Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Contribution guidance now requires commits reaching the default branch to be signed with a registered SSH key and verified committer email.
    • Pull requests must be squash-merged, and unsigned commits on a pull request branch prevent merging. Rebase merging is no longer available.
    • Apps, bots and workflows must use the approved API or signed-push action to create commits.

Walkthrough

CONTRIBUTING.adoc now requires signed commits for commits reaching the default branch. It specifies signing methods and restricts pull requests to squash merging.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Signing and merge requirements
CONTRIBUTING.adoc
The contribution policy requires people and interactive agents to use a GitHub-registered SSH signing key and verified committer email. Apps, bots and workflows must use the API or the estate signed-push action. Pull requests must be squash-merged; unsigned commits on the PR branch block merging, and rebase-merge is disabled.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~4 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to ead5f

The signing instructions remain inconsistent across contributor guides, so contributors may follow a method that does not satisfy the new SSH requirement. Align the guidance; the remaining issues are bounded documentation risks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to ead5f

The change documents stronger contribution controls without changing executable code or deployment configuration. No security weakening was established, but the stated repository enforcement was not independently verified, and another contributor guide retains different signing instructions.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The documented security scope is contribution provenance and default-branch integration. The changed surface does not introduce application privileges, tenant access, secrets, or deployment authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The section states that a ruleset rejects unsigned pushes and unsigned PR-branch commits, requires squash merging, and disables rebase merging. These are documented enforcement claims, not independently verified repository settings.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The unchanged developer guide requires GPG signing, while the added section requires SSH signing for people and interactive agents. This creates inconsistent provenance guidance, but the available evidence does not establish that either path admits unsigned or unauthorized commits.

Keep this heading within the contribution guide hierarchy.

== Signed commits places this heading at the same level as == Contributing to veridical-simulation-core, while the guide’s sections use ===. Change it to === Signed commits so it remains a subsection. Asciidoctor uses the number of = characters to set section levels. (docs.asciidoctor.org)

Align docs/contributing.adoc with the SSH signing policy.

docs/architecture.adoc and docs/usage.adoc link to docs/contributing.adoc, so contributors can still follow its GPG-key and GPG-signing instructions. Those instructions conflict with the SSH-key requirement in this change.

Suggested fix
-* GPG signing key configured (estate policy — all commits must be
