fix: raise consistent errors for invalid descending/reverse in sort and top_k - #4038
Conversation
…everse` lengths `sort` and `top_k` accept a per-column sequence for `descending` / `reverse`. When its length did not match `by`, the error came from whichever backend was in use, so the message differed between pandas, Polars, PyArrow and the SQL backends. Check the lengths in `BaseFrame.sort` and `BaseFrame.top_k` before dispatching, using the same wording as the existing `left_on`/`right_on` check in `join`.
📝 Walkthrough
Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to Generator and NumPy boolean direction flags are rejected or fail validation, contradicting the stated behavior. Typical boolean and list inputs are validated correctly. Fix this before merge or accept the narrow gap. Security Architecture Review

Thanks @Xyrro and welcome to Narwhals 🙌🏼
I left a couple of inline suggestions! On top of these, polars is checking for inner dtype if the lengths are checking:
data = {"a": [1, 3, 2], "b": [4, 4, 6]}
frame = pl.DataFrame(data)
frame.top_k(2, by=["a", "b"], reverse=["abc", "xcd"])results in:
TypeError: 'str' object is not an instance of 'bool'
while processing 'reverse'
(same for sort)
Arguably worth adding it here since we are adding validation
Move the check into `validate_bool_flags`, which mirrors Polars: the length error now reports both lengths, and non-bool items raise `TypeError`. NumPy booleans are still accepted, and the argument is materialised first, so one-shot iterables keep working.

Thanks for the review! Pushed ca970db:
Both checks are in a small helper in A few things change because of this, in case any is a problem:
One difference from Polars: it puts "while processing 'reverse'" in an exception note, which needs Python 3.11, so I put it on a second line of the message. |

Thanks for adjusting @Xyrro! I pushed a commit on top with a few simplifications:
- No numpy arrays or generators: descending/reverse are typed as
bool | Sequence[bool], and I don't see a realistic use case for anything else. A generator now fails the same way it does in Polars (object of type 'generator' has no len()). - No conversion:
validate_bool_flagsis now a plain check that returnsNone, so the backends receive the user's list unchanged, as they did before this PR. - Keyword-only arguments: I also dropped
match_name, since it was always by. - Removed
test_*_iterable: they covered the inputs we no longer accept. The*_length_mismatchand*_not_booltests still cover both errors.
On your stable question: raising for descending=[1, 0] is fine. Ints were never part of the annotation, Polars already rejects them, and the other backends only handled them through truthiness. The same goes for numpy arrays and generators.
I also fixed the PR title, which was cut off. Could you update the description? It still says only the message changes, and it lists two open questions that are now settled.
Approving, thanks again! 🙌🏼

array elements, normalizing accepted values to Python booleans. Ensure sort and
top_k pass the normalized flags to the backend.
- Line 2303: Update validate_bool_flags to materialize non-boolean flags before
checking their length and return the validated value, preserving boolean inputs.
In both callers, assign the helper’s return value back to descending or reverse
before backend dispatch so generator inputs are available for dispatch.

Description
DataFrame.sort/LazyFrame.sort(descending) andtop_k(reverse) now validate their flags inBaseFrame, before dispatching to the backend, and raise Polars' errors:Previously the error depended on the backend: pandas, PyArrow and the SQL backends each phrased it differently, and some surfaced
