layer / File(s) Summary
Launcher metadata and runtime defaults
aerie-launcher.sh, aerie.launcher.a2ml
The launcher adds deed metadata and version configuration, switches PID and log defaults to per-user state paths, and removes the /tmp paths from the runtime configuration.
PID validation and process lifecycle
aerie-launcher.sh
Startup, running-process checks, and stop operations validate PID values and check state-directory safety before using PID files.
Integration ownership and safe-write helpers
aerie-launcher.sh
The launcher detects integration targets, validates ownership markers, and adds atomic-write and desktop-entry escaping helpers.
Integration generation and removal
aerie-launcher.sh
Integration files are generated with escaped values and atomic installation. Install and removal reject unmarked files; removal uses rm -f.
Version and browser options
aerie-launcher.sh
Help documents --version, --browser, and --web. The browser options start the process, and --version prints version, build SHA, and platform details.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b1944

Existing installations cannot be reinstalled or removed through the shell fallback, even with --force. Add a safe legacy migration path before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b1944

Private process state and safer file replacement reduce local security exposure. However, the new ownership checks can prevent older installations from receiving those protections or being removed, and state migration can leave previously started processes outside normal cleanup. The demonstrated scope is the caller’s local installation.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new marker gate rejects desktop files and icons produced by the base launcher before both shell reinstall and removal, even with --force. Consequently, an existing installed launcher can remain on the old shared-/tmp implementation because its normal replacement path is blocked. This newly obstructs remediation of the pre-existing exposure; it does not introduce that exposure. External provisioning recovery is unknown.
  • Low · reliability · inferred: Shell installation publishes the icon before publishing its ownership marker. Failure or interruption between those operations leaves an installed icon that fails managed-install validation, blocking subsequent reinstall and file removal. Per-file atomic replacement and temporary-file cleanup do not restore the icon/marker pair, weakening ownership recovery and secure cleanup.
  • Low · reliability · inferred: If a process started by the base launcher remains alive during upgrade, head status, start, stop, and pre-disintegration stopping consult only the new PID path. They cannot identify that process through its legacy record; startup can create another instance and removal can leave the earlier process running. The lifecycle transition lacks a safe handoff, although blindly trusting the old /tmp PID would also be unsafe.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated authority is local to the invoking user: process execution and signalling use caller permissions, and normal integration targets are per-user files. Exploiting the old shared-state behavior required local filesystem influence; no new remote input, privilege elevation, or cross-tenant authority is established by the inspected change.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The PR-relevant security concern is blocked replacement of legacy shell installations. Their old PID-file-to-kill path predates this change, but the new marker gate prevents the normal forced reinstall from replacing that launcher with the hardened version. This conclusion is conditional on using the shell fallback and retaining the old installed copy.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The shell path places PID operations behind directory ownership/permission checks and numeric validation, and integration replacement/removal behind generator-marker checks. These markers express management provenance, not authenticated filesystem ownership. Validation covers immediate state parents; protection against replaceable ancestors is not established.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — PID records remain bare process numbers, without process-start identity binding or lifecycle serialization. Concurrent starts can compete for one record, and stop removes the record without confirming process exit. These limitations already existed in the base; private state reduces cross-user influence but does not resolve those inherited lifecycle guarantees.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Provide a bounded legacy transition that verifies prior generated integration provenance before adoption and establishes a safe pre-upgrade stop or identity-verified process handoff. Do not restore arbitrary trust in the shared /tmp PID record or make --force bypass ownership validation.
  • proposed — Make integration ownership recoverable across interruption, for example with a transaction record that identifies this installation’s published targets and supports safe rollback or resumption. Recovery should distinguish an incomplete managed icon from an unrelated unmarked file.

…hand-fix

The previous commit on this branch hand-edited aerie-launcher.sh onto the
XDG pid/log ladder. The /tmp paths originated in explicit pid-file and
log-file overrides in aerie.launcher.a2ml, which is still present on
main, so a later realign would have regenerated /tmp over the hand-fix.

Per the owner's ruling ("realign like siblings"), this commit deletes
those two override lines so the generator's default applies, then
regenerates the launcher with `launch-scaffolder realign`, built from
launch-scaffolder origin/main 2cb0f24 with
--standard standards/launcher-standard_praxis.deed:

  PID  ${XDG_RUNTIME_DIR:-${XDG_STATE_HOME:-$HOME/.local/state}}/launch-scaffolder/aerie/server.pid
  LOG  ${XDG_STATE_HOME:-$HOME/.local/state}/launch-scaffolder/aerie/server.log

These are the same paths the hand-fix used, so a pid file written by
either version is found by the other.

The rest of the launcher diff is the generator's current canonical
output. The metadata block moves to @launcher-deed (standard-version
0.4.0). The generator also adds ensure_state_dirs with a private-dir
check, PID validation before kill, and atomic desktop-integration
writes. Its output is shellcheck-clean.

Preserve base-generated integrations in the shell fallback.

When launch-scaffolder is unavailable or the source configuration is missing, a base-installed integration can reach the shell fallback. The base launcher has the recognised generated header, but its desktop files have no ownership marker. A copied icon also has no sidecar marker. is_managed_install therefore rejects the installation.

do_integ performs this check before the --force branch, and do_disinteg performs it before removal. Reinstall and removal both fail, including --force.

Add a shared legacy migration check for both operations. It must recognise the exact pre-marker desktop output and establish icon ownership before adding markers or removing files. Do not accept the launcher marker as ownership proof for arbitrary companion files.

Review comment at @aerie-launcher.sh around lines 313 - 344:
Update is_managed_install and the shell-fallback flows used by do_integ and
do_disinteg to share a legacy migration check for pre-marker installs. Recognize
only the exact pre-marker desktop output, and establish ownership of a copied
icon before adding markers or removing files; do not treat the launcher’s
generated header as proof that companion files are owned.
