Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

    • Updated contribution guidance to cover SSH-signed commits, squash merging and the signing requirements for pull request branches.

Walkthrough

The contribution guide replaces GPG signing guidance with SSH signing guidance. It also documents which actors use SSH-signed commits or GitHub’s API, and explains the signing and merge requirements.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md: The local setup prerequisite now requires an SSH signing key instead of a GPG signing key.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md: The code-style guidance now specifies SSH signing for people rather than requiring all commits to be GPG-signed.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md: Adds signing-policy guidance: unsigned pushes to the default branch are refused; people and interactive agents use registered SSH signing keys, while apps, bots and workflows write commits through GitHub’s API. It requires squash merges because unsigned commits anywhere on the PR branch block merging, and states that rebase-merge is disabled.

https://github.com/hyperpolymath/standards/blob/main/docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc required_signatures ruleset CI commit signature enforcement

💡 Result:

## What the policy says

- **Every commit reaching a default branch must be signed.** Humans and interactive agents use a registered SSH signing key; apps, bots, and CI should write through GitHub’s API or the estate’s `signed-push` action so GitHub signs the commit. ([github.com](https://github.com/hyperpolymath/standards/blob/main/docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc))
- **`required_signatures` does not enforce the policy’s GPG/SSH split.** The ruleset accepts any valid signature; the preferred signer is governed by how each writer is configured. ([github.com](https://github.com/hyperpolymath/standards/blob/main/docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc))
- **Ruleset canon:** standalone `require-signed-commits.json`, targeting `~DEFAULT_BRANCH` with `bypass_actors: []`. The policy says to enable it immediately for repos with no unsigned or invalid-signature landings in the prior 30 days; otherwise, enable it after unsigned commit producers are converted. ([github.com](https://github.com/hyperpolymath/standards/blob/main/docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc))
- **Avoid unsigned-producing paths:** rebase merges, the Contents API with a user token/PAT, workflow `git push` with `GITHUB_TOKEN` or a PAT, and bot-written PR-branch fixes. Use squash merges or the listed signed API/action paths instead. ([github.com](https://github.com/hyperpolymath/standards/blob/main/docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc))

**Scope caveat:** this describes the policy on the repository’s `main` branch; the page identifies rulings dated September 30, 2026. It explains the intended ruleset configuration, but doesn’t establish which repositories currently have the ruleset installed. ([github.com](https://github.com/hyperpolymath/standards/blob/main/docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc))

Attribute signing enforcement to the ruleset.

The estate policy identifies the required_signatures ruleset as the enforcement mechanism. Replace CI enforces with the ruleset enforces so the guide names the correct enforcement point.
