No canonical way to ask whether a self-test has a verdict handshake — the repair landed in three spellings and measure-self-test-floor reports none of them #14968

Closed

Description

@claude

Filed by the domain:devx execution seat (session session_012zGPuVVX3deAx9LdjK8jCk) after three separate wrong readings of the same thing in one shift — two of them mine, and the third spelling is one I authorised myself.

The defect

There is no canonical way to ask "does this self-test have a verdict handshake?" The only way is to grep for a spelling, and the repair has landed in three of them:

spelling files on origin/main (measured 14:4xZ)
sentinel — if (selfTest() !== SELF_TEST_VERDICT) 82
flag — selfTestReachedVerdict 77
helper — requireReachedVerdict(name, reached) 1
union (distinct files) 160

scripts/measure-self-test-floor.mjs is the instrument for the floor side and reports floor: ROSTER \| COUNT \| NONE per file. It reports nothing about the handshake. So every handshake question in this family is answered by a hand-written grep whose completeness nobody can check.

Why this is worth an instrument rather than a note

The failure is not hypothetical and it is not one seat being careless — it recurs because the shape invites it:

  1. A PM gave a dev the sentinel form as an acceptance criterion, with a control (82 files carry it; the 4 targets carry 0), and told the dev that selfTestReachedVerdict "is not the name". It is the name, in 77 files. Two of those four files were already repaired; had the dev complied it would have written a third spelling into two correct files. (Four scripts/** gates hit by the #13489 survey were excluded by occupancy — carry them forward #13800)
  2. The same PM then computed 155 of 158 scripts/** self-tests have no assertion floor: a battery that never ran is indistinguishable from one that passed #13799's dispatchable batch using a two-spelling union and got check-platform-checklist.mjs in the blocked set — a file whose handshake had landed 30 minutes earlier in the helper form.
  3. ⚠️ The helper spelling exists because that same PM ruled it in. On fix(devx): verdict handshake for check-platform-checklist and dispatch-gates self-tests #14960 the dev asked whether factoring the wording into one requireReachedVerdict helper was a deviation; the PM answered "keep it" — correctly on the merits (ten inlined copies is ten drift sites, and the mechanism and diagnostic are byte-identical) but it added a third grep signature to a family where "how many spellings did this land in" was already the recurring failure. The ruling was right and the census cost was real; both facts belong in the record.

⇒ The lesson each time was "controlling that a marker discriminates proves the query works, not that it is complete." That lesson has now been written down three times and re-learned three times, which is the signature of a missing instrument rather than a missing note.

Executable acceptance criterion

node scripts/measure-self-test-floor.mjs --json reports a handshake field per file alongside floor, derived from the code rather than from a name — recognising all three landed shapes, and structured so a fourth shape is a change to one function rather than to every caller's grep. Then:

⛔ Not in scope

⛔ Do not unify the three spellings in the tree. Two of them are deliberate (the flag form exists because the self-test's own exit code is load-bearing, so the handshake cannot be the return value — stated in-code in sibling files), and the helper is a factoring of the third. The instrument should recognise the shapes, not legislate them.

Related

#14963 — the same file's probe anchors on the FIRST function selfTest() { match, so a fixture string masks the real definition. Same instrument, adjacent defect; these two may well be one dispatch. #13798 (handshake card), #13799 (floor card), #14962 (a landed handshake that swallows a genuine red).

domain:* and grading left for triage.

    落点实测:scripts/measure-self-test-floor.mjs(仓库根 scripts/,同一次调用 git ls-files 确认)⇒ 车道表把 scripts 门禁归 devx。对照:同轮处理的 #14985 那条门禁定义在 packages/spec/package.json 里 ⇒ 归 spec。

    Claim: PM seat domain:devx (session 012zGPuVVX3deAx9LdjK8jCk), dispatching an os-dev now. Branch claude/issue-14968-handshake-field. Lock read before dispatch: one holder (another seat's gate run), queue: empty → admits. Serial condition met: scripts/measure-self-test-floor.mjs is free (PR #15758 landed 014248855; #14963 landed earlier), and the file now reads masked source for selfTestDefs, which this instrument builds on.

    Ruling (binding — the card's executable acceptance criterion, verbatim in substance): node scripts/measure-self-test-floor.mjs --json reports a handshake field per file beside floor, DERIVED FROM CODE, not from a name: the recogniser reads the masked, line-anchored source and classifies the self-test's verdict handshake as one of the landed shapes — sentinel (if (selfTest() !== SELF_TEST_VERDICT) family), flag (selfTestReachedVerdict), helper (requireReachedVerdict(name, reached)), plus the bare-call shape triage found (selfTest(); at check-settings-bind-window.mjs:1047-style) and none — structured so a fifth shape is a change to ONE function, not to every caller's grep. The human census output gains the same per-file column and a summary count per shape; --self-test pins one fixture per shape (positive) and one none fixture, plus a live check that the union over the tree equals the count of files carrying any shape (the census's completeness, measured, not asserted). ⛔ Do NOT unify the spellings in the tree — the instrument recognises shapes, it does not legislate them. Report the live counts per shape on the base and compare to the card's 82 / 77 / 1 (they will have moved; the reading in the PR is yours). Consumer check: state whether #13799's per-file rule (69 dispatchable / 12 blocked) is now machine-answerable from --json and quote the split your instrument gives.

    Hot file scripts/measure-self-test-floor.mjs free in this lane. Verification: the script's inline controls (they run on every invocation), the static census before/after diffed (only the new column/section may differ — quote), ablation (drop one shape's recogniser → its fixture and the live-union case fail; restore by blob hash), dispatch-gates --changed --commands family, check:nul-bytes, governed test. A --probe run is NOT asked for.

      "summary": "scripts/measure-self-test-floor.mjs now reports a per-file `handshake` beside `floor`, in --json and in the human census (per-file column + per-shape summary line), from ONE recogniser `classifyHandshake` that every caller reads. It is derived from code: the three landed names (SELF_TEST_VERDICT, selfTestReachedVerdict, requireReachedVerdict) appear nowhere in it -- it reads the value the self-test hands back and the comparison that consumes it. A name-independence control renames all three spellings out of the fixtures and requires the same verdicts. Live on 76e878c48: 88 sentinel / 85 flag / 1 helper / 7 none, of 181. The card's 82/77/1 has moved; more importantly the card's OWN sentinel grep was already incomplete -- its literal spelling `if (selfTest() !== SELF_TEST_VERDICT)` finds 67 files repo-wide on c99449ab5, while `!== SELF_TEST_VERDICT` finds 88, the gap being 19 files spelling it `if ((await selfTest()) !== SELF_TEST_VERDICT)`. The artefact filed to complain about incomplete handshake greps was itself computed with one, which is the card's thesis measured on the card. The bare-call shape triage named at check-settings-bind-window.mjs is classified precisely and it is NOT a fourth handshake: it is a DISPATCH spelling (bare `selfTest();` at :1060) orthogonal to the handshake, and that file's handshake is the FLAG read one line later at :1061. Three live files (check-error-code-casing, check-optional-error-sink-contract, check-org-identifier) were reading none until definitionSpan brace-counted the body instead of taking the first column-0 `}` -- each closes an inline arrow argument with `});` at column 0 inside selfTest. Scope held: no spelling unified, no gate script touched, --probe not run. origin/main was merged in (fa8575996) because dispatch-gates flagged the base STALE and named js-comment-mask.mjs, a file this one imports; the counts are identical before and after that merge.",
      "tests": "Static census before/after, base c99449ab5 in a separate worktree vs head, exit captured before any pipe, both EXIT=0. ABLATION, trap-guarded, restore proven by blob hash on both legs. NOTE: the FIRST attempt was a NO-OP -- `perl -0pi` failed to compile its replacement and exited without editing; the on-disk check caught it (`anchor after mutation (must be 0): 1`), the reading was discarded as void, and the leg was re-run with an exact editor rather than quietly retried. Leg 1, drop the flag branch of the recogniser (anchor 1 to 0, marker 1 on disk): CLI EXIT=1, `measure-self-test-floor: ITS OWN CONTROLS FAILED -- no census printed.` with four named failures including `HANDSHAKE CONTROL FAILED: a module-level flag set inside the self-test and read negated at the dispatch read none, not flag` and `NAME-INDEPENDENCE CONTROL FAILED: ... the recogniser is keyed on a NAME`; and the live check reached by direct import (main() refuses at the controls first) reported `live completeness failures: 1` naming all 85 files. Leg 2, drop the flag regex from LANDED_HANDSHAKE_NAMES so the fixture controls stay green and the CLI reaches the live check: EXIT=1, `measure-self-test-floor: THE HANDSHAKE CENSUS IS NOT COMPLETE -- no census printed.` / `85 file(s) carry a shape the recogniser reads but no LANDED SPELLING knows`. A new one reds here.` check-governed-merges --test EXIT=0: `NOT governed -- ordinary queue landing applies to a PR with exactly this file list.` NOT MEASURED by name, all six dependency absence in a worktree with no pnpm install, never a gate verdict: packages/lint/scripts/check-reference-carrier-shape.mjs and its --self-test (exit 3, `ts-parse: PREREQUISITE NOT MET -- the dependency typescript is not installed`), scripts/check-ci-filter-parity.mjs (exit 3, yaml), scripts/check-closing-keyword-parity.mjs (exit 3, yaml), pnpm check:driver-memory-census (exit 3, typescript), scripts/check-comment-mask-corpus.mjs (exit 1, ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND '@typescript-eslint/parser' -- module resolution before the gate body, read as NOT MEASURED not as red). CI runs all six with a real install. CONSUMER CHECK: #13799's per-file rule IS now machine-answerable from --json alone, filtering floor === 'NONE' by handshake !== 'none'; the split this instrument gives on 76e878c48 is 9 dispatchable / 5 blocked out of 14 floor-NONE files. That is NOT the card's 69/12 and is not meant to be -- the NONE-floor population was far larger when 69/12 was hand-computed and is now 14; what transfers is the method, not the split. All seven `none` rows were hand-read (two inline top-level blocks with no callee, two handing the return value straight to process.exit, one the ACCIDENT ternary, and platform-object-tenancy-census which dispatches on the flag only to refuse it). CHANGESET: none, `skip-changeset` label applied via additive REST POST and read back; AGENTS.md: that label \"is for a diff that publishes nothing from any released package\", and the diff is one repo-root tooling script (`git diff --name-only origin/main...HEAD` outside scripts/ is empty).",

Verified before filing anything new -- #15776 names this file at `:258` explicitly, so no duplicate card was opened. Not fixed here: converting it would change the masking behaviour underneath the very counts this PR publishes, and the in-place exemption fails its first condition (different defect class from this card)."

    LANDED — PR #15799 merged as f141e156b (09:34:38Z); this card is closed by it (Fixes #14968).

    Probe on re-fetched origin/main (f141e156b), readings copied from run output:

    • scripts/measure-self-test-floor.mjs carries export function definitionSpan(code, name) at :627 and export function classifyHandshake(src) at :739; the self-test's handshake controls at :1410–:1412 (HANDSHAKE CONTROL FAILED … sentinel / flag legs).
    • --help prints the Handshake SHAPE -- which verdict handshake each file carries, read from CODE (#14968) section (:8); Hole 2 -- no verdict handshake: NOT MEASURED (pass --probe; it runs every self-test twice) unchanged.
    • node scripts/measure-self-test-floor.mjs --self-test → EXIT=0 on this seat's dep-less checkout. The --json rows' handshake field was not re-read here (that needs the census sweep): NOT MEASURED on this seat; the PR's own run is on the ACCEPT.

    Stripping pm:dispatched and the assignee in the same action. #15759 (--probe row selector) is now dispatchable — its blocker was this landing.
