Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on commit-signing requirements and supported signing methods.
    • Clarified that unsigned commits on pull request branches block merging, and that squash merging is required.

Walkthrough

The contribution guide adds instructions for signing commits and requirements for merging pull requests.

Changes

Commit signing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Signing and merge requirements
.github/CONTRIBUTING.md
The guide specifies SSH signing for people and interactive agents, API-based signing for apps, bots and workflows, and individual checks for pull request commits. It prescribes squash merges and states that unsigned commits block merging and rebase-merge is disabled.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~4 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to ce44c

The new instructions may lead contributors to use a signing method that conflicts with the repository’s stated requirement. Reconcile the guidance before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to ce44c

No weakening of deployed signing or merge controls is demonstrated. However, the documented protections could not be confirmed, and the new SSH instructions differ from the threat model’s GPG requirement.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The documented security boundary concerns contributor and automation commits entering this repository’s default branch. The inspected change does not establish expanded privileges, new credential access, or increased cross-service exposure.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The supplied security candidate remains deferred with unknown reachability because verification lacks a receipt bound to the candidate and evidence. It is not a verified attack path or a demonstrated PR-introduced vulnerability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The guide asserts unsigned-push rejection, checks on every PR-branch commit, and disabled rebase merging. Available evidence does not confirm the hosted configuration, zero-bypass behavior, or external estate policy, so these assertions cannot be treated as verified controls.

as a *signing* key (`gpg.format=ssh`, `user.signingkey=<key>.pub`,

Reconcile the SSH guidance with the GPG requirement

.github/CONTRIBUTING.md:134-136 directs people and interactive agents to use gpg.format=ssh. docs/THREAT-MODEL.adoc:111-112 explicitly requires GPG-signed commits. No inspected repository policy or owner ruling defines “GPG-signed” generically or authorises SSH as an alternative.

Following the contributor guide can therefore violate the threat model. Align this section with the approved signing policy before merge.
