Thanks @lucaluo925 . The before/after table and the "Scope of the behaviour change" section made it easy to review.
On your question: please keep the full tightening rather than gating on not value.is_valid. Expressions should keep the dtype of their result, as Polars does, and the narrower version would still turn Int32 into Int64 and Datetime("ns") into Datetime("us").
While reviewing I found the same bug in a few sibling code paths the PR doesn't reach yet, plus one regression on older pyarrow. Since the PR is about keeping reduction dtypes on PyArrow, I think they belong here.
1. Sibling paths that still go through Python
import pyarrow as pa
import narwhals as nw
df = nw.from_native(pa.table({"a": pa.array([1, 2], pa.int32()), "i": [0, 1]}))
df.select(nw.col("a").any_value()).schema # Int64 (Polars: Int32)
df.select(nw.col("a").first().over(order_by="i")).schema # Int64 (Polars: Int32)
df.head(0).select(nw.col("a").first()).schema # Unknown (Polars: Int32)
nulls = nw.from_native(pa.table({"a": pa.array([None, None], pa.float64())}))
nulls.select(nw.col("a").skew()).schema # Unknown (Polars: Float64)-
ArrowSeries.any_valueignores_return_py_scalarand callsfirst()with its default, so it always converts to Python. Passing the flag through fixes it:ser = self.drop_nulls() if ignore_nulls else self return ser.first(_return_py_scalar=_return_py_scalar)
-
first/lastreturn a plainNoneon an empty column.nulls_like(1, self)[0]gives a typed null, and the Series API still returnsNone. (lit(None, self._type)also works, but it raises for extension types before pyarrow 18.) -
skew/kurtosisreturn a plainNonewhen nothing is left afterdrop_null:if len(ser_not_null) == 0: return maybe_extract_py_scalar(lit(None, pa.float64()), _return_py_scalar)
Deleting that branch also gives a typed null for numeric input, but then an all-null String column raises instead of returning
Nonelike Polars. -
ArrowExpr._over_without_partition_bybroadcasts withpa.repeat(s.item(), size), which goes back through Python.pa.repeat(s.native[0], size)matches what_align_full_broadcastalready does.
2. Extension types on pyarrow < 24
pa.array([scalar]) only accepts extension scalars from pyarrow 24 (I checked 13 through 25). On older versions nw.col("ext").first() now raises ArrowNotImplementedError, where main returned the storage type. I left a suggestion inline. tests/dtypes/pyarrow_extension_dtypes_test.py already has a custom_16 extension type to reuse, and the minimum-versions CI job (pyarrow 13) will exercise the old-version branch.
3. Tests
- The
modin_constructorxfail intest_string_reduction_keeps_dtype_when_all_nullis a strict XPASS: Modin returnsStringthere. CI only runsmodin[pyarrow], so it never shows up. The same applies to the str-namespace test. test_all_null_reduction_supports_str_namespacecan go. Once the test above it shows the dtype isString,.str.to_uppercase()works, so it adds nothing for PyArrow..lazy()beforecollect_schema()isn't needed:DataFrameandLazyFrameboth have it.- As CodeRabbit noted, the all-null invariant can't catch widening of non-null results, because both sides widen. I'd add two regression tests: one checks that
Series.<aggregation>returns a plain Python value, and one checks that Expr aggregations keepInt32andDatetime("ns"), both with values and on an empty frame. Drafts below. Against the current PR head, the second test fails on exactly the four sibling paths above. Against theis_validalternative, it fails on all 12 non-empty cases.
Not for this PR
pandas-like backends have the same symptom, for other reasons:
Seriesaggregations return numpy scalars orpd.NA.- Expr reductions lose the dtype on empty input.
pandas[pyarrow]widensInt32.
The exact behaviour varies across pandas and Modin versions, so the drafts skip pandas-like with a reason instead of a strict xfail. We'll track that separately.
Happy to push these to your branch if that's easier, just let me know.

Description
What
_from_scalarinsrc/narwhals/_arrow/series.pycalled.as_py()on thepa.Scalarreturned by the kernel. When a reduction goes through_reuse_serieswith_return_py_scalar=False, that scalar is typed — e.g.DoubleScalar(None)— and.as_py()throws the type away, so building a chunked array from[None]inferspa.null().This only shows up when the reduction has no value to return, i.e. on an all-null or empty column. Three consequences:
mean/min/max/std/var/medianon an all-null or emptyFloat64columnUnknownFloat64mean() + 1on an emptyFloat64columnInt64Float64(as Polars)max().str.to_uppercase()on an all-nullStringcolumnArrowNotImplementedError: Function 'utf8_upper' has no kernel matching input types (null)[None]selectandoveralso disagreed for the same expression:col("a").mean()gaveUnknownwhilecol("a").mean().over("i")gaveFloat64. They now agree.sumwas never affected — PyArrow sums an all-null column to a typed zero.Scope of the behaviour change
Dropping
.as_py()also changes non-null results, because the Python round-trip was widening narrow types by inference:max()on anInt32column:Int64→Int32(matching Polars).max()on aDecimal(5, 2)column: this depended on the value.[Decimal("1.50")]gavedecimal128(3, 2), inferred from the PythonDecimal's own digits; it now staysdecimal128(5, 2). With a wider value such as123.45in the column it was already correct.I think tightening these is the right outcome, but it is a visible change, so there is a narrower alternative: gate the new path on
and not value.is_valid, which fixes the null cases and leaves every non-null result byte-for-byte as it is today. I tested both; they are equivalent on the suite. Happy to switch to the narrow one if you would rather not take the type tightening in this PR — say which and I will push it.One smaller detail worth flagging: the check changes from
hasattr(value, "as_py")toisinstance(value, pa.Scalar). Anything that is not apa.Scalarbut happens to have anas_pymethod now falls through tosuper()._from_scalarinstead of being converted. The only callers are_compliant/expr.py:382and:795, which pass either a Python scalar or apa.Scalar, so this is unreachable today — but it is a semantic narrowing and not covered by a test. I did not add a thirdhasattrbranch as a safety net because the 100% branch coverage gate would then have an unreachable branch.Tests
New
tests/expr_and_series/reduction_null_dtype_test.pyasserts the invariant rather than hard-coding per-backend dtypes: the dtype of a reduction over an all-null column must equal the dtype of the same reduction over the populated column. The all-null column is built withwhen(<false>).then(col)rather thanlit(None, dtype=...), because on pandas-like backends the latter does not preserve the dtype and would hide what is being tested.xfails are scoped to what actually fails:
pandas[nullable],pandas[pyarrow],modin[pyarrow], excludingsum— an all-null reduction there yieldspd.NA, which carries no dtype, so the result comes back asString.Float64..strnamespace: the same, plus Dask.This PR also removes the
pyarrow_tablexfail ontest_floordiv_by_null_scalarindivision_by_zero_test.py, added in #4011 — its root cause was this bug, and it is anXPASS(strict)once the scalar keeps its type.Not in this PR
pandas-like backends have the same symptom from a different cause (
pd.NAandnancarry no dtype, so there is nothing to preserve), which is why the new tests xfail there. That needs its own fix and I would rather not mix it in here.Verification

They are the 200 ms per-example default colliding with coverage instrumentation on a laptop, not something this change introduces — the construction it replaces measures the same (pa.array([scalar])4.19 µs/call vspa.array([scalar.as_py()])4.29 µs/call over 20k calls). Happy to paste a full log if that is useful.In a Linux container, against
