Replaces dawidd6/action-send-mail with hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action v0.2.0 (tag commit ede1191ef6ff3ac02c4f4d9efdf837ee517e11d7), per the 2026-09-02 ruling (standards spec §5.5/§9, PR hyperpolymath/standards#725). The whole file is replaced with the rsr-template-repo canonical, which — besides the uses: line — restricts the trigger to branch pushes (tag and deletion payloads mislabel Branch:/head_commit), sets timeout-minutes: 5, carries a deliberately per-run concurrency group, and grants only contents: read. How many of those are actual changes here depends on how far this repo's copy had drifted — read the diff, not this list. Dormant gating on vars.PUSH_EMAIL_ENABLED == 'true' is unchanged. Line 1 SPDX header kept as it was.

Engine: .git-private-farm/scripts/smtp-notify-sweep.sh. Verification for this repo: regime=no-lock changed=.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml, sig=G fa45844 canon=543fc1474b54 base=main
(pristine/post = gh actions-lock --no-fix validity before/after; repair = the lock was already invalid before this change and is valid after it.)

Review Change Stack

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Improved push notification workflow reliability with explicit branch handling.
    • Prevented active runs from being cancelled by later runs.
    • Added a five-minute execution timeout.
    • Updated the email notification mechanism for more consistent delivery.

Walkthrough

The push email workflow now filters branch pushes, prevents run cancellation or queuing, limits permissions, sets a five-minute timeout, documents the notification action, and uses a pinned SMTP action.

Changes

Push email notification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workflow triggers and notification delivery
.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml
The workflow handles branch pushes while excluding tags and deletions. It uses per-run concurrency, a five-minute timeout, contents: read permission, and the pinned hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action implementation.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to fa458

Deleting a branch can send a misleading push-notification email when email notifications are enabled. Add a deleted-event guard before merging.

Poem

A rabbit checks the branch at dawn
The SMTP note hops safely on
Each run keeps its own small lane
Five minutes guard the mailer’s reign
Pinned bytes twinkle in the rain

🌐 Web query:

GitHub Actions push event branch deletion branches filter github.event.deleted workflow

💡 Result:

In GitHub Actions, you cannot filter the push event based on whether a branch was deleted [1][2]. The push event triggers for various activities, including branch creation and deletion, but there is no native branches filter or condition within the on.push configuration that distinguishes a "deletion" push event from a standard code push [3]. Key points regarding your query: 1. Push vs. Delete Events: The push event triggers when a branch is deleted, but the GITHUB_REF context variable will point to the repository's default branch rather than the branch that was actually deleted [1][2]. You cannot use the standard branches filter to isolate these specific push events [3]. 2. Handling Deletions: If you need to trigger a workflow specifically when a branch is deleted, use the delete event instead of the push event [4][5]. 3. Identifying the Deleted Branch: Since the delete event runs after the branch has been removed, GITHUB_REF is not reliable for identifying the deleted branch [5][6]. Instead, you must access the deleted branch name from the event payload using ${{ github.event.ref }} [5][7]. 4. Recommended Pattern: To perform actions upon branch deletion, use a workflow configured for the delete event [5]: name: Branch Deleted on: delete jobs: cleanup: if: github.event.ref_type == 'branch' runs-on: ubuntu-latest steps: - name: Handle Deletion run: echo "The branch ${{ github.event.ref }} was deleted." If you are trying to stop a push-triggered workflow from running when a branch is deleted, you can add a conditional check at the job level [4]: jobs: build: if: ${{!github.event.deleted }} runs-on: ubuntu-latest steps: - run: echo "This only runs on actual pushes." Note that standard push filters cannot be used to selectively ignore or target these deletion-related push events directly within the on block [3].

Exclude deleted branch push events.

When PUSH_EMAIL_ENABLED is true, a deleted branch push can pass branches: ['**'] and run notify. Add github.event.deleted == false to the job condition.
