Getting Started

This project uses Poetry to manage a suitable Python environment. To prepare the environment and install the required dependencies, you should run:

poetry install

Then, for all of the Python commands below, you should run them in a Poetry shell. You can start the shell as in:

poetry shell

All of the Python scripts described herein use the argparse library for argument parsing. To see the available options run with the -h or --help argument.

How to Prepare Results

Each time I prepare an event, I add the specific commands I used to the bottom of this README. I recommend following this practice to minimize errors and provide some rudimentary guidance for others to reproduce the results if needed.

  1. Get the results CSV from the timing crew. Usually they email it. Copy it into the current year's directory with a name like: cp <original_name.csv> 2022/mowog7.csv

  2. Compute the results for the event. If the event had something other than 3 morning runs, you can use the -m argument to specify how many runs happened in the morning. Note that you will need to change the filenames for each event.

  3. Prepare the final event HTML file. Be sure to update the name, date, location, and filenames for each event.

  4. Review the HTML file for correctness. Spot check times and positions against expected results. If there are any errors, fix them and return to step 2.

  5. Prepare season results. This includes publishing the DOTY standings, the MOWOG series standings, and (for some events) the MCAS series standings.

    • For DOTY, you need to specify each results file (JSON produced in step 2 above).

    • For the MOWOG and MCAS series standings, you should modify the appropriate -conf.json file to include the latest results and then run. You should review any duplicate names or other warnings reported here.

  6. Review the updated standings files for correctness. If you find errors, fix them and return to step 2.

  7. Once all the results are prepared, use FTP to upload them to the web site. See the publishing section at the bottom of this README for the specific commands.

  8. Go to SquareSpace and update the results page to include the newly uploaded results. Be sure to double-check that the links are correct.

Results Contents

We want to write the results as an html so that people can copy from the table and past into Excel (or something). Also, this let's us make the page have links to the specific classes.

What About Met Council Results?

  • These come from either a CSV or XLSX file.

Implementation

Would be neat to write the scripts in Node/JavaScript so that they could be ported to a web server or run on the timing machines. But, for now anyway, Python is just much easier and more efficient for development.

I wrote two scripts for this.

  1. compute_results.py -- reads the event CSV and writes a JSON file with the complete results.
  2. publish_event.py -- reads the event JSON and writes an HTML file with the full results.

We use templates for the output. Mustache (https://mustache.github.io/) seems like a good syntax (certainly the handlebarsjs version of JavaScript has been useful). The Python library for mustache is pystache (https://github.com/defunkt/pystache).

Jay McKoskey was driving Felipe's STS car in the morning. But the engine failed before afternoon runs. Jay finished the event in my ES car. Since he is in Pro, we are giving him the ES PAX for the afternoon. My scripts don't handle this, so I manually edited his times to yield the correct PAX times in the results.

ES PAX is 0.793 and STS PAX is 0.812. I made a trivial Excel sheet in the 2020 directory that walks through the calculations.

I used to ftp as shown below. But in mid-June 2020 I started getting a fingerprint error. After logging into the HostGator customer portal I was able to determine that ftp.mnautox.com works.
