🌐 Web query:
site:pandas.pydata.org/pandas-docs/version/1.5.3/reference/api/pandas.DataFrame.groupby.html sort=False ordered categorical group order first appearance category order
💡 Result:
For **pandas 1.5.3**, `sort=False` means group keys are **not sorted**; ordinary group keys then appear in first-appearance order. The docs also say row order within each group is preserved. ([pandas.pydata.org](https://pandas.pydata.org/pandas-docs/version/1.5/reference/api/pandas.DataFrame.groupby.html?utm_source=openai))
But the 1.5.3 API page does **not** clarify how `sort=False` interacts with an **ordered categorical** grouper. The explicit note that `sort=False` stops sorting ordered categorical values was added in **pandas 2.0.0**, so don’t assume that newer behavior applies to 1.5.3. Restore first-appearance order for categorical iteration.
When maintain_order=True on pandas versions before 2.0, groupby(sort=False) can order an ordered categorical key by category order. For ["b", "a", "b"] with categories ["a", "b"], PandasLikeGroupBy.__iter__ can therefore yield "a" before "b". The iterator groups the native frame directly and does not use the temporary row index. Attach that index before grouping, then order the yielded groups by its minimum position on these pandas versions.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Restore group order when order_by is absent.
With maintain_order=True, agg(nw.col("b").last()) can still return groups in last-row order. For example, keys ["a", "b", "b", "a"] select the last "b" row before the last "a" row. Pandas treats the underlying nth(-1) call as a filtration, so sort=False does not correct that order. Record the original row positions and restore first-appearance order for ordered aggregations without order_by too. (pandas.pydata.org)

Limit the PyArrow<14 xfail to first and last.
The sum, len, and multi-output mean cases can pass on PyArrow 13. With xfail_strict = true, they become XPASS failures, so the minimum-version PR test job can fail. Apply the xfail only to the first and last cases.

Description
Adds a
maintain_orderargument toDataFrame.group_by(eager only). WhenTrue, groups are returned in the order they first appear in the data, both fromaggand when iterating over the groups.maintain_orderthrough to the nativegroup_by.order_by(the frame gets sorted first). That case now uses the same row-index approach, aligned on the group keys sincelastreturns rows in order of last appearance. This should let plotly drop its workaround (plotly/plotly.py#5766).
