Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added guidance requiring signed commits on the default branch, with signing and verified-email requirements for people and interactive agents.
    • Clarified that apps, bots and workflows should create commits through the API, and that squash merges are required.
    • Documented that unsigned commits on pull request branches block merging, with instructions for recreating those branches using signed commits. Rebase merges are disabled.

Walkthrough

CONTRIBUTING.adoc now describes commit signing requirements for the default branch and merge requirements for pull requests.

This documentation-only change has one small flaw: the recovery command shown for rebuilding a branch with signed commits is incomplete. Fix it before or soon after merging; the risk is minimal.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in CONTRIBUTING.adoc: Added contribution guidance requiring signed commits on the default branch. People and interactive agents use a registered SSH signing key and verified committer email; apps, bots and workflows write commits through the API rather than pushing local commits. PRs must be squash-merged because the ruleset checks every branch commit; unsigned commits block merging, and rebase-merge is disabled.

* Merge PRs with **squash**. The ruleset checks every commit on the PR branch,
not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a
branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add the commit argument to the cherry-pick command.

git cherry-pick -S has no commit to replay, so contributors who copy it cannot recreate the branch. Git’s command syntax requires one or more commit arguments after the options. (git-scm.com)

Proposed correction
- branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.
