Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Documented commit-signing requirements for changes reaching the default branch, including how people, agents, apps and workflows should sign or submit changes.
    • Clarified that pull requests must be squash-merged and unsigned commits prevent merging.

Walkthrough

CONTRIBUTING.adoc adds signed-commit requirements, signing instructions for different contributors, and rules for merging pull requests.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~4 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 1e9fd

The guide’s squash-only instruction matches the estate policy. The available settings do not establish a concrete mergeability risk.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1e9fd

The change adds signing and squash-only merge guidance without changing enforcement. The assertion that rebase merging is disabled is not reconciled with the available control configuration. No signature bypass or privilege increase is established, but the policy-to-enforcement mismatch warrants a low risk assessment.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The newly documented squash-only contract asserts that rebase merging is disabled, while an earlier inspection reports that the active ruleset allows rebase. Repository-level restrictions could still disable it, but those settings are unresolved. This is a bounded policy-assurance concern, not proof that unsigned commits can reach the default branch or that this PR weakens enforcement.

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported scope is this repository's contribution and default-branch merge boundary. The changed surface supplies no evidence of new authority over another repository, tenant, service, or data store.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — A retained low-severity security finding concerns the signing and merge-method configuration. Its supplied assessment leaves reachability and likelihood unknown. The ruleset's allowed rebase method does not establish that rebase is selectable, that required signatures can be bypassed, or that this documentation PR introduced the underlying condition.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The documented trust boundary is admission of signed commits to the default branch. Earlier inspection reports required-signature enforcement alongside broadly allowed merge methods. Effective squash-only enforcement still depends on repository-level settings that were not established by that inspection.

Correct the rebase-merge statement. The active ruleset includes required_signatures, but it also allows merge, squash, and rebase. Replace the claim that rebase-merge is disabled with the policy requirement.

Suggested wording
- Rebase-merge replays commits unsigned and is disabled.
+ Rebase-merge is allowed by the repository ruleset. Use squash-merge to
+ follow the estate policy.
