Description

Follows up on #3652: the *_VERSION constants in tests/utils.py are now packaging.version.Version objects instead of tuple[int, ...], and the ~530 comparisons across tests/ now read PANDAS_VERSION < PkgVersion("2.2") instead of PANDAS_VERSION < (2, 2).

What changed:

  • tests/utils.py: get_module_version_as_tuple -> get_module_version, returning a Version. A NOT_INSTALLED = Version("0.0.0") sentinel replaces the bare (0, 0, 0). narwhals._utils.parse_version is no longer used in tests (it's still used by narwhals itself).
  • Every tuple comparison in tests/ rewritten mechanically ((2, 2) -> PkgVersion("2.2"), (14,) -> PkgVersion("14"), etc.), plus MIN_PANDAS_NULLABLE_VERSION in conftest.py.
  • pyproject.toml: SIM300 (yoda-conditions) ignored for tests/*. Ruff considers PANDAS_VERSION (uppercase name) "more constant" than a call like PkgVersion("2.2"), so without this it auto-fixes every comparison into PkgVersion("2.2") > PANDAS_VERSION, which is much harder to read.
  • New test test_get_module_version_strips_pre_release in tests/utils_test.py.

Local testing

Ran pytest tests -n auto -p no:randomly on this branch and on main (macOS, pandas 3.0.6, polars 2.0.0):

passed skipped xfailed
main 12286 1567 643
this branch 12291 1567 643

The +5 passed are the new parametrized cases in test_get_module_version_strips_pre_release. Skipped and xfailed counts are identical, so no version gate changed which branch it takes. ruff check and ruff format --check are clean, and the pre-commit hooks pass.

  • No AI tools were used for this PR.
  • AI tools were used. Claude generated the initial diff (the regex-driven tuple -> PkgVersion("...") rewrite and the tests/utils.py changes). I reviewed every file, resolved the Version naming clash and the ruff SIM300 issue, and ran the full test suite and pre-commit hooks locally on my Mac before pushing.

📝 Walkthrough

The test suite now uses packaging.version.Version for dependency-version checks. Shared utilities parse installed module versions and use NOT_INSTALLED for missing dependencies. The test dependency, Ruff and coverage configuration, and a contributor example also change.

Changes: Dependency version checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse and normalize dependency versions
tests/utils.py, tests/utils_test.py
get_module_version returns parsed versions after removing prerelease and development suffixes. It returns NOT_INSTALLED when a module cannot be imported. Tests cover these cases.
Update compatibility gates across the test suite
tests/conftest.py, tests/dtypes/*, tests/expr_and_series/*, tests/frame/*, tests/series_only/*, tests/testing/*, tests/*.py, tests/hypothesis/*, tests/modern_polars/*
Version tuple comparisons become parsed version comparisons. Most thresholds and skip or xfail outcomes remain unchanged. The PyArrow categorical selector cutoff changes so version 15 no longer meets the expected-failure condition. The Polars histogram expected-failure range includes version 1.14.
Update test tooling and contributor example
pyproject.toml, CONTRIBUTING.md
The test dependency group adds packaging>=21.3. Ruff test-file ignores add SIM300, coverage exclusions change, and the contributor example compares parsed versions.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b1155

This change moves test version checks to parsed package versions. Four small test-hygiene concerns from earlier review remain open: one formatting issue and three missing xfail or skip reasons. These are low risk and can be fixed before or shortly after merge.

Explanation

Issue [#3652] requires packaging.version.Version in tests instead of tuple-based version handling. tests/utils.py now returns Version values and uses a zero-version Version sentinel. Version gates across tests/ and MIN_PANDAS_NULLABLE_VERSION use PkgVersion(...) comparisons. tests/utils_test.py covers missing modules and pre-release or development suffix handling. The reported full test run passed with unchanged skipped and xfailed counts.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue [#3652]. The dependency declaration, Ruff SIM300 setting, coverage patterns, contributor example, and focused tests support the Version migration. Updates to test gates remain connected to replacing tuple-based version handling. No production behavior changes are reported.

Thanks for tackling this @InessaPawson 🙌🏼

I went through this one a bit fast, and will come back to it. I spotted a few possible improvments:

  1. You initialize NOT_INSTALLED variable in tests/utils.py however then in many instances you are comparing against ... == PkgVersion("0.0.0") directly rather than ... == NOT_INSTALLED
  2. There are multiple cases of PkgVersion("x.0.0") and PkgVersion("x.y.0") than can be simplified to PkgVersion("x") and PkgVersion("x.y") respectively
  3. In CONTRIBUTING.md there is an example with comparing PANDAS_VERSION < (2, 0), could you change that using the same pattern as in the tests themselves via from packaging.version import Version as PkgVersion
  4. Can we add packaging in the tests dependencies rather than relying on it as a transitive dependency?

Thanks for bearing with me @InessaPawson 🙌🏼 I added a couple of commits, one if just a nitpick, the other was to fix a change I added to fix CI in #4078
