can we have a subcommand for introspection commands like these? we already have tons of toplevel commands and i can imagine at least a bunch more introspection commands for various purposes

This is supposed to be used by shell scripts to implement funky stuff (such as automatically getting the latest version of a package from which a git repo is known)
