`DataFrame.with_columns` on a 0x0 pandas-like or PyArrow frame raised a length-mismatch error when given a Series, while Polars returns a frame whose length is taken from the new columns. Route that case through the `select` path (`_select_from_series`), so the new series define the result length and scalar-like values broadcast to it; if every value is scalar-like the result has one row, matching Polars. `_select_from_series` skips `_align_full_broadcast` when every input is a broadcast scalar, which `select` could never hit but the 0x0 `with_columns` path can. pandas frames with an index but no columns keep their index. Closes narwhals-dev#3012 Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…n empty frame The `(0, 0)` early return added for narwhals-dev#3012 also fired for `with_columns()` with no expressions, rebuilding the frame and dropping pandas `columns.name` and pyarrow schema metadata. Only take that path when there are new columns, and move the pyarrow `native_frame` assignment next to the loop that uses it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Preserve Arrow schema metadata when adding columns.
If a (0, 0) Arrow table has schema metadata, this branch rebuilds the table through Table.from_arrays without passing that metadata. The result loses the input metadata. Preserve self.native.schema.metadata on the returned table. The no-expression metadata test does not exercise this branch. PyArrow documents a separate metadata argument for Table.from_arrays. Preserve duplicate-name replacement in the empty-frame path.
When duplicate-named expressions reach with_columns(...) on a (0, 0) dataframe, the new branches pass every series to _select_from_series, which validates column names and raises for duplicates.
The previous behavior differs by backend. The pandas-like path keeps the last series for each name. The Arrow path appends duplicate new names without validation because the empty frame has no existing names. The new path therefore changes both backends to a duplicate-name error.
Deduplicate the evaluated series by name before calling _select_from_series, while retaining the last series for each name.

Retain Arrow schema metadata when constructing columns on a zero-by-zero frame. Keep pandas last-value replacement and Arrow duplicate-column behavior specific to with_columns, without changing select validation. Co-authored-by: Codex <noreply@openai.com>

with_columns on completely empty DataFrames
Description
Issue: with_columns(...) is supposed to return a table with specific columns added/replaced. On a completely empty table, the pandas and PyArrow paths in Narwhals weren't handling it properly, because the existing logic treats the operation as adding data to a table, whose row count is already established. An empty table has no data to establish that shape. So new columns should establish the shape, then. This fix reuses Narwhals' pre existing table construction logic, from select(...), which builds a result from selected columns/expressions. We extracted that logic into a shared helper. with_columns(...) decides whether the original table has zero rows AND zero columns, and whether there are new columns to add. If yes, it builds the result from the new columns. If no, it uses the existing with_columns behaviour. That way tables that already have rows or columns keep their current behaviour.
