Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added contribution guidance requiring signed commits for changes reaching the default branch, with instructions for people, agents and automated workflows.
    • Clarified that unsigned pull request commits must be recreated as signed commits, and that changes should be squash-merged.

Walkthrough

Changes

The contribution guide adds commit-signing requirements for people, interactive agents, apps, bots, and workflows. It also specifies squash merges and how to replace unsigned commits.

Contributors may create a replacement PR unnecessarily when a signed force-push to the existing branch is allowed, causing avoidable review churn. Clarify the existing-PR path and retain a new PR as the fallback; this is a minor documentation issue.

Review details

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md: Added commit-signing requirements and workflows: people and interactive agents use registered GitHub SSH signing keys and verified committer emails; apps, bots and workflows create commits through the specified API or action rather than pushing local commits. The section requires squash merges because the ruleset checks every PR-branch commit, and says unsigned commits must be recreated with signed commits; rebase-merge is disabled.

- Merge PRs with **squash**. The ruleset checks every commit on the PR branch,
not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a
branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.

🌐 Web query:

site:github.com/hyperpolymath/standards "force push" OR "force-push" signed commits

💡 Result:

I couldn’t find a matching `hyperpolymath/standards` result for **“force push” / “force-push”** alongside **signed commits**. The search results surfaced GitHub’s general documentation instead, which says that a branch can require signed commits and separately allow or block force pushes; allowing force pushes doesn’t override other branch rules. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/repositories/configuring-branches-and-merges-in-your-repository/managing-rulesets/available-rules-for-rulesets?utm_source=openai))

That doesn’t establish whether the repository itself contains a relevant policy or discussion—the search may not index all of its files or issues.

Keep the existing PR when replacing unsigned commits.

Opening a new PR is not always required. When force-pushes to the source branch are permitted, rewrite and sign the commits, then force-push the branch to the existing PR. Otherwise, open a new PR.

Suggested wording
- branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.
+ branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and force-push it to the existing PR when permitted; otherwise open a new PR.

‼️ IMPORTANT
Carefully review the code before committing. Ensure that it accurately replaces the highlighted code, contains no missing lines, and has no issues with indentation. Thoroughly test & benchmark the code to ensure it meets the requirements.
