Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated contribution guidance to require signed commits on the default branch and explain how people and automated workflows can sign or submit changes.
    • Clarified that unsigned commits on pull request branches prevent merging, squash merges are required, and rebase merges are unavailable.

Walkthrough

The contribution guide adds commit-signing requirements for commits reaching the default branch. It also describes signing methods for different contributors and sets rules for merging pull requests.

Changes

Commit Signing Policy

Layer / File(s) Summary
Signing and merge requirements
CONTRIBUTING.adoc
The guide specifies signing methods for people, interactive agents, apps, bots and workflows. It requires squash merges, explains how unsigned commits affect merging, and states that rebase merging is disabled.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~4 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to ac9ae

The signing guidance is present, but its heading places it outside the contribution guide’s section hierarchy. Correct the heading before merging to keep the guide organized.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to ac9ae

This changes contribution policy, not running code or repository permissions. No introduced bypass is demonstrated, but the claimed signing and merge protections depend on repository settings that were not verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly affected security scope is this repository's contributor workflow and documented default-branch eligibility. The diff does not grant credentials, expand repository permissions, or modify deployed services; downstream estate-wide enforcement is not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The policy distinguishes contributor-held signing keys from GitHub-mediated automation signatures. A signature requirement does not alone establish authorization to contribute or merge. Existing review and check requirements provide documented counterevidence to a bypass, while actual authorization and enforcement settings remain unverified.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Signed cherry-pick recovery creates new signatures and a separate PR; it does not preserve original cryptographic provenance. The instructions contain no explicit review exemption or privilege grant. Preservation of effective review and signature eligibility through interruption, repetition, and concurrent updates depends on unavailable platform controls, so no recovery bypass is established.
