Premium P1: backend dev service — accounts, entitlements, test buy flow, admin panel

Design-first: post the service design (stack, data model, auth, entitlement API the clients consume, admin panel surface, dev-instance runbook) on this issue for XO gate before implementation. Constraints: dev instance on existing infra, zero new spend, payment provider in test mode only, credential handling per repo security posture.

P1 mini-design: premium backend dev service

Decision summary

Build a separate services/premium/ FastAPI service, not a route inside the local transcription engine. The dev instance runs loopback-only on an existing Tailscale-connected host, uses SQLite on an existing disk, and is exposed privately with Tailscale Serve. Stripe Checkout runs in test/sandbox mode; Stripe CLI forwards signed test events outbound-to-localhost, so the dev service needs no public ingress and creates no hosting spend.

The product has three explicit states:

“Local” is deliberately not treated as “free.” Opening the desktop app, transcribing a local file, reading a local library, or using the existing private home-engine reader never creates an account request or ad request. The premium service receives no audio, transcript text, source URL, title, local path, engine bearer, or chapter-provider key in P1.

House ads are the only representable inventory source. There is no third-party-network enum, script slot, pixel, SDK, or arbitrary HTML field. An external ad network remains the epic's operator-owned fork and cannot be enabled through configuration alone.

1. Service and deployment boundary

services/premium/ is an independently locked Python project:

• FastAPI + Pydantic for typed HTTP contracts, matching the repository's existing server conventions;
• SQLAlchemy 2 + Alembic for an explicit schema/migration boundary;
• SQLite in WAL mode for this single-instance dev service;
• Argon2id password hashes (argon2-cffi), with pinned parameters and rehash-on-login;
• Stripe's official Python library for Checkout and signature verification;
• server-rendered Jinja admin/account pages with first-party CSS and minimal first-party JavaScript only where progressive enhancement materially helps.

It is not imported by podcast_reader, added to the frozen engine, or shipped in the desktop installer. Its dependencies and lockfile stay isolated so local-only builds do not grow an online-service dependency.

The process listens only on 127.0.0.1:8090. The dev URL is an existing tailnet host on a non-conflicting HTTPS listener, initially:

The runbook first reads tailscale serve status --json and stops rather than overwrite any existing listener. Serve terminates HTTPS and applies tailnet policy; Funnel is never invoked. Tailscale documents both private reverse proxying and the localhost-listen recommendation for this shape.

The host name is a deployment input, not committed product configuration. Moving from private dev to a public production host is a later hosting/security gate; SQLite is explicitly a dev-instance choice, not a claim about production scale.

2. Account authentication

Browser account session

P1 dev registration uses email + password. Email is normalized for uniqueness but the user-entered display form is retained. Because P1 has no email-delivery provider, dev registration is visibly marked unverified test account; public registration cannot be enabled in a production mode until email ownership/recovery is designed and gated.

Browser login creates a 256-bit random opaque session token. Only its SHA-256 digest is stored. The cookie is __Host- prefixed, Secure, HttpOnly, SameSite=Lax, path /, and has no Domain attribute. Lax is deliberate so Stripe's top-level success redirect can resume the account page; state-changing browser requests still require a synchronizer CSRF token plus exact Origin/Host checks. Login is rate-limited by normalized account and source, and error copy never distinguishes an unknown email from a wrong password.

Native client authorization

Desktop and Android never collect or store the account password. They use an RFC-8628-shaped device authorization flow:

1. POST /v1/device-authorizations returns a high-entropy device_code, short human user_code, verification URL, expiry, and minimum poll interval.
2. The client opens the verification URL in the system browser. The user signs in there and explicitly approves the named client.
3. The client polls POST /v1/device-authorizations/token; pending/slow-down/expired/approved are fixed states.
4. Approval returns an opaque access token plus rotating refresh token. Database stores digests only.

Codes expire after 10 minutes, are one-use, have bounded attempts, and approval names the client type—not a user-controlled device string. Polling faster than the advertised interval returns slow_down; token issuance is transactional so two polls cannot mint two token families.

Access tokens last 15 minutes. Refresh tokens last 30 days, rotate on every use, and use family reuse detection: presenting an already-rotated token revokes that family. Logout/revoke is server-side. Desktop stores only the refresh token via Electron safeStorage; Android later stores it under a distinct Keystore-backed premium-account record. It is never co-located with, substituted for, or attached to requests carrying the home-engine bearer.

The initial admin is created locally with a CLI that prompts on the host; no bootstrap password or bearer enters an environment variable, command line, repository, or log. P1 does not expose role editing in the panel and cannot disable the last active admin.

3. Test buy and entitlement truth

P1 uses one Stripe-hosted Checkout Session in payment mode against one test Price. This gives “premium by the buy” a deterministic dev proof without prematurely choosing the production billing cadence. A later live-money decision may map recurring subscription state into the same entitlement projection without changing the client contract.

Flow:

1. Authenticated user selects Buy premium (test) in the account page.
2. POST /v1/billing/checkout-sessions creates a server-side Checkout Session with the configured test Price, existing Stripe Customer where present, an internal checkout-attempt ID in metadata, exact dev success/cancel URLs, and an idempotency key.
3. Browser redirects to Stripe-hosted Checkout. No card fields, Stripe.js, or payment data enter our page.
4. The success redirect says Payment received; confirming entitlement and polls entitlement state. It never grants premium.
5. Only a verified checkout.session.completed test webhook enters the payment-event inbox. A durable worker retrieves that Checkout Session from Stripe and grants premium only after independently confirming livemode=false, payment_status=paid, the expected test Price/quantity, Customer, internal user/attempt metadata, and currency/amount configured for the dev product.

At startup the service rejects sk_live_; it retrieves the configured Price and fails closed if the Stripe object reports livemode=true. Every webhook is verified over the unmodified raw body, Stripe-Signature, and the Stripe CLI endpoint secret with the library's normal timestamp tolerance. After verification, the handler inserts the minimal event inbox row and returns 2xx; it does not perform entitlement work on the request path. event.id is unique, so duplicates acknowledge without another effect. One restart-safe worker claims pending rows, retrieves authoritative Stripe objects, and applies an idempotent transaction without assuming event order. The stored event record contains event ID/type, object IDs, payload SHA-256, timestamps, processing result, and livemode—not the full payload or payment details.

The dev host runs Stripe CLI in test mode with an explicit event allowlist and forwards to http://127.0.0.1:8090/v1/webhooks/stripe. Stripe documents localhost forwarding for sandbox events; this avoids Funnel/public ingress. Its generated whsec_… is placed in a root/user-owned 0600 credential file and the service is restarted; neither CLI nor service logs the value.

Entitlement precedence

Provider truth and operator override are separate fields:

An admin toggle therefore never rewrites or fabricates Stripe state. Set premium, Set free, and Clear override are three distinct actions, each requiring a reason and audit record. Clearing resumes provider truth. Disabling a user revokes sessions and makes every entitlement request unauthorized, without deleting purchase history.

4. Client entitlement contract

GET /v1/me/entitlements requires the premium-service bearer and returns one fixed, versioned projection:

For a signed-in free user, tier is free, ad_policy is house only when the ad-system flag is enabled, and premium capabilities are false. For premium, ad_policy is always none; a feature flag can disable a premium feature globally but can never grant a premium capability to free.

The response has an ETag derived from entitlement + flag revisions and Cache-Control: private, no-store. Native clients may keep the last projection encrypted as presentation state, but it is never authority for a server-side premium operation. The service re-evaluates entitlement on every protected API call.

Failure semantics are explicit:

• anonymous local mode never calls this endpoint;
• service unavailable leaves local transcription/library/reader untouched and marks online features unavailable;
• an expired native token attempts one refresh, then returns to account connection without deleting the home-engine pairing;
• no cached/expired response causes remote ads to appear offline;
• unknown schema/capability values fail closed for online premium actions, not for local features.

Every error uses a bounded {code, message, request_id} envelope. No stack trace, email, token, Stripe body, or secret-derived text reaches clients or logs.

5. Data model

All IDs are server-generated random IDs and all times are UTC. Foreign keys are on; migrations and startup fail closed on an unknown/newer schema.

• users: id, normalized/display email, Argon2id hash, active|disabled, user|admin, verification state, timestamps.
• browser_sessions: token digest, user, CSRF secret digest, expiry/revocation timestamps.
• device_authorizations: device/user-code digests, client kind, state, approving user, poll interval/counter, expiry, consumed timestamp.
• token_families + refresh_tokens: family/user/client, token digest, generation, expiry, rotation/reuse/revocation state.
• stripe_customers: one internal user ↔ one test customer ID.
• checkout_attempts: internal ID, user, Stripe Checkout Session ID, created|completed|expired, timestamps.
• payment_events: unique provider event ID, event type/object IDs, payload digest, livemode, pending|processing|processed|rejected state, received/claim/processed/result timestamps. Stale processing claims return to pending after restart.
• entitlement_events: append-only grant/revoke/override-set/override-clear records with source reference, actor, reason, timestamp.
• entitlement_projection: provider tier, nullable admin override, effective tier, revision, last event; rebuilt/asserted from the ledger in tests.
• feature_flags: code-owned key, off|all|free|premium, validated config JSON, revision, actor, timestamp. Unknown keys cannot be created through the UI.
• ad_config: singleton master state, house-only source, enabled slot allowlist, revision.
• house_ads: draft/active state, plain-text title/body, validated https CTA URL, schedule, revision. No HTML, script, image URL, pixel, per-user targeting, or third-party source.
• audit_log: append-only admin/security action, actor, target kind/ID, before/after digest or bounded nonsecret delta, reason, request ID, timestamp.

SQLite runs a single application worker in WAL mode with a busy timeout; entitlement and webhook transitions use BEGIN IMMEDIATE transactions. Before every migration the runbook takes a file-consistent backup and proves restore into a temporary instance. Multi-process deployment and PostgreSQL are deliberately deferred to a production-host design.

6. Admin panel

/admin/ is same-origin, server-rendered, and admin-role gated. It sends a header CSP (default-src 'none'; style-src 'self'; script-src 'self'; img-src 'self'; connect-src 'self'; base-uri 'none'; form-action 'self'; frame-ancestors 'none'), plus HSTS on the HTTPS-facing dev URL, X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff, and a restrictive referrer policy. It has no analytics, external fonts/CDNs, payment fields, raw SQL, or secret display.

Surfaces:

1. Users — search exact/prefix email, filter active/disabled and effective tier, paginate; never bulk-export.
2. User detail — account status, provider tier, override, effective tier, entitlement revision, test-checkout history IDs/status, active session counts, and audit history. Actions: set premium/free override, clear override, revoke sessions, disable/enable. Every mutation requires a typed reason and confirmation.
3. Feature flags — only code-registered keys; set audience state/config, preview resulting free/premium capabilities, and record revision/audit. A flag cannot bypass entitlement classification.
4. Ad configuration — master off/on for signed-in free, slot allowlist, and CRUD for plain-text house ads. The UI contains no external-network option.
5. Audit — filter by actor/action/target/time and inspect bounded deltas. No edit/delete control.

The last active admin cannot be disabled, demoted, or session-revoked by a bulk action. P1 has no role-management UI; adding an admin is a host CLI operation and audit event.

7. Privacy and security invariants

• The local engine and premium service have different origins, tokens, storage records, and API clients. A premium token is never accepted by the engine; an engine bearer is never accepted or uploaded by the premium service.
• No P1 route accepts audio, transcripts, library rows, titles, source URLs, local paths, cookies, or provider keys.
• Logs contain timestamp, fixed route template, status, latency, request ID, and bounded security code only. Request/response bodies, Authorization/Cookie headers, emails, raw URLs/query strings, and Stripe payloads are excluded.
• Database backups are owner-only on the existing host and never committed or uploaded by CI.
• Secrets live in systemd credentials or an owner-only credential file outside the checkout. Startup rejects missing secrets, default secrets, live Stripe keys, and a live Price.
• Admin and account HTML are escaped by default; house-ad fields are text, never markup. Security tests inject hostile email/reason/ad/config values through every rendered and JSON surface.
• Browser state changes enforce CSRF + exact Origin/Host. Native bearer routes reject tokens in query strings and cap request bodies. Webhook verification occurs before JSON parsing.
• Payment completion is webhook-authoritative and idempotent. Redirect parameters, client tier claims, and admin-visible Stripe status text never grant entitlement.

8. Dev-instance runbook

1. Resolve an existing Tailscale host and read its Serve configuration; stop on listener conflict.
2. Create owner-only service/data/credential directories; build from the locked services/premium environment.
3. Generate session/CSRF/token-pepper secrets locally; install only Stripe test key, test Price ID, and CLI webhook secret. Run a startup preflight that retrieves the Price and proves livemode=false.
4. Back up SQLite, run Alembic migrations, bootstrap the first admin interactively, then start one supervised Uvicorn worker on 127.0.0.1:8090.
5. Configure private HTTPS with Tailscale Serve on an unused listener; verify it is Serve, not Funnel, and that direct LAN/tailnet access to port 8090 fails.
6. Start Stripe CLI with only checkout.session.completed,checkout.session.expired, forwarding to localhost. Record no CLI session secret in shell history.
7. Smoke: register free → authorize a native test client → entitlement says free; complete Stripe test Checkout → verified event changes the same account to premium; duplicate/reordered event is harmless; admin sets free → effective free; clear override → premium; disable user → all sessions fail.
8. Exercise backup/restore into a temporary data directory and compare user, entitlement, flag, ad-config, and audit counts.

GET /healthz returns only status, schema version, and build SHA. A separate authenticated admin diagnostics view reports Stripe mode/forwarder freshness and migration state without key/object values.

9. Proof plan

Unit/property tests

• email normalization/uniqueness; Argon2 parameter/rehash path; generic login failures;
• device-code entropy, expiry, attempts, poll throttling, transactional one-use issue;
• access/refresh rotation, replay family revocation, digest-only persistence;
• entitlement precedence and ledger→projection rebuild across arbitrary event order;
• flag × tier matrix, especially “flag never grants premium to free” and “premium always ad_policy=none”;
• hostile strings remain text in admin/account/ad surfaces.

API/security integration

• CSRF/Origin/Host/cookie flags, including a top-level Stripe return with SameSite=Lax; authz matrix for every admin and user route;
• no token in URL/log/error/database plaintext; fixed body/response limits;
• Stripe raw-body signature, old timestamp, wrong secret, livemode=true, unpaid/wrong-Price/wrong-Customer/wrong-metadata Session, duplicate and out-of-order events, and crash/reclaim of an inbox row;
• success/cancel redirect cannot grant; only verified event can;
• disabled user and revoked token fail immediately;
• response contract fixtures for future desktop/Android parity tests.

Browser/admin e2e

• bootstrap/login, user filters/detail, all override transitions, session revoke/disable, feature preview, house-ad CRUD, audit immutability;
• keyboard/focus/contrast and narrow viewport; CSP violation listener stays empty; zero third-party requests except the explicit navigation to Stripe-hosted Checkout.

Privacy regression

• run the existing desktop with no premium account configured under an independent network observer: zero premium-service requests while local transcription/library/reader remain green;
• repository scan proves premium package is absent from frozen engine/installer dependency closure;
• captured premium-service requests contain no transcript/audio/source/library fields.

Real dev smoke

• one Stripe sandbox Checkout and forwarded signed webhook on the tailnet dev URL;
• Tailscale Serve status proves private listener, loopback target, and no Funnel;
• restart durability, migration backup/restore, duplicate webhook replay.

CI uses a deterministic fake billing adapter and signed fixture events; it needs no Stripe secret. The real sandbox smoke is a dev-instance acceptance gate, not a CI secret dependency.

10. Implementation slices after approval

1. Service/auth foundation — isolated package, migrations, accounts/browser sessions/device flow/token rotation, contract fixtures.
2. Entitlements/admin — ledger/projection, client endpoint, flags, house-only ad config, audit panel.
3. Test buy — Stripe adapter, Checkout, raw webhook/idempotency/live-mode rejection, fake + real sandbox smokes.
4. Dev deployment — supervised loopback service, conflict-safe Tailscale runbook, backup/restore and full acceptance evidence.

Each slice is independently reviewable; no desktop/mobile client behavior changes in P1.

11. Rejected alternatives

• Put accounts into the local engine: mixes public identity/payment state with the private bearer and makes “local-only” dishonest.
• GitHub Pages as backend: it is static and cannot safely hold accounts, entitlements, admin state, or webhook secrets.
• New free-tier cloud vendor: technically possible, but “free today” is not the same as existing infrastructure and would create a vendor/production decision P1 does not need.
• Tailscale Funnel/public webhook: expands the dev attack surface. Stripe CLI's outbound sandbox forwarding solves the dev webhook without it.
• JWT entitlements: hard to revoke and encourages clients to treat cached claims as server authority. Opaque, digest-stored tokens keep revocation simple.
• Trust Checkout success redirect: forgeable/replayable; only a signed, idempotent test webhook grants.
• Third-party ads behind a flag: would let configuration cross the operator-owned fork. P1 schema is house-only.
• Treat unsigned local users as free: would force account/ad traffic into the existing local product. Local remains a separate no-service state.

12. Parallelization recommendation

Request a second desk for #123's design delta now, while this desk implements P1 after approval.

Evidence: the merged Android design is already complete and Linux-buildable, but it explicitly lists OAuth out of scope and contains no accounts, premium-service token, entitlement cache, or ad boundary; the repository still contains no Android scaffold. #123 therefore needs a bounded design delta for two independent trust domains (home-engine pairing vs premium account), separate Keystore records/transports, device authorization, local-vs-online-free behavior, entitlement contract fixtures, and house-ad containment. That design can consume the version-1 contract above without waiting for the P1 database/admin/Stripe implementation. Android code should still wait for #123's own gate.

P2 subscription placement and P5 corpus privacy remain genuine later designs and should not be pulled into P1.

Primary-source validation

Design gate: APPROVED

Verdict on the P1 mini-design above — approved. What carried it:

• The three-state model (local ≠ online-free ≠ premium) is the design's spine and it's exactly right. Local mode makes zero premium-service calls and is proven so by a network-observer privacy regression plus a dependency-closure scan keeping the premium package out of the frozen engine/installer. That keeps the shipped privacy story true structurally, not by promise.
• The operator's ad fork is enforced in the schema, not in discipline: house-only inventory with no third-party enum, no HTML/script/pixel/SDK fields — an external network CANNOT arrive via configuration; it requires a design change through the operator's gate. This is the mechanical enforcement the epic asked for.
• Entitlement truth is webhook-authoritative and ledgered: signed raw-body verification, event inbox with idempotent worker, livemode fail-closed at startup AND per-event, redirect-can-never-grant, provider-truth vs admin-override as separate audited fields. The rejected-alternatives section (JWT, redirect-grant, engine-embedded accounts) is correctly reasoned throughout.
• Zero-spend dev shape holds: existing tailnet host, loopback + Serve (never Funnel), SQLite scoped honestly to dev, Stripe test mode with CLI outbound forwarding — no ingress, no vendor, no bill.

Conditions folded into implementation (none change the design):

1. The existing private-web Serve config is inviolate — the stop-on-listener-conflict runbook step becomes an explicit acceptance assertion: after deployment, the home-engine private reader must still verify green.
2. The v1 entitlement contract freezes as committed fixtures the moment slice 1 lands — desktop/Android/Premium P4: Android app build — free with ads, premium ad-free #123 consume those fixtures; contract changes bump schema_version through a gate.
3. Dev-instance activation is mine to run (private-tailnet, reversible, zero-spend = within autonomous deploy authority); the operator gets the dev URL + admin bootstrap handover when it's live, as an FYI not a gate.

P1 slice 4 is ready for independent gate in #132. The exact-head host preparation is complete through the credential/activation boundary: immutable release installed, migrations and restore-proven backups complete, initial admin handover stored owner-only, pinned Stripe CLI and hardened units installed, listener conflict check green, existing Serve mappings unchanged, and hosted CI green. Activation was not performed; Stripe sandbox credentials, supervised live start, Serve 8443, and the acceptance smoke remain XO-owned as approved.

P1 status marker (issue deliberately kept OPEN): all four implementation slices plus the contract completion are merged (#125/#127/#129/#130/#132 — auth foundation, entitlements/admin, test buy, native-auth contract, deployment prep) and the host is prepared fail-closed. This issue closes at DEV-INSTANCE ACTIVATION, which is the XO-owned final step of its gated design and is currently [awaiting-auth] on the operator's Stripe TEST credentials (asked 2026-08-02; sk_test_ key + test Price ID).
