Replaces dawidd6/action-send-mail with hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action v0.2.0 (tag commit ede1191ef6ff3ac02c4f4d9efdf837ee517e11d7), per the 2026-09-02 ruling (standards spec §5.5/§9, PR hyperpolymath/standards#725). The whole file is replaced with the rsr-template-repo canonical, which — besides the uses: line — restricts the trigger to branch pushes (tag and deletion payloads mislabel Branch:/head_commit), sets timeout-minutes: 5, carries a deliberately per-run concurrency group, and grants only contents: read. How many of those are actual changes here depends on how far this repo's copy had drifted — read the diff, not this list. Dormant gating on vars.PUSH_EMAIL_ENABLED == 'true' is unchanged. Line 1 SPDX header kept as it was.

Engine: .git-private-farm/scripts/smtp-notify-sweep.sh. Verification for this repo: regime=no-lock changed=.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml, sig=G 65603fa canon=543fc1474b54 base=main
(pristine/post = gh actions-lock --no-fix validity before/after; repair = the lock was already invalid before this change and is valid after it.)

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Updated automated email notifications to run for branch pushes.
    • Improved notification reliability by preventing overlapping runs from cancelling one another.
    • Added a five-minute execution limit to help prevent stalled notification processes.

Walkthrough

The push notification workflow now runs for branch pushes, keeps concurrent runs active, limits job duration to five minutes, and uses a pinned SMTP notification action.

Changes

Push email notification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Event and run control
.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml
The workflow matches branch pushes with ** and excludes tag and deletion events. Each run uses a distinct concurrency group without cancellation.
Notification execution
.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml
The job has a five-minute timeout and uses the pinned hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action revision. Documentation describes the re-landed workflow and action.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 65603

Branch deletion events may generate incorrect push notification emails. The workflow should explicitly skip deleted pushes before merge.

Poem

A rabbit checks the push at dawn
Branches hop while tags stay gone
Each run keeps its place in line
SMTP carries mail on time
Five short minutes mark the sign

GitHub Actions workflow syntax push branch filters branch deletion deleted true head_commit null payload

💡 Result:

When a GitHub branch is deleted, the push event is triggered in your repository [1][2]. In this scenario, the webhook payload for that push event sets the deleted field to true, and the head_commit property is set to null [1][3]. Because the push event triggers for both standard commits and branch deletions, workflows configured with an on: push trigger will execute when a branch is deleted [4][2]. If your workflow accesses github.event.head_commit, it will fail or encounter errors when a branch deletion occurs because that object is null [5]. To handle this behavior, you can use conditional filtering in your workflow: 1. Skip the job if the branch was deleted: You can use an expression in your job's if condition to check the deleted property from the payload [2]. if: ${{!github.event.deleted }} 2. Use the delete event instead: If you need to perform actions specifically when a branch is deleted, use the on: delete event trigger [6][2]. In this case, the branch name is available in the payload via github.event.ref [7]. Example workflow configuration: name: CI on: push: branches: [main] delete: jobs: build: # Only run on push events that are not branch deletions if: github.event_name == 'push' && github.event.deleted == false runs-on: ubuntu-latest steps: - run: echo "Running on push..." handle-deletion: # Only run on delete events if: github.event_name == 'delete' runs-on: ubuntu-latest steps: - run: echo "Branch ${{ github.event.ref }} was deleted."

Skip branch-deletion push events.

When github.event.deleted is true, github.event.head_commit is null, so this job can send an empty-head notification. Add && !github.event.deleted to the job condition.
