The terminal engine renders a figure as its alt text, source path and caption, because a plain terminal cannot draw pixels. Terminals that implement a graphics protocol (Kitty, WezTerm, Ghostty, iTerm2) can show the image inline.
Deferred until the engine moves to Ink: an inline image would be a custom element writing protocol escapes into Ink's screen buffer, and whether that survives its line diffing has to be proven in a spike first. The fallback stays the text form everywhere else.
