PtionsPlus is a simple app for macOS. It lets you assign your extra mouse buttons to keyboard shortcuts. You can make these settings per app. This means your mouse buttons can work differently depending on what program you use. It replaces clunky vendor software with a clean, open-source tool.
- A Mac computer running macOS 10.14 or later
- Any mouse with extra buttons (like the Logitech MX Master)

This guide will help you download, install, and start using PtionsPlus. No programming needed. Follow each step carefully.

Click the big green Download PtionsPlus button at the top or visit the release page here:

On the release page, find the latest version of PtionsPlus. The version numbers look like “vX.X.X.”

Look for a file ending with
.dmg. This is the installer file for Mac. Click it to download. -
When the download finishes, open the
.dmgfile. This will mount it and open a new window. -
Inside the window, you’ll see the PtionsPlus app icon. Drag this icon into your Applications folder to install it.

Once copied, open your Applications folder and double-click PtionsPlus to start the app.

The first time you open PtionsPlus, macOS may ask you for permission to control your computer. This is needed for the app to work.
- Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy tab.
- Click Accessibility on the left panel.
- Click the lock icon at the bottom and enter your password to allow changes.
- Find PtionsPlus in the list and check the box next to it.

Restart PtionsPlus to apply these permissions.

The app will live in the macOS menu bar at the top-right of your screen.

Click the PtionsPlus icon to open the settings window.

Select which mouse buttons you want to remap.

Choose the keyboard shortcuts you want each button to perform.

You can create different settings for each app. For example, assign button 4 to copy in Word, but assign it to paste in your browser.

If PtionsPlus does not respond to your mouse buttons:
- Make sure you have given it accessibility permissions in macOS settings.
- Restart the app after granting permissions.

If the app won’t open after installing:
- Check your security settings. Sometimes macOS blocks apps from unidentified developers.
- Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General tab.
- Click “Open Anyway” for PtionsPlus if that option appears.

If your mouse buttons don’t work in certain applications:
- Verify you created a profile for that application in PtionsPlus.
- Check if the keyboard shortcuts are correctly set.
- You can reset all mappings to default from the main menu.
- Backup your settings by exporting your profile to a file.
- Import settings on other Macs by loading your saved profile.
- Use the log to monitor what shortcuts the app sends, helping to debug if something goes wrong.
