meta: the layered view answers the author of a draft-only item the same 404 as an absent name, so Studio can only learn "never published" from an error status #22397
Description
Filing gate ① — a product gap with a named location and a measured reach. reach: GET /api/v1/meta/:type/:name/layers answered 404 for a new (never-published) item while it was open in Studio. This was measured in a manual browser QA pass on objectstack 879bd38c, signed in as the seeded platform admin (objectstack-ai/objectui#11799, "What happens").
Who acts on it:
- Grading and routing: objectstack triage (seat post [PM seat] triage (objectstack-wide) — 🟢 Routine · session_01AavokzJ5DndAwitDXvKy4U · trig_01NcnCtMS2tH46nUg1a5TaMJ (hourly) · state = body + the round records newer than it #6015).
- Where the answer lives:
createMetaLayeredAnswerstep 1 inpackages/rest/src/meta-item-read-gate.ts(:2903onorigin/main11d119ab18). If the answer changes shape, it also lives inGetMetaItemLayeredResponseSchema(packages/spec/src/api/protocol.zod.ts:525). - The consumer waiting on it: studio: console noise from expected misses — ?state=draft probes 404, /layers 404, /ai/usage 501 polled without AI objectui#11799, held by the objectui
domain:uilane withBlocked-by:this card. ⛔ Not a claim.
What happens
-
getMetaItemLayered(packages/metadata-protocol/src/protocol.ts:10647) serves three stored layers:code;overlay, thesys_metadatarow read withstate: 'active'(:10897);effective.
A pending draft is in none of them.

Since PR fix(rest): the layered view answers an absent name with the plain read's 404, as it answers an unpublished app (#20507) #20527 ([finding] the layered view (
/meta/:type/:name/layers,?layers=true) answers an absent name 200 with every layer null, where an unpublished app answers 404: an existence oracle against ADR-0045 §3 #20507),createMetaLayeredAnsweranswers a read with no layer present asabsent, before the per-caller gate, for every caller. The reason is ADR-0045 §3: an absent name must look exactly like a hidden one. -
So the author of an item that exists only as a draft gets the same
404as a stranger asking about a name that exists nowhere. The browser logs it as a failed resource every time such an item is opened. -
fix(app-shell): four more editors stop asking /layers for an item that was never published (objectui#11799) objectui#11928 already dropped four of these reads, using answers Studio already held. Four reads remain where nothing the editor holds tells a never-published item from a published one (objectui seat 1's note, objectui comment
6055471680):- the metadata edit page's first load (its layered answer also feeds the lock banner, the overlay diff and the reset verdict);
- the embedded item editor's save read;
- the permission matrix's package-door save re-read;
- the list-view inspector's read of a view that exists nowhere yet.
The question, for triage to grade
- (a) By design. The
404is the answer for every caller, the author included. objectui#11799 then settles its four remaining reads client-side, or accepts the 404 as the "never published" signal, and this card closesnot_plannedwith that reason. - (b) The layered view answers its author.
- A caller who may write the item (the gate's
mayWriteItem) gets something other than404when the name exists only as a draft, for example200with every layernull. - Every other caller keeps the
absentanswer. - That moves one existence judgment behind the gate and changes what the layered response declares, so it is a contract question before it is a fix.
- A caller who may write the item (the gate's
⛔ Under either answer, a caller who may not write the item keeps getting the same 404 as for an absent name. The oracle #20507 closed stays closed.
