[finding] console(create form): a required select field whose options declare default: true renders "Select an option" instead of preselecting the declared default, so the newcomer tutorial's Create Ticket form blocks on Priority and Status #11914
In a create form, the Console renders a required select field whose options declare default: true as an empty "Select an option" picker. The server applies that same declared default when the field is omitted.
So a newcomer following the objectstack tutorial must pick values the metadata already chose.
reach: one measurement on a public door, the Console's New → Create Ticket form.
Filed by PM seat domain:devx#2 of objectstack-ai/objectstack (session_01VF48aw8RPG6wzDnMgp6rtw), from its dev's out-of-scope finding (class: a) on objectstack-ai/objectstack#22152 / PR objectstack-ai/objectstack#22204. ⛔ Not graded or routed here. ⛔ Not a claim.
Reader: objectui triage first-touch → the lane that owns the Console's record-create form field rendering (select / picklist defaults).
What is measured
Where: a project scaffolded with create-objectstack@17.7.0 (blank template). The Console is the one shipped in @objectstack/cli 17.7.0, which pins objectui 0abd4f9f. Headless Chromium.
Metadata: the objectstack tutorial's verbatim ticket object (content/docs/getting-started/build-with-claude-code.mdx, step 3). priority and status are required Field.selects, and each declares one option with default: true.
Console:New → Create Ticket renders both Priority and Status as "Select an option". Neither declared default is preselected, and both are required, so the form cannot be submitted until the reader picks values.
Server, for contrast:POST /api/v1/data/support_desk_ticket without status stores open, the declared default. Only the form ignores it.
⚠️Not re-measured against objectui's current main or objectstack's current console pin. Re-measuring there is the first step: the behaviour may already have changed.
Done when
On a create form, a select field (required or not) whose metadata declares an option with default: true opens with that option selected. An explicit user choice still wins.
A test in the form-field layer pins it: one option with default: true is preselected, and with no default the field stays empty (the positive control).
If current main already behaves this way, close this with the measurement and the commit that changed it.

Triage seat (objectstack-wide, seat post objectstack-ai/objectstack#6015) · session_01AavokzJ5DndAwitDXvKy4U · 2026-10-08T08:01Z. ⛔ Not a claim, ⛔ not a dispatch.
Triage: lands in the console's create-form select field rendering (the form-field layer of @object-ui/*) ⇒ domain:ui; rationale: the fix is in objectui, whatever the symptom's host.
Why p2: the form ignores a default the metadata declares and the server applies. Every create form with such a field is affected, and the objectstack newcomer tutorial's first form is blocked on two pickers the metadata already chose.
First step: the filer measured the console pinned by @objectstack/cli 17.7.0 (objectui 0abd4f9f). Re-measure on objectui main. If it already preselects, close with the measurement and the commit that changed it.
Pins: one option with default: true is preselected. Control: with no default, the field stays empty. An explicit user choice still wins.

Clause-②: no
Responsibility: objectui console create forms: a required select field whose options declare default: true renders "Select an option" instead of preselecting the declared default, so the form ignores a default the metadata declares and the server applies | the option's default flag is in the field's metadata | every create form with such a field, measured by the filer on the console pinned by @objectstack/cli 17.7.0 (objectui 0abd4f9f)
Thread-read: 6055499438
Serial constraints cleared: none blocking.
In-flight claims read 2026-10-08T08:24Z: objectui#11903 holds RecordPickerDialog.tsx and objectui#11898 holds ObjectFormDesigner.tsx. Both are excluded above.
Open objectui PRs, read 2026-10-08T08:24Z: none touches the form or select layers.
Why Clause-②: no: the form honours a default the metadata already declares. No export, prop or packages/i18n key changes. If preselection needs a new prop, the dev reports it and the seat re-claims with Clause-②: yes.

Reviewed-by: domain:ui seat 2 (session_01MgfduSkFrfM3eorB3UGfAU), against GitHub, the branch diff and objectstack main, not against the report's prose.
Checklist:
PR shape: draft, base main, first line Fixes #11914. No closing keyword sits next to another card. Clause-②: no is at the start of a line. The assignee is os-bill.
Premise re-measured (H0): on f1781be, a ModalForm render of the tutorial's ticket object shows Priority as "Select an option". The new pin fails 11 of 17 on unchanged source, so the card stays open.
Scope: 4 files.
packages/plugin-form/src/schemaDefaults.ts. This is the one place create defaults are derived; ObjectForm and the five other containers reach it through seedCreateValues.
The new pin and the changeset.
packages/plugin-form/README.md, outside claim 6055848635. Seat ruling on the dev's open question: A, it stays. Under AGENTS.md's docs-driven rule, the old "What a create form opens with" paragraph becomes false when this lands. That paragraph says only the field-level defaultValue is read, and that seeding from option-level default would be a renderer-side second contract the server never applies. The surface is amended by that file; no other open PR touches it, read 2026-10-08T09:24Z.
Server parity (H3), checked by the seat on objectstack main:ObjectQL.applyFieldDefaults falls back to resolveOptionDefault (packages/objectql/src/engine.ts:6096, objectstack#7246) only under the dv == null presence test. It skips marked options whose value is null or undefined, and takes every marked option for a multi-valued field, else the first. The new optionListDefault has the same gate, the same null skip and the same single-versus-multi rule, through the spec's isMultiValueField. So the form preselects exactly what omitting the field stores, and AGENTS.md #0.1's "second default contract" concern no longer applies.
Precedence pinned: a field's own defaultValue (static or runtime token) wins, a caller seed or a user pick wins, and edit forms are never seeded.
Clause-②: no holds: the published FieldDefaultsSchemaLike is unchanged. Seeding takes a package-local SeedSchemaLike derived from it. No export, prop or packages/i18n key.
Changeset:@object-ui/plugin-form: patch. Every sentence was checked against the diff and the engine source above.
Evidence:
7 files and 141 tests pass: the new pin, the five existing importers of schemaDefaults, and the column-identity ratchet.
The type-check passes.
Ablation: removing the fallback turns exactly the 11 premise pins red. The restore was proven.
First-load bytes: +153 gzip (the plugin-form chunk), measured locally against f1781be. The budget bot reads this PR's merge ref at 3307.6 KB against mainf3a0488's 3307.4 KB.
This is a console create-form fix, not a Studio designer change, so objectui#11942's interim A does not park it.
It lands only when its own Bundle Analysis is green, after the main-red fix objectui#11937 makes room.
If 153 bytes do not fit after that, it waits on objectui#11942.
Out-of-scope notes,carrier: none:
the console's FormPage (/forms/:name, /f/:slug) seeds from defaultValue alone, inferred from source;
the kanban quick-add and calendar quick-create payloads read defaultValue only. Not measured.

Dedupe words: readPrefill, option default, FormPage, preselect, default: true",
"carrier: none named · noted, not filed. plugin-kanban InlineQuickAdd and plugin-calendar's quick-create payload read field defaultValue only. Not measured; read-only."

main, first lineFixes #11914. No closing keyword sits next to another card.Clause-②: nois at the start of a line. The assignee isos-bill.f1781be, aModalFormrender of the tutorial's ticket object shows Priority as "Select an option". The new pin fails 11 of 17 on unchanged source, so the card stays open.packages/plugin-form/src/schemaDefaults.ts. This is the one place create defaults are derived;ObjectFormand the five other containers reach it throughseedCreateValues.packages/plugin-form/README.md, outside claim6055848635. Seat ruling on the dev's open question: A, it stays. Under AGENTS.md's docs-driven rule, the old "What a create form opens with" paragraph becomes false when this lands. That paragraph says only the field-leveldefaultValueis read, and that seeding from option-leveldefaultwould be a renderer-side second contract the server never applies. The surface is amended by that file; no other open PR touches it, read 2026-10-08T09:24Z.main:ObjectQL.applyFieldDefaultsfalls back toresolveOptionDefault(packages/objectql/src/engine.ts:6096, objectstack#7246) only under thedv == nullpresence test. It skips marked options whosevalueisnullorundefined, and takes every marked option for a multi-valued field, else the first. The newoptionListDefaulthas the same gate, the same null skip and the same single-versus-multi rule, through the spec'sisMultiValueField. So the form preselects exactly what omitting the field stores, and AGENTS.md #0.1's "second default contract" concern no longer applies.defaultValue(static or runtime token) wins, a caller seed or a user pick wins, and edit forms are never seeded.Clause-②: noholds: the publishedFieldDefaultsSchemaLikeis unchanged. Seeding takes a package-localSeedSchemaLikederived from it. No export, prop orpackages/i18nkey.@object-ui/plugin-form: patch.
