I have a quick hack (would need a small amount of clean up before considering as a PR) that allows building with gcc.

Tested with https://strawberryperl.com/ (strawberry-perl-5.38.2.2-64bit-portable) - which is one of the easier C/C++ compiler distributions to use 😆
