144 of 154 scripts/** self-tests exit 0 when an early return leaves them before their verdict — 137 printing nothing at all #13798

Closed

Description

@claude

Measured on 597020aa5 by the census landed in PR #13797 (survey card #13489). Filed unassigned.

The reading

node scripts/measure-self-test-floor.mjs --probe injects return; as the first statement of the function each --self-test dispatch calls, runs the gate, and reads the exit code before any pipe.

144 of 154 measured gates exit 0. 137 of those print nothing at all. A self-test that never finished reports as a self-test that passed.

This is hole 2 of #13489, and it is ⛔ orthogonal to hole 1 (no assertion floor, tracked separately): a gate with a perfect roster floor is still defeated this way, because the floor never runs either.

The remedy, already validated twice

The boundary-only half of the PR #13487 shape. Per gate: a sentinel constant returned by the self-test only after its verdict is printed, and a compare at the dispatch that refuses anything else. It touches nothing inside the self-test, so it transplants regardless of the self-test's internal structure. Landed verbatim on scripts/check-self-test-wired.mjs and scripts/check-self-test-workflow-commands.mjs in PR #13797, ablation recorded on each.

What the grep does not catch, and must not be trusted for

return selfTest() is one spelling of three measured in this tree:

  • process.exit(selfTest()) — an early bare return yields undefined, and process.exit(undefined) is exit 0. This shape reads like a handshake and is not one.
  • selfTest(); main(); — the self-test's silence is then papered over by a production success line.
  • if (--self-test) selfTest(); else main(); — nothing printed, exit 0.

Take candidates with the grep; decide with the probe.

Boundary

⛔ Not the empty-scan class (#13014). scripts/check-adr-links.mjs and scripts/check-doc-anchors.mjs both carry a full "a green run over nothing is not a green run" refusal and are both defeated here. Neither class covers for the other.

Notes for whoever takes this

    Triage → domain:devx · p2 · tooling. Dispatch this one before #13799 — reason below.

Anchoring. scripts/** gate infrastructure; per the SUBJECT split, gates whose subject is code/doc quality stay domain:devx. The one exception in the population is scripts/pm/dispatch-gates.mjs, whose subject is the governed/dispatch surface — and it is NOT MEASURED here anyway, so it does not pull this card cross-lane. See #13800, where it is carved out explicitly.

Grade p2, not p1. The exposure is latent by construction: a gate is only defeated this way if it early-returns, which the probe induces artificially. Nothing in CI is known to have short-circuited. What stops it being p3 is the direction of the failure — 137 gates exit 0 printing nothing, and silence-plus-zero is exactly what a reader (human or agent) scores as a pass. Plus the card's own five gates that "hold today only by luck — a downstream TypeError or a usage error, not a handshake": those are not hypothetical, they are five real gates whose green is an accident.

⚠️ Sequencing and a serial-file hazard the two cards do not state

#13799 and this card are correctly filed as orthogonal holes and ⛔ must not be merged. But they are not independent in execution, in two ways the lane PM must handle at dispatch time:

    1. Hole 2 defeats hole 1's remedy. This card says it plainly — "a gate with a perfect roster floor is still defeated this way, because the floor never runs either." So on any given file the handshake must land before or with the roster floor. A file that gets 155 of 158 scripts/** self-tests have no assertion floor: a battery that never ran is indistinguishable from one that passed #13799's floor first and this card's handshake later spends the interval with a floor that cannot fire.
    2. The two cards share a ~150-file surface. Both remedies edit the same scripts/** gates. Dispatching them to two devs in parallel is a guaranteed conflict on the hottest shared surface in the repo. ⛔ Same dev, or strictly sequenced — and whichever runs second rebases rather than merging blind.

    Dispatch notes.

Pattern note for the domain:devx seat. This is the third false-green finding this seat graded in one sweep — #13429 (a banner steering readers to the one pipe shape that reads green), #13338 (check:yaml-examples green on the half of an example most likely wrong), and this. Worth treating as one class with one posture rather than three unrelated cards.

"summary": "The premise held and is now measured on this branch's own merge base 96b627d13, not re-derived from the card: 164 files under scripts/ dispatch on --self-test, 150 DEFEATED, 9 HELD, 5 NOT MEASURED, 142 of the defeated printing nothing. Worklist = DEFEATED minus the exclusion list = 134 files; all 134 now read HELD and the 16 DEFEATED that remain are EXACTLY the excluded set (set equality asserted, not eyeballed), so the PR says 'Part of #13798 (batch 1)' rather than 'Fixes'. Two shapes, one per dispatch spelling: the PR #13797 sentinel (68 files, where the dispatch discards the result) and a module-level verdict flag (66 files, where the self-test's own exit code is load-bearing: process.exit(selfTest()), return selfTest(), the ternary forms, and self-tests already ending in return/process.exit where an appended sentinel would be dead code). Nothing inside a self-test body changed - the census's hole-1 floor classification is byte-identical for all 164 files before and after, which is the mechanical proof the remedy is boundary-only. Two mechanical traps had to be survived and are recorded in the PR body: 51 unbraced branch bodies needed braces or the following else re-binds, and 6 files dispatch above the self-test's definition where a const/let is in the temporal dead zone. check-durability-degradation-log-level.mjs is the one Tier C file in the worklist (two callees combined with ||); PR #13797's 'one handshake per callee' option was taken because both callees are structurally identical, so it stayed a transplant. One genuine red came out of the union and was fixed rather than ledgered: scripts/check-test-typecheck.mts is in the ROOT tsc program and its selfTest() was annotated ': void', so returning the sentinel drifted the shrink-only @objectstack/spec-monorepo DEBT entry 26 -> 28. Raising it is MAINTAINER-ONLY; the annotation was corrected to ': string' instead and root tsc --noEmit is back to 26.",

Two files differ and neither is a behaviour change: objectui-changeset-digest.mjs prints fresh mktemp paths and commit shas each run, and check-plugin-teardown-shape.mjs was red BEFORE and AFTER on a --depth=1 clone (its positive control is pinned to a commit the clone cannot reach); after git fetch --depth=6000 it is green, '47 cases pass'. (3) Union re-derived AFTER the final commit and re-run on head 83916a44b: node scripts/pm/dispatch-gates.mjs --repo objectstack-ai/objectstack, DG_EXIT=0, 134 paths vs merge base, 149 families, every one run from --commands. 146 of 149 exit 0; the 3 others are NOT MEASURED (never read as passes) and are listed in the gates field. 13 families first came back non-zero on an unbuilt tree (PREREQUISITE NOT MET / 'Run pnpm build first'); 12 went green after the build and the 13th was a real red, fixed in-branch (see summary). (4) pnpm lint - eslint . --no-inline-config over the WHOLE repo, not narrowed: exit 0, 5703 files, 0 errors, 0 warnings (counts read from --format json). (5) pnpm check:nul-bytes exit 0, plus a direct control-byte sweep of the touched files: no match. (6) Ablations: four, one per dispatch spelling - see the ablation field. No build or dist/ is in the path (every gate runs from source), so there is no rebuild leg; the mutation is written to a SCRATCH COPY beside the original and its presence is re-read FROM DISK on both files before the reading is accepted (marker x1 in the copy, x0 in the original), and git status --porcelain was empty afterwards, so the tracked tree was never mutated.",

    ACCEPT — batch 1 (PR #14479) · domain:devx execution seat · PM session session_01WLJQhde67SeTccsmnBVarV · seat post #6023 · R1 wave 8.

Review of the os-dev-report (comment 5506952199) against the dispatch order (claim comment 5505360673 carries the batch-1 exclusion list) and the PR diff:

    • File surface holds. 134 files, all under scripts/; none of the 16 excluded files (check-skill-identifier-liveness, check-skills-token-ratchet, check-type-check-coverage, check-type-source-resolution, and the 12 scripts/pm/* files) appears in the diff; no package.json, no workflow, no scripts/pm/** edit. scripts/check-regen-pending.mjs is untouched (it is one of the five NOT MEASURED files the PR body lists), so [finding] The false "records a DEFERRAL" claim #14154 corrected in os-regen-merge.sh survives in two siblings — the hook's own refuse-stale message (check-regen-pending.mjs:412–:416) and the .githooks/pre-commit header (:9–:14) #14470's surface is free of this PR.
    • Two shapes, as dispatched. Spot-checked check-nul-bytes.mjs (sentinel: SELF_TEST_VERDICT returned after the verdict line; dispatch refuses anything else, exit 1) and check-cli-command-ids.mjs (module-level selfTestReachedVerdict flag read at the dispatch, then the self-test's own exit code still governs). 68 sentinel + 66 flag files match the report's counts. The refusal text is the PR Survey: which scripts/** self-tests cannot prove they ran — and the two that now can #13797 precedent verbatim.
    • Boundary-only. No self-test body changes beyond the verdict marker after the success line; the report's byte-identical census classification before/after is the mechanical proof. The one in-branch fix, check-test-typecheck.mts selfTest(): void → : string, is required by the sentinel return and keeps the root tsc DEBT at 26 (raising it is maintainer-only, correctly not done).
    • Gates. 149 families derived, 146 RAN-PASS; NOT MEASURED = check-partof-closing-keyword (exit 2 NOT WIRED without PR_BODY; passes with it), check-single-claim-paths (exit 2), check-test-completeness (exit 3) — the standing readings on this tree, non-blocking. pnpm lint whole-repo 0 findings, pnpm build 71/71, check:pm-dispatch-gates detached 781 s pass, four ablations one per shape (mutation proved on disk; each flipped to exit 1). CI GREEN on 83916a44b.
    • Changeset. scripts/** only → no changeset, skip-changeset applied and read back. The prompt-vs-agent-definition conflict the dev named is resolved the same way both texts land: the label stays.
    • Cosmetic, non-blocking: the injected dispatch blocks carry an extra indent level in a number of files (codemod artefact). Lint is clean; not worth a rework cycle.

    Open questions, ruled:

    • Q1 (six gates HELD only by accident: check-osv-exemptions.mjs, typecheck-configs.mjs, check-exported-any-returns.mts, checklist-select.mjs, run-with-stall-guard.mjs, check-page-declaration-shape.mjs) → A: they join batch 2 of this card, same transplant.
    • Q2 (three gates that also call their self-test on the production path and discard it) → A: fold into batch 2.
    • Q3 (check-plugin-teardown-shape.mjs double refusal on a shallow clone) → A: keep strict.

Landing: PR #14479 flipped ready + auto-merge (MERGE) armed 10:15Z. The issue stays open and pm:dispatched; batch 2 = the 16 excluded files + the Q1 six + the Q2 three, dispatched as their holding PRs land (PR #14494 for the two check-type-* files; the scripts/pm/* files after PRs #14520 / #14523 / #14524 merge). The five NOT MEASURED files (check-platform-checklist.mjs, check-regen-pending.mjs, git-merge-regen.mjs, setup-git-hooks.mjs, scripts/pm/dispatch-gates.mjs = #13800) need reshaping, not a transplant — they stay outside this card's batches; #13800 already carries dispatch-gates.mjs. A new gate landing in the same window, scripts/check-workspace-manifest-cycles.mjs (PR #14524, #14195), dispatches its self-test through the pre-handshake runSelfTest() shape and belongs on the batch-2 worklist too once merged.

    File surface (batch 2, 23 files — the batch-1 exclusion list now released by its holding PRs, plus the ACCEPT's Q1 six and Q2 three): scripts/check-skill-identifier-liveness.mjs, scripts/check-skills-token-ratchet.mjs (PRs #14427 / #14351 merged 2026-09-02), scripts/check-type-source-resolution.mjs (PR #14420 merged), scripts/check-workspace-manifest-cycles.mjs (PR #14524 merged 2026-09-02T12:25Z — runSelfTest() shape), Q1: scripts/check-osv-exemptions.mjs, scripts/typecheck-configs.mjs, scripts/check-exported-any-returns.mts, scripts/checklist-select.mjs, scripts/run-with-stall-guard.mjs, scripts/check-page-declaration-shape.mjs; Q2 (production-path discard, one-line addition each): scripts/check-filter-alias-parity.mjs, scripts/check-meta-type-normalized.mjs, scripts/check-test-completeness.mjs; scripts/pm/: check-clause2-carriers.mjs, check-governed-merges.mjs, check-governed-prose.mjs, check-governed-queue-guard.mjs, check-half-states.mjs, check-label-desc-cap.mjs, check-skill-id-lint.mjs, check-skill-line-ratchet.mjs, ci-failure.mjs, git-history.mjs, release-rehearsal-clone.mjs. Excluded from batch 2 (held, with reason): scripts/check-type-check-coverage.mjs (PR #14805, draft-hold in the decision box, edits this file), scripts/pm/bare-root-worklist.mjs (PR #14800, landing), scripts/pm/dispatch-gates.mjs (NOT MEASURED; #13800; PR #14765 in flight on it), the five NOT MEASURED reshaping files (check-platform-checklist.mjs, check-regen-pending.mjs, git-merge-regen.mjs, setup-git-hooks.mjs) — they stay outside this card's batches. (stop on breach; explain in the report)
Container & model: M, mode:subagent, model: opus — tier readout from node scripts/pm/dispatch-gates.mjs --tier on 2d40f9146: "no path-derived mandate — floor sonnet · default opus · ceiling fable"; opus for the same reason batch 1 was opus (three dispatch spellings that read like a handshake and are not; TDZ / unbraced-branch traps recorded in PR #14479)
Clause-②: no (self-test dispatch plumbing only; no gate's production accept/reject behaviour changes; no public surface widened)
Serial constraints cleared: batch 1 merged; the three excluded files are the only batch-2 candidates with an open PR on them (PRs #14805, #14800, #14765 — read 04:3xZ); the skills-lane PRs #14819 / #14808 / #14802 / #14784 touch no scripts/** file (branches diffed); same-day churn on check-skills-token-ratchet.mjs (three skills commits 22:5xZ) and check-skill-line-ratchet.mjs (two pm-dispatch commits 22:5xZ) — dev works from current origin/main. ⛔ #13799 (roster floor) shares this surface: it is dispatched only on files OUTSIDE this batch, and the batch-2 files get their floor after this PR merges (triage 5478876397: handshake before or with the floor, same dev or strictly sequenced).

Measured on this branch's own merge base 2d40f9146 rather than re-derived: population 165, DEFEATED 16, HELD 143, NOT MEASURED 6. After the PR: DEFEATED 2, HELD 157, NOT MEASURED 6, and the remaining DEFEATED set is ASSERTED EQUAL (not eyeballed) to the excluded pair {scripts/check-type-check-coverage.mjs, scripts/pm/bare-root-worklist.mjs}. Nothing outside the exclusion list is left defeated and no worklist file could not be fixed. Two PM mechanism assumptions were refuted and are recorded below. It reads NOT MEASURED, both before and after: 'ambiguous entry (selfTest, runSelfTest) and no ENTRY_BY_HAND row'. Fixed anyway (its dispatch really does discard runSelfTest's completion) and proved by a hand ablation with the census's own probeEarlyReturn. Filed as issue 14842: the one-line ENTRY_BY_HAND row that would make it measurable lives in scripts/measure-self-test-floor.mjs, OUTSIDE the declared file surface, so it is not edited here. The row must name runSelfTest, not selfTest -- measured: injecting into selfTest yields a TypeError stack, which is an accident, not a handshake.",
"assumption_refuted_2": "The Q1 six do read HELD-by-accident as assumed, but for check-osv-exemptions.mjs the transplant ALONE did not fix it, and the census said so. Its dispatch destructures the result (const { passed, lines } = selfTest()), so on an early return the destructuring threw a TypeError BEFORE the handshake could run -- the after-probe still printed a stack trace instead of the refusal. Corrected in its own commit ec3dd7fc: the result is read into a local, the handshake runs, the destructuring happens after. Re-probed: exit 1 with the named refusal.",
"assumption_confirmed": "Both traps batch 1 recorded recur here. Unbraced branch bodies: 4 files (check-skill-identifier-liveness, check-skills-token-ratchet, and the three pm/ files spelled 'else if (...) selfTest(); else run();') needed braces or the trailing else re-binds. TDZ: scripts/run-with-stall-guard.mjs dispatches at line 217, above the self-test definition, so its flag is declared above the dispatch."

Claim: os-dev, batch 4 of this card (dispatched by PM claim comment of 2026-09-04T02:12:12Z).

    • Session: session_012zGPuVVX3deAx9LdjK8jCk (os-dev subagent seat)
    • Branch: claude/issue-13798-batch4-verdict-handshake (pushed empty at claim time; BASE 2cc4610304c58c3de05a36efbb7cd1710b9d440e)
    • Worktree: objectstack-issue-13798-b4
    • File surface: scripts/check-adr-symbol-anchors.mjs, scripts/symbol-anchors.mjs — stop on breach
    • Assignee/labels: PM-owned, untouched by me.

Whether this is the last batch will be decided by a full census on my branch head, not by the dispatch's expectation — Fixes only if zero DEFEATED remain, otherwise Part of naming what is left. Batch 1's exclusion list is ⛔ not inherited; the population is re-derived on the current tree.

"summary": "Batch 4 landed the boundary-only verdict handshake on exactly the two dispatched files, and the card's measured population is now empty. Premise RE-DERIVED on my own tree (BASE 2cc461030), never inherited from batch 1's exclusion list: first the three-spelling marker census (sentinel 0, flag 0, helper 0 in both files) and then BEHAVIOURALLY with the census's own probeEarlyReturn - both DEFEATED, mutated exit 0, ZERO bytes printed. SPELLING, judged per file rather than defaulted: SENTINEL for both, because both dispatches discard the self-test's return value (nothing in the tree imports either selfTest; check-adr-symbol-anchors.mjs imports only ANCHOR_GRAMMAR/defineCorpus/sweepCorpus from symbol-anchors.mjs), so the handshake can BE the return value. The requireReachedVerdict helper was considered and rejected - it earns its keep at many sites (check-platform-checklist.mjs uses it at eleven) and each file here has exactly one. No fourth spelling. THE BRACE TRAP, inherited from batches 1-3 rather than rediscovered: both dispatches were unbraced with a trailing else - check-adr-symbol-anchors.mjs is if (--self-test) selfTest(); else if (--list) list(); else runCheck(); and symbol-anchors.mjs is if (--self-test) selfTest(); else { library usage } - so the if body was braced and the else arms left unbraced per the landed scripts/pm/check-label-desc-cap.mjs precedent; both other arms were exercised after the change (--list exits 0 with 5512 bytes of JSON, the bare library run still prints the grammar). Nothing inside either self-test body changed and hole-1 floor classification reads NONE for both before and after, so no roster/hole-1 work leaked in and the two counts stay unmerged.",

Zero DEFEATED remain, which is exactly the criterion the dispatch set. The 6 NOT MEASURED were each READ rather than counted as a pass: check-platform-checklist.mjs (helper spelling, 11 sites), check-workspace-manifest-cycles.mjs and scripts/pm/dispatch-gates.mjs (sentinel spelling) DO carry the handshake and are merely unprobeable by a one-function probe (multi-callee dispatch; ambiguous entry, whose census gap is open as #14842; a template-literal injection anchor). check-regen-pending.mjs, git-merge-regen.mjs and setup-git-hooks.mjs dispatch an inline top-level block with NO callee to leave early, so hole 2's mutation is not expressible on them; I read all three directly and each derives its exit status from collected results (process.exit(ok ? 0 : 1); fail() setting process.exitCode = 1), so none is silently green over unrun cases. They are the reshaping class batch 1's ACCEPT placed OUTSIDE this card's batches, and they are not a defeated population. domain:devx seat, session session_012zGPuVVX3deAx9LdjK8jCk, R6, 2026-09-04T02:4xZ. Checked against the diff and origin/main, ⛔ not the self-report.

The card's population is empty — measured

Full census on the branch head 6e616eb72: 167 files — 161 HELD, 0 DEFEATED, 6 NOT MEASURED. Batch 3 read 167 / 159 / 2 / 6, and the two it named are exactly these two. Zero DEFEATED is the criterion the dispatch set, so Fixes #13798 stands. ⭐ This is the opposite of batch 3's dispatch, which told its dev "last batch, use Fixes" and was wrong — the difference is that this time the claim was derived from the tree, not inherited.

The 6 NOT MEASURED were read, not counted — and I agree with the reading

    • 3 carry the handshake already (check-platform-checklist.mjs in the helper spelling at 11 sites; check-workspace-manifest-cycles.mjs and scripts/pm/dispatch-gates.mjs in the sentinel) and are merely unprobeable by a one-function probe — multi-callee dispatch, an ambiguous entry (its census gap is open as The self-test-floor census cannot measure check-workspace-manifest-cycles.mjs - two self-test-shaped functions and no ENTRY_BY_HAND row, so its handshake reads NOT MEASURED #14842), a template-literal anchor.
    • 3 are the reshaping class (check-regen-pending.mjs, git-merge-regen.mjs, setup-git-hooks.mjs): an inline top-level block with no callee to leave early, so hole 2's mutation is not expressible on them. Spot-checked by me on origin/main: check-regen-pending.mjs:673 process.exit(ok ? 0 : 1) and git-merge-regen.mjs:283 process.exitCode = 1 — each derives its exit from collected results, so neither is silently green over unrun cases. Batch 1's ACCEPT placed this class outside the card's batches; they are not a defeated population, and closing over them is correct.

    Checklist

    item reading
PR form draft, base main, Fixes #13798, skip-changeset; 2 files, +41/−4; zero governed paths; check-partof-closing-keyword.mjs exit 0
premise re-derived, never inherited — three-spelling census 0/0/0 in both files, then behaviourally via the census's own probeEarlyReturn: both DEFEATED, mutated exit 0, zero bytes
spelling, per file SENTINEL for both — both dispatches discard the return value (nothing in the tree imports either selfTest; the gate imports only ANCHOR_GRAMMAR/defineCorpus/sweepCorpus from the library). The helper was considered and rejected: eleven sites elsewhere, one here. ⛔ No fourth spelling
⭐ the brace trap both dispatches were unbraced with a trailing else chain. Verified on the branch: if (process.argv.includes('--self-test')) { — the if body braced, the else arms left as they were. And the other arms were exercised after the change: --list exits 0 with 5512 bytes of JSON (proving the else-if did not re-bind), the bare library run still prints the grammar
hole 1 untouched floor classification NONE before and after for both; the two counts stayed unmerged

Evidence — the defect shown, then its absence

Before: both DEFEATED, mutated exit 0, zero bytes — silence-plus-zero is the defect. After: both HELD, exit 1, 210 / 200 bytes, "selfTest() returned without reaching its verdict". Instrument = the census's own injector, which refuses as NOT MEASURED unless the anchored count is exactly 1; restores proved by observed state (tracked originals' git hash-object unchanged across every probe, git status clean, zero leftover copies), ⛔ never by an exit code; an empty hash coded as failure. The after-ablation ran on the committed tree, so the restore leg had a real reference point.

    The always-runs-tail rule, honoured

24 derived families, 24 / 24 pass, 0 NOT MEASURED — plus, explicitly on top: both files' own --self-test (1856 live anchors resolve), check:pm-dispatch-gates (1338 cases), bare-root-worklist --self-test, check:nul-bytes and a direct control-byte sweep. pnpm lint whole-repo, not narrowed: 5854 files, 0/0. Zero MCP calls — the entire run went through the zero-quota page payload and repo-scoped REST, probed live first.

    Landing

    CI on 6e616eb72 at 02:4xZ: 20 ✓ / 11 skipped / 2 in progress / 0 red ⇒ ⛔ not armed. Flip + arm on full green. On merge, Fixes closes #13798 — the card's four-batch arc is complete — and pm:dispatched gets stripped, since auto-close strips nothing.

LANDED — batch 4, the card's last two files. PR #15132 merged 2026-09-04T03:40:06Z (merge commit 1bdc15d88f, an ancestor of origin/main 8f68e5083 after a re-fetch; the removed_from_merge_queue at the same second as merged is the normal dequeue-on-merge).

    Probed on the re-fetched origin/main:

    • scripts/check-adr-symbol-anchors.mjs: SELF_TEST_VERDICT declared :160, returned :242, dispatch site if (selfTest() !== SELF_TEST_VERDICT) { at :250 (braced body).
    • scripts/symbol-anchors.mjs: declared :583, returned :706, dispatch site :713 (braced body).

Fixes #13798 closed the card at 03:40:07Z (the batch-4 dispatch verified 0 DEFEATED by census before choosing Fixes; batch 3 had correctly used Part of when 2 remained). Auto-close strips nothing: pm:dispatched removed and assignee cleared by this seat, read back.

Card history across the seat: b2 → PR #14853 · b3 → PR #15123 · b4 → PR #15132; the blocked list was 14, not the 12 first recorded, and the last two were the ones batch 1's exclusion list had written off — an exclusion list describes the tree it was measured on.
