Replaces dawidd6/action-send-mail with hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action v0.2.0 (tag commit ede1191ef6ff3ac02c4f4d9efdf837ee517e11d7), per the 2026-09-02 ruling (standards spec §5.5/§9, PR hyperpolymath/standards#725). The whole file is replaced with the rsr-template-repo canonical, which — besides the uses: line — restricts the trigger to branch pushes (tag and deletion payloads mislabel Branch:/head_commit), sets timeout-minutes: 5, carries a deliberately per-run concurrency group, and grants only contents: read. How many of those are actual changes here depends on how far this repo's copy had drifted — read the diff, not this list. Dormant gating on vars.PUSH_EMAIL_ENABLED == 'true' is unchanged. Line 1 SPDX header kept as it was.

Engine: .git-private-farm/scripts/smtp-notify-sweep.sh. Verification for this repo: regime=lock pristine=valid post=valid changed=.github/workflows/actions.lock,.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml, sig=G bbddad8 canon=543fc1474b54 base=main
(pristine/post = gh actions-lock --no-fix validity before/after; repair = the lock was already invalid before this change and is valid after it.)

Replaces dawidd6/action-send-mail with hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action v0.2.0 (ede1191ef6ff3ac02c4f4d9efdf837ee517e11d7) per the 2026-09-02 ruling; file is the rsr-template-repo canonical (dormant gating on vars.PUSH_EMAIL_ENABLED unchanged). regime=lock pristine=valid post=valid changed=.github/workflows/actions.lock,.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml,

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Updated push email notifications to run consistently for branch pushes.
    • Improved notification workflow reliability by preventing overlapping runs from cancelling one another.
    • Added a five-minute execution limit to help prevent stalled notification jobs.
    • Updated the email delivery mechanism while preserving the existing notification settings and enablement controls.

Walkthrough

The push email workflow now runs for branch pushes only, prevents run queuing or cancellation, limits notification execution to five minutes, and uses hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action@v0.2.0.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to bbdda

This workflow can send an empty or malformed email when a branch is deleted, and its SMTP action can change if the referenced tag moves. Exclude deletion events and invoke the action by its pinned commit before merging.

🌐 Web query:

GitHub Actions push event branches filter deleted branch github.event.deleted head_commit absent

💡 Result:

When a branch is deleted on GitHub, the push event is still triggered [1][2]. Because the branch no longer exists, the event payload indicates this deletion by setting the after SHA to a null value (0000000000000000000000000000000000000000) and the head_commit object to null [2]. To prevent your workflow from running during these branch deletions, you can add a conditional filter to your job using the if keyword. Since the head_commit field is absent or null when a branch is deleted, checking for its existence is a common way to filter out these events [2]. You can implement this filter in your workflow YAML as follows: jobs: your_job_name: if: ${{ github.event.head_commit!= null }} runs-on: ubuntu-latest steps: - name: Your step run: echo "This only runs on actual pushes, not deletions." Alternatively, if you specifically want to detect or handle the deletion event, you should use the dedicated delete event type instead of the push event [1][3]. When using the delete event, github.event.ref will provide the name of the branch that was deleted, and github.event.ref_type will identify it as a 'branch' [3][4]. Note that GITHUB_REF and GITHUB_SHA in a push event for a deleted branch will typically reflect the repository's default branch rather than the branch that was deleted [5][3][4]. Therefore, relying on the github.event object properties is the recommended approach for detecting the state of the push [1][3].

Exclude branch-deletion events.

A deleted branch still triggers push with github.event.deleted set and github.event.head_commit null. The workflow passes github.event.head_commit.message to the email body, which can produce an empty notification. Add !github.event.deleted to the job condition.

Pin the action to the locked commit SHA.

v0.2.0 currently resolves to ede1191ef6ff3ac02c4f4d9efdf837ee517e11d7, but the tag remains mutable. A future tag move can change the action that GitHub executes. Use the full commit SHA and retain v0.2.0 only as a comment.
