Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated commit-signing guidance to use SSH signing instead of GPG signing for contributors and interactive agents.
    • Clarified that unsigned pushes are refused and outlined the SSH key and verified email requirements for signed commits.
    • Added guidance for apps and workflows to use GitHub’s API or the signed-push action.
    • Clarified that pull requests must be squash-merged when their branch contains unsigned commits; rebase merging is unavailable.

Walkthrough

The contribution guide now specifies SSH commit signing for people and interactive agents. It describes signing and email requirements, supported methods for apps and workflows, and squash-merge requirements for pull requests.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md: The local-development prerequisites now require an SSH signing key instead of a GPG signing key.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md: The style guidance now specifies SSH signing for people rather than requiring GPG-signed commits.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md: A new signed-commits section states that unsigned pushes to the default branch are refused, specifies SSH signing and verified committer email for people and interactive agents, directs apps and workflows to API-based commits, and requires squash merges; it notes that unsigned PR-branch commits block merging and that rebase-merge is disabled.

Git documentation gpg.format ssh user.signingKey public key file ssh-agent private key signing commits

💡 Result:

For SSH-signed commits, Git’s documentation says:

- Set `gpg.format` to `ssh`.
- `user.signingKey` can be the **path to a private SSH key**, or a **public key** when the matching private key is available through `ssh-agent`. You can also set it directly as `key::ssh-ed25519 ...`. ([git-scm.com](https://git-scm.com/docs/git-config?utm_source=openai))

Example using a public-key file and agent:

```sh
git config --global gpg.format ssh
git config --global user.signingKey ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub
git config --global commit.gpgSign true
```

The private key must be loaded in `ssh-agent`. If `user.signingKey` is unset, Git can try `gpg.ssh.defaultKeyCommand` (for example, `ssh-add -L`) to find a key. ([git-scm.com](https://git-scm.com/docs/git-config?utm_source=openai))

- 2: https://git-scm.com/docs/git-config?utm_source=openai

State the SSH private-key requirement.

With user.signingkey=<key>.pub, Git requires the matching private key to be available through ssh-agent. Add this requirement, or configure user.signingkey with the private-key path.

Suggested fix
- **People and interactive agents** sign with an SSH key registered on GitHub
   as a *signing* key (`gpg.format=ssh`, `user.signingkey=<key>.pub`,
- `commit.gpgsign=true`). The committer email must be verified on that account.
+ `commit.gpgsign=true`). The matching private key must be loaded in
+  `ssh-agent`. Alternatively, set `user.signingkey` to the private-key path.
