⚙️ Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure you have the following installed:

• Node.js >= 18.x
• npm (comes with Node.js)
• MongoDB — either a local instance or a free Atlas cluster

🚀 Local Installation & Setup

1. Clone the Repository

git clone https://github.com/niharika-mente/Product-Store.git
cd Product-Store

2. Install Dependencies

Install dependencies for the root project, backend, and frontend:

# Install root dependencies
npm install

# Install backend dependencies
cd BACKEND && npm install && cd ..

# Install frontend dependencies
cd FRONTEND && npm install && cd ..

3. Environment Variables

Create environment files for both the root project and the backend:

# Root environment
cp .env.example .env

# Backend environment
cp BACKEND/.env.example BACKEND/.env

Edit the files with your own values.

Backend .env

The backend requires additional environment variables such as:

JWT_SECRET=your-jwt-secret-change-in-production

Additional variables for Stripe, Cloudinary, OAuth providers, rate limiting, and Elasticsearch are documented in:

BACKEND/.env.example

Note: The backend requires additional environment variables (including JWT_SECRET) that are defined in BACKEND/.env.example. Refer to that file for the complete backend configuration. MONGO_URI can be obtained from MongoDB Atlas or a local MongoDB instance.

4. Start the Application

Run the backend server (with auto-reload via nodemon):

Start the application

npm run start

Docker Setup

Make sure Docker Desktop is installed and running.

Run with Docker

docker-compose up --build

Services

Service	URL

Stop Services

docker-compose down

npm run dev

In a separate terminal, start the frontend dev server:

cd FRONTEND && npm run dev

• The backend API runs at http://localhost:5000
• The frontend app runs at http://localhost:5173
