Summary

Ports the still-relevant Gilded Gnosis (voipmonitor/vllm gilded-gnosis line) fixes that never landed in the Karmic Kraken lineage. Selection method: full commit-graph diff of dev/gilded-gnosis vs dev/karmic-kraken (181 GG-only commits), content-presence probing of each against the KK tree, then dry-run cherry-pick. The GG b12x/Sparkinfer kernel stack, DS4/DSpark series, glm52 NVFP4-MLA series and DCP/CKV series were excluded — KK carries its own evolved implementations of those subsystems.

Included (7 commits)

Clean cherry-picks (authored by Zihua Wu, GG e91a9ca6d/68c224203/781162224/338f7ab73 series):

  • 2646b2f49 [Perf] Add SM120 sequence-parallelism threshold table entries — RTX PRO 6000 (SM120, PCIe-only) SP enablement thresholds + tests
  • e038d98c3 [Fix] Serialize symm-mem all-reduce on a dedicated stream
  • 83053b866 [Fix] Gate symm-mem all-reduce on native P2P atomic support (adds platforms/cuda.py P2P-atomic detection)

Hand-ported (original authors credited in commit messages, -x provenance for the clean ones):

  • a7e41cfd9 spec-decode: cap same-model draft position limit to the target RoPE table (GG d188a80bf, Martin Vit) — in-checkpoint drafts (MTP) advertising a larger max_position_embeddings than the target run past the target's RoPE table; now capped. +tests
  • e894bf5fa entrypoints: accept an empty tools array like an omitted field (GG 348dd0b9b, Florian Bernd) — OpenAI parity; clients (e.g. Xcode AI assistants) send tools=[] unconditionally and currently get 400s. Forced calls with zero tools still rejected. +tests
  • 93dcdc1d8 metrics: count scheduled prompt tokens for chunked-prefill throughput (GG da89d3c37, Luke Alonso, adapted) — prompt throughput now accumulates SchedulerStats.num_scheduled_prompt_tokens per step so chunked prefills count as chunks finish. KK already had compute_iteration_details; only the stats plumbing was missing. (GG's test_loggers.py additions not ported — KK has no such test file.)
  • f6a54e661 [Bugfix] two-arg residual norm form in HYV3Model final norm (GG 338f7ab73)

Verified not-needed (already in KK, semantically)

  • KV-xfer stale send/receive completion guards (a6f4a051a, 0cbb01949) — KK's scheduler already guards finished_sending/finished_recving with RequestStatus.is_finished + warnings
  • int32/uint8 packed MLA weight dtype guard (7c00e63d2) — KK's _get_kv_b_proj_input_dtype already keeps packed containers out of activation-dtype casts
  • FlashInfer persistent-decode-wrapper q_len invariant (3faddf9fe) — mechanism absent in KK's FlashInfer backend
  • InstantTensor borrowed-buffer mode (5d2079094), repeatable-serving-peak profiling (2d9c98010) — superseded by KK's own profiling/peak-activation system

Known remaining gaps (deliberately NOT in this PR — larger ports, follow-ups welcome)

  • Prompt-logprobs GPU accumulation (GG 9156bf5f8): KK's PromptLogprobsWorker still keeps in-progress prompt-logprob tensors on GPU until prompt completion (unbounded device memory for long/concurrent prompts); GG moved accumulation to CPU + added VLLM_PROMPT_LOGPROBS_CHUNK_SIZE + profile-run accounting
  • kv-offload offloading-connector fixes (GG fa033bd4e/36ac40cd3/5c19d376b/c29debe6e/f80fb5b45/7cc9963db/25a0ae51d): stale-load recovery, shared CPU region hardening, SWA/MTP retention, defer-finalization — same upstream offloading codebase, fixes conflict with KK's evolved scheduler
  • EXL3 rank-sliced MTP draft series (~15 GG commits incl. the unmerged rank-sliced weight-name normalization): absent in KK; relevant if EXL3 rank-sliced trellis serving is on the KK roadmap
  • torch symm-mem two-shot AR on SM120 + PCIe barrier/workspace-guard series (e91a9ca6d, 67cb58295, dc064c4d7, 2d9e5951f, c7770ce28) — conflicts with KK's symm_mem.py; needs semantic re-implementation against KK's B12X/FlashInfer PCIe paths

Testing

  • Syntax-validated all touched files; new unit tests included for the spec-cap and empty-tools ports (cpu_test mark)
  • No GPU/serve validation run in this environment — recommend the standard KK A/B anchors (C1 decode, prefill, GSM8K) before a beta-channel build

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added sequence-parallelism support for SM120 GPUs.
    • Prompt-throughput metrics now reflect prompt tokens scheduled for execution in each step.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Chat completion requests with an empty tools list now validate like requests without tools when tool choice is unset, automatic, or disabled. Incompatible named or required tool choices remain invalid.
    • Draft models sharing the target model now use the target’s lower position limit when applicable.
  • Reliability
    • Symmetric-memory communication now checks GPU support for native peer-to-peer atomics and uses a dedicated stream for all-reduce operations.

Round 2 (2026-10-17): the bigger ports (items 1, 2, 4 from the original ledger)

1. Prompt-logprobs memory — PORTED (2d36e0eb3, GG 9156bf5f8)

  • V2 PromptLogprobsWorker: chunk results now accumulate into a pre-sized CPU buffer per request (LogprobsTensors.empty_cpu) instead of holding per-step GPU tensors until prompt completion — unbounded device memory on long/concurrent prompts is gone. Adds profile_run() so memory profiling accounts for the prompt-logprobs workspace, and VLLM_PROMPT_LOGPROBS_CHUNK_SIZE (default 1024) to bound full-vocabulary logits rows materialized at once.
  • V1 legacy runner: per-request logits computation is chunked (one-shot [num_logits, vocab] OOMs, upstream [Misc]: [V1] prompt logprobs + chunked prefill can result in EngineCore partial prefill output vllm-project/vllm#14239) and now respects logprobs_mode — this also fixes a dangling logits reference in the KK V1 path.
  • get_kv_cache_configs: warns when num_gpu_blocks_override exceeds the profiled capacity.
  • KK adaptations: kept KK's LogprobsMode/compute_topk_scores plumbing and KK's _pool_bytes_per_block(groups) signature; LogprobsTensors.empty_cpu already existed in KK.

4. torch symm-mem two-shot SM120 + PCIe barrier series — 4 of 5 PORTED

  • eb15d5829 PCIe-safe stream-memops barrier (GG 67cb58295): new symm_mem_pcie_barrier.py (stream-memops sequence protocol replacing the CAS group barrier on PCIe-only topologies), VLLM_SYMM_MEM_PCIE_SAFE_BARRIER env, cuda_communicator wiring.
  • 8a7556d96 workspace growth guard (GG dc064c4d7) and 32f10fc63 single-stream fused-op peer traffic (GG 2d9e5951f): clean applies on top of the barrier file.
  • 7e1e67c76 two-shot all-reduce on SM120 (GG e91a9ca6d): adds the 12.0 two-shot size table (measured 1.2-2x vs NCCL ring on 4x RTX PRO 6000 from ~160 KB through 64 MB) + SYMM_MEM_ALL_REDUCE_MIN_SIZES barrier floor + multimem world-size entry; merged alongside KK's sm_107 entries.
  • NOT ported — c7770ce28 (custom AR PCIe opt-in): KK's integrated VLLM_ENABLE_PCIE_ALLREDUCE backend (b12x/DMA/oneshot/twoshot knobs) already supersedes GG's VLLM_ALLOW_CUSTOM_ALLREDUCE_PCIE generic 2-stage opt-in; wiring both would ship two overlapping dispatcher paths. Worth stealing separately: GG's measured raise of the custom-AR ceiling to 256 MiB on PCIe-only topologies (chunked-prefill ARs beat NCCL 1.15-1.3x up to 256 MB) — suggest folding that sizing into KK's PCIe backend.

2. kv-offload offloading-connector series — verified mostly superseded; subsystems ledgered

Per-commit semantic verification against KK's current offloading stack (which is ~2 months ahead of GG's Aug-11 state — deferred lookups, load caps, partial-tail boundaries, CoW sources, store_ranges refactor, finish-time exclusion lift for issue vllm-project#52735):

  • Already in KK (with receipts): c29debe6e defer-stores-until-metadata-ready — KK's storable_chunks already returns min(num_chunks, num_allocated_chunks, num_keyed_chunks); 7cc9963db dcp_replicated tokens_per_block — KK's centralized resolve_dcp_kv_block_size already skips scaling for replicated specs; fa033bd4e defer-finalization — KK's finish flow (finished_signaled + store-job invariant) supersedes it.
  • Genuine gaps, deliberately NOT force-merged (every one conflicts against KK's evolved implementation; blind merges risk regressions in pinned-memory/allocator code that this environment cannot runtime-validate):
    • 3ba0d8e1d + 25a0ae51d + cf7976ce2 — lockstep MLA allocation subsystem (~800 lines: _use_lockstep_mla_allocation, shared_by contiguous tensors, external computed blocks for lockstep groups). Real gap; touches get_kv_cache_configs/coordinator/block_pool. Needs a coordinated port + GPU A/B.
    • 5c19d376b — shared CPU offload region hardening (1065 lines: pin/mmap fallback + retry-as-segments, unlink-after-worker-mappings, host_mem_ops registration retries). Real gap; pinned-memory paths need on-GPU validation.
    • f80fb5b45 — SWA/replay retention alignment (alignment_chunk_count, replay_alignment_tokens): real gap; deep merge into KK's store_ranges flow.
    • 36ac40cd3 — FS/obj tiering bounds + stale-load recovery + lockstep pending-job dedup: real gap; the lockstep-dependent parts require the subsystem above.

Verification status

All 24 touched files AST-validated; custom_all_reduce.py restored to the KK state (c7770ce dropped). No GPU/serve validation has been run — the symm-mem barrier + two-shot paths and the prompt-logprobs CPU accumulation especially need the standard KK A/B anchors (C1 decode, prefill, GSM8K) plus a prompt-logprobs memory regression check before a beta build.

SM120 is PCIe-only, where allreduce is far more expensive relative to
compute than on NVLink platforms. Measured on 4x RTX PRO 6000 at
hidden 4096: fused matmul+RS / AG+matmul crosses over plain
mm+allreduce between 512 and 1024 tokens (bf16) and reaches
1.35-1.66x at 1024-8192 tokens.

(cherry picked from commit fedd1fb)
The one/two-shot all-reduce kernels synchronize the group through
per-slot signal-pad exchanges with no notion of op instances, so their
device execution order must match the group issue order. vLLM issues
all-reduces from different streams across startup phases (profile,
compile warmup, cudagraph capture), which CUDA does not order across
streams; a second-scale rank skew then interleaves two barrier
instances and the group wedges permanently (pytorch/pytorch#189228).

Serialize every op of the communicator on a dedicated internal stream,
fenced with events against the caller's stream. Caller-transparent and
graph-capturable; validated on the previously-deadlocking multi-stream
repro (300 rounds clean, bitwise-correct).

(cherry picked from commit 68c2242)
torch's symmetric-memory signal-pad protocol (put_signal/wait_signal in
the one/two-shot all-reduce kernels) issues system-scope CAS directly
on peer-mapped memory. P2P read/write access does not imply atomic
support: on platforms without native P2P atomics
(cudaDevP2PAttrNativeAtomicSupported=0, e.g. PCIe-only multi-GPU
boxes) the CAS is not atomic, barrier tokens are lost or duplicated
under PCIe load, and the whole group wedges permanently. torch's
rendezvous performs no such capability check (pytorch/pytorch#189228).

Add CudaPlatform.has_native_p2p_atomics() (pairwise
NVML_P2P_CAPS_INDEX_ATOMICS, mirroring is_fully_connected) and refuse
to enable SymmMemCommunicator when any device pair in the group lacks
native atomics, falling back to NCCL.

Forensics on 4xRTX PRO 6000 (PCIe, no NVLink): completed two_shot
counts stay exactly aligned across ranks while a single orphaned
signal-pad token (one block, one rank pair, location wandering across
runs) wedges every subsequent barrier; per-call ring buffers show
byte-identical issue sequences on all ranks, ruling out ordering and
grid mismatches; nvidia-smi topo -p2p n reports NS for every pair.

The explicit add + plain rms_norm deviates from the fused-add residual
idiom, misses the fused kernel, and leaves the last MoE all-reduce
unmatched by the sequence-parallelism patterns: with enable_sp the
sharded residual meets a full-shape tensor and compilation fails with
a size mismatch (s72 vs s72//4).

…able

Ported from gilded-gnosis d188a80 (Martin Vit). An in-checkpoint draft
whose config advertises a larger max_position_embeddings than the target
would run past the target's effective RoPE table. Cap the draft's
max_position_embeddings to the target's when both come from the same
model, so MTP/Eagle-style in-checkpoint drafts stay within the target's
position range.
Ported from gilded-gnosis 348dd0b (Florian Bernd). Some clients (e.g.
Xcode AI assistants) send tools=[] unconditionally; rejecting them with
400s breaks OpenAI parity. An empty tools array now validates like an
omitted field, while a tool_choice that forces a call with zero tools
(named tool or required) is still rejected.
Ported from gilded-gnosis da89d3c (Luke Alonso), adapted. Prompt
throughput now accumulates scheduled context tokens per step
(SchedulerStats.num_scheduled_prompt_tokens via
compute_iteration_details), so chunked prefills are counted as each
chunk finishes rather than only when the request produces output.
Iteration-token tracking no longer double-counts prompt tokens.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request updates sequence-parallelism thresholds, speculative draft configuration, chat completion tool validation, symmetric-memory communication, HYV3 normalization, and scheduler prompt-token metrics.

Changes: SM120 sequence parallelism

Layer / File(s) Summary
SM120 threshold calculation
vllm/compilation/passes/fusion/sequence_parallelism.py, tests/compile/test_sequence_parallelism_threshold.py
Capability 120 uses a hidden-size threshold of 4096 and a per-GPU threshold of 2 MB. Tests check the resulting threshold and the minimum hidden-size boundary.

Speculative draft position limit

Layer / File(s) Summary
Same-model position limit cap
vllm/config/speculative.py, tests/config/test_speculative_draft_hf_overrides.py
When the target and draft reference the same model and the target position limit is lower, the draft limit is capped at the target limit. Tests cover this condition and cases where the limit remains unchanged.

Chat completion tool validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Empty tools and tool-choice validation
vllm/entrypoints/openai/chat_completion/protocol.py, tests/entrypoints/openai/chat_completion/test_empty_tools_validation.py
An empty tools array is treated as omitted for absent, auto, none, or null tool choices. Named and required choices without tools remain invalid. Tests also cover null and omitted tools.

Symmetric-memory communication

Layer / File(s) Summary
P2P capability check and stream-based all-reduce
vllm/platforms/cuda.py, vllm/distributed/device_communicators/symm_mem.py
CUDA platform implementations report whether device pairs support native P2P atomics. The communicator checks the process group’s physical device IDs and performs all-reduce operations on a dedicated stream, ordered with the caller’s stream.

HYV3 residual normalization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Residual combination in normalization
vllm/model_executor/models/hy_v3.py
HYV3Model.forward passes hidden states and residual directly to self.norm.

Scheduled prompt-token metrics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Prompt-token count from scheduling to logging
vllm/v1/core/sched/scheduler.py, vllm/v1/metrics/stats.py, vllm/v1/metrics/loggers.py
Scheduler statistics include the scheduled prompt/context-token count. The logger uses this count for prompt throughput instead of the computed prompt-token count from iteration statistics.

Angelos Hermes and others added 5 commits October 17, 2026 02:25
Ported from gilded-gnosis 9156bf5 (original author per GG history),
adapted to Karmic Kraken. Three memory-safety changes for prompt
logprobs:

- V2 PromptLogprobsWorker: accumulate chunk results into a pre-sized CPU
buffer per request instead of holding per-step GPU LogprobsTensors
until prompt completion (unbounded device memory for long or
concurrent prompts). Adds profile_run() so memory profiling accounts
for the prompt-logprobs workspace, and VLLM_PROMPT_LOGPROBS_CHUNK_SIZE
to bound the full-vocabulary logits rows materialized at once.
- V1 legacy runner: chunk the per-request logits computation (the
  one-shot [num_logits, vocab_size] materialization OOMs on
memory-dense profiles, upstream vllm-project#14239) and respect
logprobs_mode; also fixes a dangling 'logits' reference.
- get_kv_cache_configs: warn when num_gpu_blocks_override exceeds the
capacity implied by profiled available KV memory.

KK-specific adaptations: keeps LogprobsMode/compute_topk_scores
plumbing and KK's _pool_bytes_per_block(groups) signature.
The pipelined fused GEMM+comm ops (fused_matmul_reduce_scatter,
fused_all_gather_matmul and scaled variants) synchronize exclusively
through _SymmetricMemory.barrier(channel), whose CAS exchanges on
peer-mapped signal pads are not atomic on platforms without native P2P
atomics — the group wedges permanently under PCIe load, which is what
gated sequence parallelism off on SM120 PCIe boxes.

Add an opt-in (VLLM_SYMM_MEM_PCIE_SAFE_BARRIER) that swaps the barrier
for a stream-memops protocol: cuStreamWriteValue32 of a monotonic
sequence number into the receiver's pad (plain posted P2P write with
release semantics) plus cuStreamWaitValue32(GEQ) on the sender's own
pad (local polling). No remote read-modify-write; self-pairing
sequence numbers also remove the multi-stream instance-interleaving
hazard of the CAS design (pytorch/pytorch#189228).

The patched barrier refuses CUDA graph capture: its baked sequence
number would satisfy its own wait on replay without synchronizing
(the stock CAS barrier replays correctly). The fused ops only run at
sequence-parallel sizes above the cudagraph capture ceiling, so the
path is structurally unreachable today; the guard keeps a future
change from silently desynchronizing. Sequence state is keyed by the
handle's signal-pad address; reset_pcie_barrier_state() covers the
free-and-remap corner (see module docstring).

Validated on 4x RTX PRO 6000 (NativeAtomicSupported=0 everywhere):
both fused ops match unfused goldens (rel_err ~6e-3, bf16
reduction-order noise); 300 mixed rounds clean under H2D/D2H storms
with rank-skew stalls (the stock barrier wedges within ~25 rounds on
this profile); fused speedups intact at 8192x4096x4096 (mm+RS 1.55x,
AG+mm 1.80x vs unfused NCCL). End-to-end qualify with SP+fused on the
same box: first run hang-free, mean TTFT 0.94 s at concurrency 1
(restoring the async-TP level), gsm8k parity. CPU-only unit tests
cover the atomics platform query, slot addressing, sequence
monotonicity, write-before-wait ordering, and the capture guard.

…-allocation

torch's get_symm_mem_workspace() re-allocates and re-rendezvous's the
fused-op workspace whenever a caller requests more than the current
size, dropping the old workspace tensor with no synchronization of any
kind. Device-side work still targeting the old workspace — parked
barrier waits on its signal pads, in-flight P2P chunk copies from
peers — then polls freed/recyclable memory and can park its stream
forever. The growth decision is also per-rank local, so one rank can
free and re-map while a peer still has device work against the old
remote mapping.

Wrap the workspace getter (only when the PCIe-safe barrier is
installed) with two defenses:

* floor the first allocation (VLLM_SYMM_MEM_WORKSPACE_FLOOR_MB,
  default 256) so steady-state growth never happens;
* if growth does happen, log it, drain the device, and retire the old
tensor to a keep-alive list (bounded leak, rare) so parked device
  work keeps polling stable memory.

On a 4x SM120 PCIe box this converted a 100%-reproducible sustained-
load wedge (8/8 runs) into 8/8 clean for this mechanism. An upstream
torch report is being filed separately; this guard is correct (and
inert at steady state) regardless of when that lands.

…ring

torch's pipelined fused ops (_pipelined_produce_and_all2all,
_pipelined_multi_all_gather_and_consume) enqueue peer-memory
operations — signal-pad memops and P2P copies — concurrently from two
streams per process, and secure the kernel scheduling order their
cross-rank obligations depend on with a sleep-kernel nudge the source
itself only calls 'almost guarantee[d]'.

When the PCIe-safe barrier is installed, replace both pipelines with
comm-stream variants: every peer-memory operation is issued on ONE
stream per process, while producers/consumers (pure local kernels)
ride a second stream ordered by explicit CUDA events in both
directions (producer done -> comm may start; peers done reading ->
buffer may be overwritten). Compute/comm overlap is retained; the only
overlap given up is between P2P copies on different streams, which
torch's own comments note cannot overlap anyway.

Measured on 4x RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell (SM120, PCIe P2P), 8192x4096 @
4096x4096 bf16 vs unfused NCCL: matmul-reduce-scatter 1.78x (stock
dual-stream: 1.56x — explicit ordering also removes the stock path's
scheduling-miss degradation), all-gather-matmul 1.69x (stock: 1.78x);
end-to-end serving within noise of the stock pipelines at c1 and c32.

Motivation beyond hygiene: on this platform family we observe a
host-side wedge (all ranks parked inside libcuda enqueue calls) under
sustained load with the stock dual-stream shape; an A/B with only the
pipeline shape changed passes the same trigger with comm-stream
(details in the driver escalation; under investigation with the
NVIDIA driver team). Confining peer enqueues to one stream both
sidesteps that exposure and removes the undocumented scheduling-order
dependency.

Add capability-12.0 entries to the symm-mem all-reduce tables (64 MiB
cap, always two-shot: no multicast hardware), plus a 128 KiB floor
below which the input is handed back to the next backend — measured on
4x RTX PRO 6000, two-shot beats the NCCL ring 1.2-2x from its ~160 KB
crossover through 64 MB. Scope the multicast_ptr check to the multimem
kernels; the two-shot all-reduce runs on plain P2P mappings.

Only takes effect on platforms that pass the native P2P atomics gate
added in this PR.

Use a non-exception log call in NonNvmlCudaPlatform.has_native_p2p_atomics.

logger.exception appends a traceback for the active exception. No exception is active here, so the log shows a misleading NoneType: None traceback line. This matches the existing is_fully_connected pattern, but the new code repeats the defect. Use logger.warning instead.

Proposed fix
- logger.exception(
+ logger.warning(
"P2P atomics detection not possible, as context support was"
" not found. Assuming native P2P atomics are not available."
         )

177-190: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Record the stream use of inp and out on _comm_stream.

The code runs the copies on _comm_stream. The caller allocates out with torch.empty_like on the caller stream. The PyTorch caching allocator ties each block to its allocation stream. If a caller frees inp or out after the call, the allocator can reuse the block for another caller-stream kernel. That kernel is not ordered against the pending _comm_stream work in the same way. In practice current.wait_stream fences later caller-stream work, so the risk is limited. The risk grows if the caller drops inp before _comm_stream finishes, for example under CUDA graph capture or with other-stream tensors. Call inp.record_stream(self._comm_stream) and out.record_stream(self._comm_stream) if you must support tensors that outlive the call on other streams. Do not add them inside CUDA graph capture without checking compatibility.

In the all-reduce path using `_comm_stream`, record both `inp` and `out` on that
stream so their allocations cannot be reused before its work completes; ensure
the recording approach is compatible with CUDA graph capture rather than adding
unconditional calls there.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Skip prompt-token classification when stats are disabled.

compute_iteration_details runs before make_stats() checks self.log_stats. When logging is disabled, each update_from_output() still scans scheduled requests and allocates iteration details, then discards the result. Guard this calculation with self.log_stats to avoid extra work on the scheduler hot path.
